Penn Can Speedway 'King of the Can' Date Changed: Marquee Event Moved To Friday, Oct. 14 To Benefit Fans & Racers!

SUSQUEHANNA, PA - In the interest of competitors and fans, the 'King of the Can' promotional team of speedway operators Reed Miller and Al Wilcox and special events promoter Brett Deyo have announced a date change for the year-end 'King of the Can' spectacular.

The Gary's U-Pull-It/Don's Automotive Mall 'King of the Can' 50-lap, $5,000-to-win big-block/small-block Modified event has been moved from Sunday, Oct. 16 to the preceding Friday night, Oct. 14 to avoid scheduling conflicts. Now, the 'King of the Can' will not compete head-to-head with the Super DIRTcar Series event scheduled for Oct. 16 at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Grandview (Pa.) Speedway management had also announced a rain date of Sunday for its scheduled Five-25s program on Saturday.

"This is a change that we believe will increase the quality of the field for Penn Can's marquee event and provide fans with a better show," said Deyo. "We had some new faces at the Can for our June 'Clash at the Can' event (which attracted an all-star field of 66 Modifieds) and many of them would like to return for another special event this season.

"For all parties involved, this change is a positive. Additionally, racing on a Friday night versus a Sunday afternoon will benefit track conditions."

The 'King of the Can' has been the signature Penn Can event since 1999 when Brian Weaver of Windsor, N.Y., took the inaugural victory. This year, the Modified portion is a Deyo-Wilcox-Miller promotion for the first time and serves as the final leg of the VP Racing Fuels Short Track Four Crown presented by Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.

New for 2011, a number of contingency awards will be distributed from companies including American Racer/Lias Tire, BFP Specialty, Shiley Fabrication and more. Lap money will also be collected at $20 per lap. A Hard Charger Award, Hard Luck Award and other bonuses will be announced as the event approaches.

Kevin Bates of Lake Ariel, Pa., won last year's 50-lap 'King of the Can' event.

Joining the Modifieds on the Friday portion of the 'King of the Can' will be Crate (602) Sportsman ($1,000 to win) and Street Stocks in a $500-to-win event. The top-three Crate Sportsman earn the 13th, 14th and 15th starting positions, respectively, in the Saturday (Oct. 15) Race of Champions Sportsman event. The Street Stock winner starts seventh in the Trackside Products Street Stock Series event to be run on Saturday.

Sunday (Oct. 16) will now serve as the Friday rain date.

Saturday's program on Oct. 15 is comprised of RoC Sportsman, Late Models, Trackside Products Street Stocks, CRSA Sprint Cars, Four Cylinders and Factory Stocks/Trucks.

The 'Hot Summer Night' program rained out on Aug. 9 will not be made up. However, Open Sportsman will be added to a 'Super Sunday' program at Penn Can Sept. 18. Visit www.penncan.com for further information on that new event.
