Book Review time. “SMOKESCREEN”
Normally the only books I read are on my iPad, but I wanted
to branch out and read a book involving my favorite sport, Dirt Racing. Walking
around the PPB Motorsports Show last weekend gave me many opportunities to pick
up any book that I might have wanted about Dirt Track Racing but one caught my
attention. “SMOKESCREEN” was written by Danny Varin, he was right behind Tony
Stewart on August 9th, 2014 at Canandaigua Speedway, he saw
everything. Being that I never really drove a racecar in competition but I have
been around racing most of my life and have been involved one way or another. I
understand what it’s like to race, I may not have the mindset of a driver but I
do understand what goes on. I wanted to see how close I was to someone else’s thoughts
of what happened that night, what better way to see but from the driver who saw
it all.
I have never been involved in a tragedy like what happen
that night so I cannot imagine how anyone would feel when they see something
like that. Danny Varin does a great job explaining many aspects of dirt track
racing and what it’s like to be a driver. He also gives you his thoughts of
what he thinks may have been in the minds of Tony and Kevin Ward Jr. Danny is qualified
to give his opinion of what happened because he is the only one that was behind
the accident and he knows what the ESS sprint cars feel like.
I really liked reading this book as what Danny described is
very close to my thoughts about what happened. No one will ever completely
understand what happened but Danny gives a firsthand look into what he saw and
felt. There are many parts of the book I would love to share but I do not want
to ruin it for anyone that wants to read it.
Nice job Danny!
