Modifieds Return To Susquehanna Speedway In 2016; Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP South Region To Visit Renovated Facility Under Leadership Of New Owner Scott Gobrecht & General Manager Kolten Gouse
NEWBERRYTOWN, PA – The roar of Modifieds will return to Susquehanna Speedway in 2016.
During the Dec. 19 Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By VP Awards Banquet in Breinigsville, Pa., series organizer Brett Deyo announced Sunday, July 31 as the date for a South Region event at the Newberrytown, Pa., facility. The 50-lap event offers a massive purse for big-block/small-block Modified racers, with $5,000 minimum going to the winner, $1,000 for 10th and $400 to take the green.
The STSS visit is scheduled during the track’s prestigious York County Nationals weekend with a tentative rain date of the following Sunday (Aug. 7).
Susquehanna Speedway has been purchased by businessman Scott Gobrecht, with Kolten Gouse named general manager. As the new leadership team prepares for its first season, improvements to the facility have been plentiful, including but not limited to new grandstand seats, renovated bathrooms, a complete resurfacing of the four-tenths-mile oval, replacing the backstretch guardrail, additional pit parking, and much more.
“I have been following along with the progress at Susquehanna since Scott and Kolten got their renovations started and I am impressed like everyone else,” STSS organizer Deyo said. “Scott, Kolten and I were all able to meet during the PRI (Performance Racing Industry) show in Indianapolis and solidify the date.
“There is storied Modified tradition at Susquehanna, and the track size and location are ideal for our series. The feedback thus far from racers has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s one to mark your calendars for.”
The last time a big-block Modified hit the track at Susquehanna was June 15, 2006, a Super DIRTcar Series event won by Jimmy Horton. The track hosted seven Super DIRTcar Series events from June 21, 1994 through 2006.
The most recent small-block Modified race took place on June 14, 2009. Meme DeSantis topped a field of 31 cars to take the checkered.
Modifieds were featured as a regular weekly attraction at Susquehanna from 1993 through the 2003 season.
The STSS South Region schedule is now set for ’16 with seven dates at six venues. The series opens at Georgetown (Del.) Speedway on March 12 and concludes at the historic track on Aug. 30. Also hosting STSS South Region events are Bridgeport (N.J.), Big Diamond in Minersville, Pa., New Egypt (N.J.) and Delaware International in Delmar, Del.
Ryan Watt of Boyertown, Pa., is the reigning STSS South Region champion. He pocketed $7,500 for his ’15 title, earning four top-10 finishes in the five events contested. Watt bested New York’s Anthony Perrego for the crown.
