“A December to Remember” For New York State Modified Racing This Saturday: Accord Speedway Postponed ‘Gobbler’ Offers Rare Opportunity For December Outdoor Racing In New York State, Breaks Hiatus Of Nearly 20 Years
ACCORD, NY – Accord Speedway is offering dirt-track race fans a “December to remember” this weekend when the rescheduled ‘Gobbler’ event goes green this Saturday, December 5.
Yes, December 5!
For the first time in 27 years, an outdoor, December oval-track stock car event will be held in the Northeast, and quite possibly for the first time in New York State. A full lineup of racing is set for the Ulster County facility in a co-promotion involving speedway owners Gary and Donna Palmer and Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media LLC.
Headlining the ‘Gobbler’ spectacular is a 50-lap main for big-block/small-block Modifieds offering a healthy $5,500 winner’s share and $300 just to take the green flag. Sportsman (Open vs. Crate 602) race for 25 laps and $1,500 to win plus Crate 602 bonuses of $150, $125 and $125. Completing the program will be Street Stocks, in the Ron Wright Memorial with a $1,000 winner’s share for 20 laps, and Slingshots racing for $400 to win in a 20-lap feature.
A number of cash and product bonuses are in place for all divisions, sweetening the pot for racers.
“This is definitely shaping up to be an historic day for racing in New York State,” Deyo said. “It is unfortunate the weather went sour last weekend, but it sure didn’t stifle the buzz about this event. I think it is something the racing community will remember for a long time.”
Racing historians have been poring through the archives pulling records on Northeast December racing. Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway hosted two events: December 6, 1987 and December 4, 1988. Wall Stadium at the Jersey shore raced on December 7, 1985. Of course, the most-talked-about December race took place on December 5, 1982 with the Lehigh Valley 100 at the now-defunct Nazareth (Pa.) National Speedway.
A number of special fan activities are planned for this unique event. The first 50 fans through the gate will receive a thermal mug courtesy of Bob Hilbert Sportswear.
A toy drive to benefit the local youth commission and Accord-Kerhonkson children will be held at the track. All those donating a new, unwrapped toy will receive a coupon for a free hot chocolate.
There could be appearances throughout the day by Santa and “Santa’s helpers” and holiday music in the air.
“This will be a one-of-a-kind day in racing for sure,” Deyo said. “It’s one last shot to get the racing fix before a long winter.”
General rules and information for all divisions can be found on the BD Motorsports Media website at the following link: http://bdmotorsportsmedia.com/gobbler-general-information-rules-pricing-times/
Pit gates will open at 10 a.m., with grandstand gates unlocked at 11 a.m. A drivers’ meeting is planned for 12:30 p.m., with hot laps at 1 p.m. and racing at 2 p.m.
Adult admission is $22. Seniors (ages 65 and over) pay $20 and Kids 11 and under pay $5. Limited indoor seating is available for $35 by calling 845.626.1142 in advance of the event. Pit admission is $35, with no license required.
Registration is now open for the Modified, Sportsman and Slingshot divisions. Entry forms have been posted on the BD Motorsports Media website. There is no pre-entry fee for the Street Stock division.
The inaugural ‘Gobbler’ was contested on Nov. 30, 2013 with Anthony Perrego of Montgomery, N.Y., securing the Modified triumph over Stewart Friesen. Other winners included Rocky Warner (Sportsman) and Charlie Houghtaling (Street Stock).
The ’14 version was postponed by weather to April 14, 2015. Jackie Brown Jr., a local Hurley, N.Y., competitor, was the Modified winner. Other victors included Greg McCloskey (Sportsman), Kevin Skelly (Street Stock) and Demetrios Drellos (Slingshot).
Accord previously ran Thanksgiving weekend race very early in the Palmer promotional regime, back in 2002 with Robbie Green of Wallkill, N.Y., the Modified winner.
