There were five Friday night events that led up to the Romp in the Swamp, giving race teams the opportunity to perfect their strategy and their set-ups before the day of the big event. Iles picked up the win in one of those events. "We worked all year to win this race," Iles said following his big win. "You prepare to win them all but we really had our eye on this race. I love this little track!"
A different qualifying format was used for this event which increased the level of competition prior to the forty lap main event. Cars were given two laps of time trials to determine the first five starting spots for the Romp in the Swamp. Ryan Godown had never raced on the Bridgeport quarter mile before taking some hot laps on the track the night before but that didn't stop him from setting fast time with Bill Hewlett's No. 901. Lou Cicconi, Billy Pauch Jr., Iles and Rocco Infante claimed the top five fastest times. The top five were then inverted for the starting line-up with Infante on the pole.
Eleventh through twentieth spot in time trials lined up for the C Main the top five finishers advancing to the B Main. Ryan Watt was the winner of the ten lap C Main with Ron Roberts, Richie Pratt, Jr., Scott Ambruster and Tom Carberry advancing to the next level.
Jimmy Horton, who had two quarter mile wins to his credit this year, picked up the win in the B Main over Bob Drayton, Dominick Buffalino, Watt, Carberry and Corey Anderson who transferred into the main event.
Three drivers received provisional starts. Richie Pratt, Jr. won the Fan Vote to gain a starting spot in the feature. Jeff Heotzler was the recipient of the Track Champion provisional while Ron Roberts took the provisional for perfect attendance in all of the quarter mile events.
Infante and Iles lined up side by side to lead the field to the green flag in the Romp of the Swamp. Infante quickly took the lead while Pauch Jr. battled Iles to take over second. The caution flag waved on lap three when Cicconi and Buffalino tangled, collecting the cars of Horton, Watt and Carberry in the process. All cars restarted with the exception of Cicconi who headed for the pits.
Iles took over second on the restart while Infante held on to the lead. Iles took a few looks to the inside but Infante held the lead until the caution flag waved on lap ten for Corey Anderson.
Infante went back to work when green flag racing resumed with Iles offering more and more pressure as the laps counted down. As the half way mark approached, Iles was hot on Infante's heals while Godown pressured Pauch Jr. for the third spot. With twenty laps scored, Infante led Iles, Godown, Pauch and Buffalino.
On lap twenty-four, Iles made a change to his strategy as he challenged Infante from the outside. His efforts paid off as Iles took over the lead as he raced Infante down the backstretch. Infante had another shot at the lead following a caution for Pratt but Iles again used the outside to his advantage to hold onto the lead.
Iles pulled away from the competition. Godown raced to the inside of Infante on lap thirty-one to take over second but was never able to close in on the leader.
Iles drove to the win in the inaugural event and celebrated with his crew. "I really want to thank Rob Anderson and Mike Wisniewski for putting on this show," Iles stated. "I hope that they continue to do so in the future!"
Trailing Iles at the finish line were Godown, Infante, Pauch, Jr. and Buffanlino. Horton, Watt, Drayton, Pratt and Roberts rounded out the top ten.
Aaron Bowes was the winner in the twenty-five lap feature event for the Xcel 600 Modifieds over Brian Carber, Logan Diehl, Mike Burrows and Josh Pepe.
