BERNHEISEL HOSTS POSITIVE MEETING FOR GRANDVIEW LATE MODEL TEAMS
Jonestown, PA – Bernheisel Race Cars hosted a meeting on April 23rd at their Jonestown, PA facility to give the Grandview Speedway late model teams an opportunity to discuss what they can do to work together to improve the long term viability and security of the division at the Bechtelsville oval.
The discussion, moderated by Jim Bernheisel, focused on the struggles of auto racing today, both on a national and local level, and what Grandview racers can do to their world’s sphere of influence. Over 20 late model racing participants at Grandview were in attendance and shared their thoughts and ideas on what they can do to improve their racing product.
Much of the conversation focused on respect…. respect of drivers for their fellow racers on track was at the top of the list. Racing with more of a ‘give and take’ attitude where competitiveness of a specific event allows. Ultimately being easier on equipment while also providing a better show for the fans. Further, a desire to allow for more camaraderie between drivers and teams to help one another and build a sense of belonging. The understanding that helping less experienced drivers and teams learn from their mistakes, rather than just criticizing, will help everyone in the long run.
“This was really a great good of guys and gals,” shared Bernheisel. “They all are sincerely interested in trying to do a better job and they were very appreciative of the opportunity we provided for them to sit down and speak openly about their racing. They were also very appreciative of our involvement in all of this and the fact that BRC’s support for the division is not just to build our business as much as it is our very honest interest in helping the sport due to our love of the sport. “
Another discussion by the competitors revolved around how their actions portray their sport. The need to be cautious of what they might say in the heat of the moment or on social media, web sites and message boards as well as being more positive about their fellow racers and the race tracks they compete on was discussed. Too often things exchanged in the heat of the moment, at the track or online, do nothing positive regarding change and actually negatively impact the communication process and provide a negative impression to others.
Examples shared of positive things already being done included teams taking time from their preparation of their cars during the week to help a new guy set-up his car, a team giving tires to an outsider from another track to come race at Grandview, drivers giving time to participate in radio shows and things like pre-race fan appreciation activities and a team being involved providing bicycles to be given to lucky young fans at the track.
“The group is really committed to making things better,” commented Bernheisel. “They want to make late model racing at Grandview succeed and see it grow! Many are already stepping up and doing positive things and others are committed to do what they can to help. This is indicative of why we want to be involved with local tracks and local racers.”
