LAUBACH, HILL & DOERR CAPTURE POKER SERIES BONUS WINS IN BRIDGEPORT ACTION
Rick Laubach picked up his third win of the season at the Bridgeport Speedway on Saturday night but his time, Laubach’s win came behind the wheel of a small block modified instead of the potent Big Block equipment that he regularly races in the Spirit Dodge Big Block Modifieds. Jesse Hill was again the dominant car in the 811 Dig Safely Crate/Sportsman feature while Jeremy Doerr used a move late in the race to pick up his fourth win of the season in the Stewart Stainless Outlaw Stock feature event.
Saturday night’s races offered competitors an opportunity to improve their hands in the 2014 Poker Series that will conclude in mid-November.
With preparations in full swing for the upcoming Super Dirt events in Syracuse, NY this coming week, Laubach elected to drive the Small Block Modified owned by Gary & Donna Spotts and Earl Fellin. This team has several wins to their credit this season and picked up their first win as a team at Bridgeport on Saturday night after Laubach took the lead from 2014 Track Champion, Jimmy Horton on lap two.
After a multi-car incident on the initial start, the Modifieds were able to run thirty non-stop laps as Laubach led the field to the checkered. Horton drew the pole for the start of the thirty lap feature event and moved out in front at the start. Laubach challenged Tommy Beamer for second on lap one and then closed in on Horton. It took an inside move in turn two for Laubach to take over the race lead on the next circuit. Sammy Martz passed Beamer for third on lap four. After starting 13th, Richie Pratt Jr. broke into the top five with just five laps complete.
The leaders caught the back of the field on lap ten. With Laubach well out in front, Horton held an equal margin over third. Pratt advanced to third on lap nineteen. Laubach led the way to the checkered to collect his first Ace in his Poker Series Hand. Horton finished second followed by Pratt, Martz and Beamer.
In the 811 Dig Safely twenty lap feature event, Kevin Belmont led lap one before CJ Jones took over on the next time around. Jones was forced to pit for a tire change after lap three was completed, with Belmont regaining the lead through lap seven when Jesse Hill made the pass. Steve Davis moved in on Belmont on lap nine to take over second. Travis Hill passed Belmont for third on lap twelve. With just one more weekend of racing remaining in the 2014 season at Bridgeport, Jesse Hill stands within one win of tying his brother, Travis, the 2014 Crate/Sportsman champion, in the win column. Davis finished second, followed by Travis Hill, Belmont and Dave Damiano.
Jesse Hill now holds a pair of Aces to the pair of Kings held by Jesse James Bonaduce.
After TJ Henry dominated most of the Stewart Stainless Outlaw Stock event, Jeramy Doerr took the lead for the final two circuits to capture his fourth win of the season. Henry finished second followed by Jim Avery, Brian Ludwig and Tom Princiotta. Ron Frees still leads the way in the Poker Series with his three Aces while Henry now sits with a pair of Kings.
A special race was held for the mechanics in each division at the end of the night of racing. Chuck Sayer took the win in the Modified/Crate Sportsman event behind the wheel of Matt Peck’s #39 while Jon Meyer won the Outlaw Stock race in the #43 of Ron Frees.
Alex’s Lemonade stand raised money throughout the events to fight childhood cancer with Mario Carpino as the track’s guest of honor. At just nine years of age, Mario continues his own personal battle while helping to raise money to save kids like the friends that he has made along the way.
