PAUCH JR., HENDRICKS, AND BECKER PICK-UP VICTORIES ON KEN'S TIRE NIGHT AT BIG DIAMOND SPEEDWAY
MINERSVILLE, PA - June 29th, 2014
The misfortune of Meme Desantis became the good luck of Billy Pauch Jr.. Desantis tangled with a lapped car while leading with two laps to go, handing the lead over to Pauch, who then raced to his third win of the season in the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic 358 Modifieds at Big Diamond Speedway.
Colt Harris raced into the lead at the drop of the green flag and quickly pulled away from the rest of the field in search of his second career victory. Harris led the first nine laps until the caution flew on lap ten for a multi-car tangle. During the caution flag second place running Ray Swinehart retired to the pit area with mechanical issues. Joe Mooney was also black flagged at this time for safety reasons as he no longer had a rear bumper, exposing his fuel cell. On the restart Harris still led, but now he was closely pursued by Meme Desantis, looking for his first Big Diamond victory of the season. One lap later Desantis made his move, powering around the outside of Harris to take over the top spot. While this was going on up front, Pauch Jr., Rick Laubach, and last weeks winner Kevin Smith were moving to the front from their 11th, 8th, and 12th starting positions respectively. Desantis, Harris, and Pauch Jr. ran one, two and three from laps #12 thru #22, with Desantis holding a comfortable lead, while Harris and Pauch Jr. ran door to door. On lap #23 Harris jumped the cushion slightly, allowing Pauch Jr. just enough room to squeeze by for second, which in the end became the pass for the lead. Coming down to complete lap #24, Jamie Speers spun in front of Desantis, leaving the leader with nowhere to go. Contact was made, and even though Desantis was able to keep moving and retain the lead, the contact led to a flat left rear tire on the Desantis machine, ending his evening two laps early and preventing a trip to victory lane. Pauch Jr. assumed the lead at this point, and was able to lead the final two laps for his third Big Diamond victory of the season on Ken's Tire night at the speedway. Ken's Tire is one of the sponsors of the Pauch Jr. machine, which made the victory just a little bit sweeter. Harris held on for second for his best finish of the season, followed by Laubach, last weeks winner Smith, and Jared Umbenhauer. Rounding out the top ten were Stewart Friesen, Kevin Albert Jr., Frank Cozze, Duane Howard, and Dale Hartz with his first top ten of the season.
Heat races for the 30 Modifieds signed in were won by Pauch Jr., Laubach, and Swinehart, with Brett Kressley winning the consolation.
In the rough and tumble, caution filled USS Achey Sportsman event, Tim Fitzpatrick led the first 11 laps until a huge pile-up at the front of the field took out most of the front runners. On the ensuing restart, Doug Hendricks bolted into the lead and never looked back, claiming his first win of the season. Just like Pauch Jr., Ken's Tire also graces the sail panels of Hendricks machine, giving the evenings sponsor two cars in victory lane. Clay Butler came home in second, followed by Shawn Light, Tim Fitzpatrick, and Wayne Witmer.
Heat races were won by Fitzpatrick and Kevin Beach Jr.
In the non-stop 20 lap Savage 61 Roadrunner event, Jeremy Becker led wire-to-wire for his third win of the season. Jim Kost came home second, followed by Chris Holland, Shon Elk, and Devin Trexler.
Heat races were won by Tom Hablett and Holland.
The night ended with Powder Puff races for the ladies, sponsored by Kim's Kreations. In the Roadrunner division, Alex Trexler came home the winner in her husband Devin's #181 machine. In the Modified/Sportsman combination race, Kim Glass took her husband Mike's #2 to victory lane. Both events were 15 laps in distance. Much of the crowd stayed to watch these fun events.
Big wheel races for the kids were held at intermission, also sponsored by Kim's Kreations. A good time was had by all involved.
Racing returns this coming Friday, July 4th with one of the biggest events of the year, the 34th running of the Georgie Steveson Memorial. This years version will see the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic DIRTcar Modifieds go 34 lap for $3,400 to win and $340 just to take the green flag. There will also be a cash dash for the Modifieds, sponsored by Marks Service Center in Pottsville, PA, that pays $300 to the winner. The cash dash is run in memory of Fran Pursell Sr. and Eddie Dee, two long time competitors at the track. Along with the Modifieds will be the USS Achey Sportsman and Roadrunners, each competing in a full slate of qualifying and 20 lap feature events. This event carries a rain date of July 11th, 2014.
Last years winner Meme Desantis will be looking to make it two in a row in this prestigious event, but as is the case each and every week at Big Diamond, the competition will make it very tough to repeat. Billy Pauch Jr., the 2011 winner of this race and winner three times this year at Big Diamond, will surely be one of the favorites, along with Jeff Strunk, Frank Cozze, Duane Howard and a host of others. Expect some invaders to show up and try to take home the cash, as American Racer tires will be legal for this event along with the Hoosier track tires.
This event is run annually in memory of Georgie Stevenson. Diagnosed with spinal cancer at age six, Stevenson was a young race fan who made quite an impact on many, many people before passing away much too soon following a six-year battle with the dreaded disease. Despite his own health issues, Stevenson helped raise money for ill children and adults and accomplished more in his 12 short years than most of us will in a lifetime. For information on Georgie Stevenson and the Georgie Stevenson Memorial Fund, visit www.georgiestevensonmemorial.webs.com.
Also included on this special day will be the first ever "Fan Fest" at Big Diamond Speedway. Held in the grandstand area of the track from 5:00 Pm until 7:30 PM, "Fan Fest" will include complimentary hamburgers, hot dogs, and water to the fans while supplies last. There will be face painting and cotton candy for the kids, popular Roadrunner driver "TJ the DJ" will be providing music for your listening pleasure, and lots of prizes will be given away to the fans. Many drivers will have their cars on display and will be available for an autograph session.
Adult general admission for this event will be $22.00 for adults. Students ages 13 to 17, seniors, and active military will be $20.00 (all with valid ID). Kids 12 and under, as always, are free.
Come on out and spend your July 4th with "Fan Fest", free food, fun, and great racing at Big Diamond Speedway.
