KRESSLEY WINS FAYASH MEMORIAL FOR SPORTSMAN, SMITH WINS FIRST IN MODIFIEDS, HAUS/HOLLAND ALSO PICK UP VICTORIES
MINERSVILLE, PA - June 22nd, 2014
Brett Kressley picked up the biggest win of his very young career Friday evening, winning the 30 lap $3,000 to win Andy Fayash Memorial race for the USS Achey Sportsman at Big Diamond Speedway. Outside pole sitter Joe Funk jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag, leading the first 12 laps of the event, which were run caution free. A lap #13 caution flag for a spinning Jared Umbenhauer grouped the field for the impending restart. On the restart, now second place running Craig Whitmoyer and third place Brett Kressley applied heavy pressure to leader Funk. For the next eight laps these three drivers put on an epic battle for the lead, never more than a car length between the three of them combined. Whitmoyer was able to take the top spot on lap #18, with Kressley taking over second on lap #19. For the next three laps these two drivers were pretty much side by side, Whitmoyer running low, Kressley high, waiting to make his move. That move came on lap #23 when Kressley was finally able to take over the top spot and pull away slightly over Whitmoyer and Funk. Lapped traffic made things interesting the last four laps of the event, but Kressley was able to hang on to grab the huge victory, followed by Whitmoyer and Funk. Doug Hendricks was able to come home fourth, with Mike Lisowski coming home with a solid 5th place finish. Sixth thru tenth were pole sitter AJ Gerhart, last years winner Tim Fitzpatrick, Brad Brightbill in his first start of the season, Clay Butler, and Doug Snyder.
Heat races for the 28 Sportsman cars on hand were won by Mike Lisowski, Craig Whitmoyer, and Doug Hendricks. The consolation event was won by Charles Webber.
In victory lane Kressley was presented with a beautiful custom made clock courtesy of Kim's Kreations. Another special award went to Corey Renninger, who finished in the 17th position and won $30 courtesy of the children of Andy Fayash in memory of their father.
In the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic 358 DIRTcar Modifieds, sophomore driver Kevin Smith picked up his first ever victory in the division, to the delight of the crowd on hand. Second place starting Frank Cozze jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag in this event, which was marred by caution flags at the start. Andy Burkhart, Kevin Albert Jr., and John Willman raced second third, and fourth behind Cozze until the red flag was throw for a huge pile up on the back stretch. Meme Desantis, Jeff Strunk, Ray Swinehart, Dan Hineline, and Mike Mamanna were among those involved that were unfortunately done for the evening. On the restart Cozze continued to lead, but out of nowhere now appeared Kevin Smith into the second position, making a huge move on the outside in turns one and two. Smith applied heavy pressure to Cozze over the next four laps until the caution flew for a spinning Jamie Speers. The restart was exactly what Smith needed, jumping into the lead when the green was thrown and putting some distance between himself and Cozze. It wasn't over yet though, as Billy Pauch Jr. was slicing his way through the field from his thirteenth place starting spot, taking over second on lap #17 and raising his periscope to track down Smith. The last few laps Pauch was right on Smith tail end, looking for an opening while racing cleanly, but Smith never faltered, running a perfect race to take home his first career 358 Modified victory. Pauch Jr. finished in the runner up spot, and with that finish took over the points lead in the season long chase. Cozze held on for third, followed by teammate Stewart Friesen, but in Norm Hansell prepared mounts. Duane Howard continued his consistent season coming home fifth, followed by Willman, Burkhart, hard-charger Joe Mooney from 20th, Shawn Fitzpatrick, and Kevin Albert Jr.
Heat races were won by Stewart Friesen, Kevin Albert Jr., and Ray Swinehart.
In the Jeremy Slifko Fabrication Services Late Model 20 lap event, after the only caution of the event forced a complete restart, Scott Haus bolted into the lead at the drop of the green and led all 20 laps to score his second win of the season. It wasn't easy though, as Ben Whitaker was all over Haus until the veteran racer was able to use lapped traffic to his advantage to pull away slightly for the win. The winning driver was all smiles in victory lane, complimenting Whitaker for racing him cleanly, and expressing his excitement for this coming Tuesday's World of Outlaw Late Model event in which he will compete. Whitaker held on for second, followed by Randall Paxton, Andrew Haus, and Steve Nederostak.
The single heat race for the Late Models was also won by Haus.
The Savage 61 Roadrunners were the final feature of the night, and as always they did not disappoint. Pole sitter Chris Holland jumped into the lead from the start, with fifth and sixth place starting Jeremy Becker and Andrew Fayash III in tow. These three drivers, along with third starting TJ Fitzpatrick, stayed incredibly close to one another over the over the first thirteen laps, with so much of a hiccup by any of them meaning the loss of several spots. Unfortunately Fayash's great run came to an end compliments of a shredded tire on lap #14. Holland continued to lead at this point, with Becker and Fitapatrick bumper to bumper behind him. Comnig down to the checker Becker made one last effort, with the announcer proclaiming "stand by scorers", but it wasn't enough and Holland took home his first win of the season. Becker held on for a very close second, followed by Fitzpatrick, Joey Brennan all the way from 17th, and Shon Elk.
Heat races were won by Chuck Eckert and Fitzpatrick.
A special cash dash for the Sportsman division topped off the evening, sponsored by long time Big Diamond supporter and good friend of the Fayash family; Mike Radocha. Wayne Witmer, Doug Hendricks, and Mike Lisowski were the combatants in this five lap event, and when the dust settled Witmer took home the $298 top prize, followed by Lisowski ($157) and Hendricks ($45).
Racing returns to Big Diamond Speedway this coming Tuesday, June 24th with the first appearance in five years of the World of Outlaw Late Models. Back on June 24th, 2009, Josh Richards took home the victory in the "Coal Country 40" feature event, collecting $7,600 for his efforts. This years "Diamond Shines 40" will pay a hefty $8,000 to win and $600 just to take the green in the feature event. Leading the Outlaw contingent into town will be current point leader and four time tour winner Darrell Lanigan. Aside from his World Of Outlaw victories, Lanigan currently has two other wins this season and 17 top five finishes in 21 events. Also expected are Pennsylvania's own Rick Eckert and Chub Frank. Driving the Rocket Chassis house car this season, Eckert has five wins to his credit, including victories in two of the first five "DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour" races currently going on in the mid-western United States. Out of 36 races run so far this season, Eckert has finished in the top ten 27 times. Frank has one win in 20 starts this season, that win coming on June 1st at the Eriez Speedway. Also expected to be in competition are Modified and Late Model sensation Tim McCreadie, Shane Clanton, Morgan Bagley, Eric Wells, Clint Smith, Frankie Heckenast Jr., Chase Junghans, Rick 'Boom' Briggs, and many more.
