Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints Set For Thunder Mountain Speedway Debut Saturday, August 30; Huge ‘Sprint Car Saturday Night’ Event Planned; BD Motorsports Media/Karl Spoonhower Co-Promotion To Include CRSA 305 Sprint Cars & SRP Micro-Sprints

CENTER LISLE, NY - For the first time in speedway history, the lightning-fast 360 Sprint Cars of the Empire Super Sprints (ESS) will descend on Thunder Mountain Speedway in 2014.

In a joint announcement involving ESS management and BD Motorsports Media LLC during the Eastern Motorsport Press Association Convention Saturday, Jan. 4 at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa., the inaugural ESS appearance at Thunder Mountain was set for Saturday, Aug. 30 during the series’ Lucas Oil-backed 31st anniversary tour.

The Labor Day weekend Saturday spectacular at Thunder Mountain will be co-promoted by Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media and speedway owner Karl Spoonhower. It will mark the second co-promotion of the ‘14 season for Deyo and Spoonhower, who have teamed up for the previously announced ‘Lightning on the Mountain’ presented by Rochinski Contracting Services 50-lap big-block/small-block Modified Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP event on Tuesday, May 20 (rain date: May 21).

The 360 Sprint Cars of ESS will run 25 laps for a minimum of $2,000 to win in their debut at Thunder Mountain, a racy, tire-wear-friendly three-eighths-mile clay oval located in Center Lisle, N.Y., minutes off the Whitney Point/Lisle interchange (Exit 8) on Interstate 81 (approximately 20 miles north of Binghamton).

Marketing partners are currently being sought to increase the ESS payout. Additionally, competitors will have the opportunity to race for lap money and other bonuses and contingency awards.

Fireworks will be part of the ‘Sprint Car Saturday Night’ special, in addition to a pre-race holiday picnic/barbecue.

To complete the ‘Sprint Car Saturday Night’ theme, the CRSA 305 Sprint Cars and SRP 600cc Micro-Sprints will be part of the program.

Spoonhower, who built the speedway in the early 1990s, has returned to the helm of Thunder Mountain for the ‘14 campaign after seven years away from the sport. Since announcing his return in November, he has resurfaced the entire track with two to three feet of new clay, repaired the entrance road to the facility, renovated towers, concession stands and other buildings and has begun work on a general cleanup of the grounds.

Spoonhower, a 58-year-old businessman from Berkshire, N.Y., will operate Thunder Mountain on Saturday nights - as he had done so successfully during his previous run as a promoter - with Modifieds headlining a weekly card that will include Sportsman, Sport Trucks, Street Stocks, Thunder Dogs and Four Cylinders.
Deyo, a special events promoter in the dirt Modified realm, will present his second 360 Sprint Car event of the ‘14 season at Thunder Mountain. On June 17 (rain date: June 18), he is slated to partner with superstar driver Stewart Friesen on a 25-lap, $3,000 to win, $250 to start 360 Sprint Car special at New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway.

The ‘Turnpike 25’ accompanies the Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. ‘Dirty Jersey 60’ Super DIRTcar Series big-block 60-lap event at the Garden State showplace.
ESS president Dean Reynolds is pleased to add Thunder Mountain to the fold.

“Thunder Mountain is a track we have targeted for years to hold an ESS event: it has a great location,” Reynolds said. “I’ve always wanted a show there. We’re thrilled to team up with BD Motorsports Media for this show. We know it will be special. And we are all happy to have Karl back at Thunder Mountain: we’ve heard about all the good things he’s done already. We’re proud to be aligned with Brett and Karl.”

The Thunder Mountain event fits well on the ESS schedule for Labor Day weekend. An event had already been scheduled for Utica-Rome (N.Y.) Speedway on Sunday (Aug. 31), providing a two-day New York swing.

“This race at Thunder Mountain is a nice compliment for us on Labor Day weekend,” Reynolds said. “Having the two races back-to-back will be favorable for Canadians to come down for the weekend. We could also pull some New Jersey and Pennsylvania teams up from the south for both shows.”
