Sell Wins First Career 410 Sprint Car Feature at the Final Showdown at SSP on Saturday

 

 

Newberrytown, PA (November 16, 2013) – The Final Showdown for the Super Sprint Cars at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Saturday afternoon, November 16 went to Derek Sell of Royersford.  The victory was Sell’s first career 410 Sprint Car win and was worth $10,010 to commemorate Todd and Rhonda Fisher’s first ten years of owning the speedway.  This was the highest paying race ever held at SSP in its 59 year history.  Josh Beard of York took the 358 Sprint Car portion as well claiming the 20-lap feature event.

 

By virtue of qualifying sixth in time trials, Derek Sell started in the pole position of the 30-lap 410 Sprint Car feature event.  At the green, Sell grabbed the early lead.  Blaine Heimbach and Brent Marks applied immediate pressure on the leader Derek Sell.  Brian Leppo entered the fray by lap 5.  Leppo flipped on lap 12 after a part failed on his car, collecting Donnie Krietz and Davey Franek in the accident.  All drivers were ninjured.  On the restart, Sell continued to set the pace with Blaine Heimbach challenging on the low side.  On lap 20, Logan Schuchart moved past Heimbach for the runner-up spot after starting 8^th.  Schuchart then set his sights on the leader.  With one circuit remaining, Schuchart was on the rear bumper of the leader.  Going into turn three, Schuchart slid in front of the leader.  Sell did not falter as he ducked low in a drag race to the finish, Sell won the race to the line by half a car length over Schuchart.  Lance Dewease finished with a last lap pass to claim third over Heimbach.  Greg Hodnett rounded out the top five. 

 

Heat race wins went to Justin Barger, Logan Schuchart and Greg Hodnett.  Tim Glatfelter won the consolation event.  Brian Leppo was the fast qualifier in time trials and coming very close to breaking his old record, missing it by 0.015 seconds.

 

In the 20-lap 358 Sprint Car feature, Josh Beard took the lead from the pole position with Brad McClelland in tow.  A few cautions closed up the field, but the real race came down the last lap coming out of turn four when Austin Hogue made a challenge for the lead coming to the finish line.  Hogue came up about five feet short at the end and settled for second behind Beard, who took the win.  McClelland finished in third, followed by Tyler Ross in fourth.  Dale Hammaker rounded out the top five.  Qualifying heat race winners were Dale Hammaker, Austin Hogue and Brad McClelland.  McClelland set a new 8-lap track record for 358 Sprint Cars at 2:09.21 besting the old record by 7 seconds.  The old record was held by Tim Wagaman at 2:16.18.
