Daryn Pittman, Josh Richards and Brett Hearn were crowned champions in front of a tremendous standing-room-only crowd Saturday night at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, concluding three jam-packed days of racing at the seventh annual World of Outlaws World Finals. Richards, Paul McMahan, and Stewart Friesen were the evening's A-Feature winners.
Fans from 50 states, seven Canadian provinces, Australia,
France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom packed the grandstands for the
third night of the World Finals at the lightning-fast, four-tenths-mile clay
oval. The three-day event brings together dirt racing's three premier divisions,
the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series, the World of Outlaws Late Model
Series and the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds, to end their seasons
and crown their respective champions.
With Richards clinching his third World of Outlaws Late Model
Series championship last night, Saturday was all about going for the win.
Richards did just that by sitting on the pole and leading every lap until the
checkers.
"We went out there and just had fun," said Richards. "I love
coming here and I want to thank all the fans for coming out. This is definitely
a really awesome event and icing on the cake."
The race saw six cautions including a mechanical issue for
Darrell Lanigan, a wreck that collected contender Steve Francis and a multi-car
wreck that collected Tim McCreadie. Cautions kept the racing close and allowed
competitors to get to the back of Richard's bumper, with Rick Eckert coming the
closest. Eckert put up a fight, trying every line possible to run down Richards,
but came up short in the end.
Richards scored the win and the 2013 championship followed by
Eckert, Bobby Pierce in in third place, John Blankenship in fourth and Dan Stone
rounding out the top 5.
Jimmy Owens, Josh Richards, Tyler Reddick, John Blankenship,
Bub McCool and Dan Stone won the eight-lap heat races for the late models, while
Darrell Lanigan, Kenny Moreland and Brandon Sheppard topped the 12-lap late
model B-Features.
Paul McMahan took the lead from Jason Sides on lap 26 of the
30-lap World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series and held on to it for his third
win at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. Sides took the lead from polesitter Steve
Kinser on lap 2, and stayed out front through four caution periods.
"Tonight Barry Jackson and all the guys on my crew, they
tuned the car right up," said McMahan. "When money was on the line that car came
in. Jason (Sides) had a heck of a pace there on the bottom. I just kind of ran
with him until we hit lap traffic and I moved to the top."
The first caution fell on lap 6 for Shane Stewart who pulled
off the track. Ryan Smith spun on lap 13 on the frontstretch to bring out the
second yellow flag. Tim Shaffer brought out the third yellow on lap 15 with a
flat left rear tire while running in second place. Sammy Swindell made a run
toward the front of the pack, but brought out the final caution when he scraped
the wall in turns 1 and 2 on lap 17.
Sides finished second, Donny Schatz finished third, Kraig
Kinser in fourth and Steve Kinser in fifth.
"My wife hasn't been to a race all year long that I won. To
have her, my mom and dad and my aunt and uncle here; It was just an all-around
great night," continued McMahan. "We won back in May but to win in front of a
crowd like this and a World Finals race ranks right up there with everything
else."
Daryn Pittman locked up the 2013 World of Outlaw STP Sprint
Car Series championship by finishing twelfth, with just a 14 point lead over
Schatz, the closest in series history.
The eight-lap heat race winners in the World of Outlaws STP
Sprint Car Series were Kraig Kinser, Logan Schuchart, Greg Wilson, Brian Brown
and Joey Saldana.
Todd Hoddick emerged victorious in the D-Feature. Mark
Dobmeier led the field to the checkered flag in the C-Feature, while Randy
Hannagan brought home the B-Feature win. Steve Kinser claimed the win in the
Sprint Car Dash to earn the pole position in Saturday's A-Feature.
Ryan Godown led the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds
to the green for Saturday night's A-Feature, but was quickly overtaken by Brett
Hearn on lap 2. Battles were tight in the back of the field but Hearn quickly
stretched his lead out on the top 5.
Hearn looked poised to take home another World Finals win
until a late race caution for a mechanical issue for Tim McCreadie closed the
field and gave second-place Friesen a chance at overtaking Hearn. Friesen never
let Hearn pull away from him and he continued to close the gap and reel him in.
Going into Turn 4 with only two laps to go, Friesen completed the pass to get
around Hearn and never looked back.
In a race that only included two cautions, Friesen took home
the win followed by 2013 Super DIRTcar Big Block Modified champion Hearn in
second, Jimmy Phelps in third, Godown in fourth and Duane Howard completing the
top 5.
"Last night we learned a few things and we applied what we
learned to today. My guys worked their tails off to give me a great race car. We
work hard and we play hard," said Friesen. "It's great for momentum heading into
the winter months and next year. We passed the best in the business, Brett is an
idol of mine."
Carey Terrance and Peter Britten won the two Super DIRTcar
Series B-Features.
