News from the Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-VP Racing Fuels Short Track SuperNationals – ‘The Working Man’s Race’
For Immediate Release/Oct. 12, 2013
Friday Night Lights: Kenny Hammond Rolls To $1,500 Sportsman Victory During Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-VP Racing Fuels Short Track SuperNationals at Five Mile Point Friday; Gary Roberts (IMCA-style Modified) and Will Eastman (XCel 600 Modified) Also Triumph
KIRKWOOD, NY – Kenny Hammond rolled to a convincing victory in Friday night’s Sportsman portion of the Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-VP Racing Fuels Short Track SuperNationals at Five Mile Point Speedway.
Hammond, of Speedsville, N.Y., earned $1,500 for a green-to-checkered run in the 30-lap main, the first Sportsman (Open & Crate 602) event contested during the ‘Working Man’s Race’ since the inaugural Short Track SuperNationals at N.Y.’s Afton Speedway in 2006.
Hammond, a Five Mile Point track regular, opted for traditional windows on his Hunt’s Auto Service No. 30, rather than bolting on sail panels, which were permitted for the special.
“This is what we know,” Hammond said in Victory Lane, where he received a “working man’s” construction hat, a $50 gift certificate to Bob Hilbert Sportswear and a party platter from the Court Street Subway. Hammond is now a guaranteed starter in the 100-lap, $2,555-to-win Race of Champions Dirt Sportsman Tour finale at Five Mile Point on Nov. 1.
“We run the windows all year, so we decided to keep them on for tonight. Maybe we got lucky, but we had a good car.”
Hammond, starting from the pole, outgunned fellow front-row starter Tom Collins on the opening lap. He was never headed. Collins, a Skyline (N.Y.) Raceway regular from Groton, N.Y., momentarily relinquished second spot to Grandview (Pa.) Speedway and Big Diamond (Pa.) Speedway champion Jared Umbenhauer on lap 11. However, he regained the position on a lap-12 restart and chased Hammond to the finish.
Sixth-starter Umbenhauer of Richland, Pa. driving the Barry Bashore-owned No. 5, Brian White of Owego, N.Y. (from ninth), and Mike Ricci of Tillson, N.Y., who started 15th, completed the front five.
Forty-eight Sportsman signed in for the program. Heat winners were Collins, Umbenhauer, P.J. Goodwin, Mike Austin and Brian White. Consolation victors were Kevin Jordan and Jeff Hulseapple.
Sporting sail panels on his No. U2 IMCA-style Modified, Gary Roberts of Nineveh Junction, N.Y. scored a wire-to-wire victory in the 20-lap main event. Roberts, a veteran racer in the Southern Tier, held off the advances of teenager Jarred Spaulding. Tanner Harpell, Gary Smith and Matt Roberts – the victor’s son – completed the front five.
Will Eastman of Oneonta, N.Y., topped a caution-plagued 20-lap main for the XCel 600 Modifieds. Eastman turned back the advances of Tim Frantz throughout the race’s distance. Richie Hitzler, Josh Pepe and Jonathan Pepe finished third through fifth, respectively.
SUPERNATIONALS SIDENOTES: A jammed pit area was bustling with 93 race cars in competition: 48 Sportsman, 23 IMCA-style Modifieds and 22 XCel 600 Modifieds. Roughly 30 Modifieds took hot laps in advance of the Saturday headliner….
Danny Tyler’s ninth-place finish in the Sportsman event came after his No. 97T suffered two flat tires during race’s mid-portions. Tyler was driving the same Teo-Pro car that he used to win the Modified portion of the SuperNationals in ’12….
Both the Sportsman and IMCA-style Modified fields featured a mix of traditional windows and sail panels for the special event….
Mike Ricci charged hard in the final laps to snag a fifth-place Sportsman finish in the Jimmy Wells-owned No. 831. “We needed more laps,” Ricci, the inaugural SuperNationals Modified winner, said afterward. “We were just getting going.”
Ricci will drive the same car in the Saturday Modified event….
Tough break for Pennsylvania’s Jason Neidlinger, who qualified through the second Sportsman consolation but came up light on the scales….
Heat winners were Skylar Sherriff, Jonathan Pepe and Eastman (XCel 600 Modified); and Gary Roberts, Mike Stoddard and Matt Roberts (IMCA-style Modified)….
Solid night for the Hunt’s Auto Service team, finishing first (Hammond), fourth (Brian White) and seventh (Eddie White) in the Sportsman main….
Racing resumes today, Saturday, Oct. 12, with day two of the Short Track SuperNationals at Five Mile Point Speedway.
Saturday’s (Oct. 12) program includes the Modified 50-lap event plus Race of Champions Street Stocks (25 laps) and Four Cylinders (18 laps). There is a rain date of Sunday (Oct. 13) in place.
On Saturday, pit gates open at 2 p.m., with grandstand gates swinging open at 3 p.m. RoC Street Stock and Four Cylinder hot laps get underway at 4 p.m., with their qualifying set to start at 4:45 p.m. Modifieds hit the track at 5:45 p.m. with hot laps and qualifying at 6:30 p.m.
