Unforgettable: Craig Hanson Upsets 79-Car Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-VP Racing Fuels Short Track SuperNationals Modified Field In First Five Mile Point Start; Glen Ridge & Fonda Regular Earns $6,062 Plus Contingencies In Sixth ‘Working Man’s Race’ Before Full House
KIRKWOOD, NY – Craig Hanson will never forget his first visit to Five Mile Point Speedway.
On Saturday night, Hanson made his debut at the Southern Tier oval a victorious one. He bested a banner 79-car big-block/small-block Modified field to win the Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-VP Racing Fuels Short Track SuperNationals. The Tribes Hill, N.Y., driver – who races regularly in New York’s Capital District at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park and Fonda Speedway – took home $6,062 in cash and a long list of contingencies following an upset triumph.
The 29-year-old Hanson becomes the sixth different Short Track SuperNationals Modified winner in as many events. Drivers representing New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware converged on Five Mile Point for the ‘Working Man’s Race’ of 2013.
“Today was the first time I ever saw the place,” a smiling Hanson said from his hauler afterward. “Heck, we even pulled into the wrong parking lot (Hanson drove his hauler into the spectator lot upon arrival to the track, not able to locate the pit gate). This is unbelievable.”
Hanson, a four-time Glen Ridge winner this season, led the race’s final 44 laps driving his family-owned No. 20c, surviving a slew of cautions and a late challenge from Modified rookie Anthony Perrego.
Under ideal weather conditions, the Brett Deyo-promoted event was contested before a packed house. The pit area overflowed with 137 race cars in action for the second day of the Short Track SuperNationals weekend.
Starting third, Hanson ducked beneath second-generation driver Byron Worthing to grab the lead at lap six. Perrego, who started 10th, was on the charge from the outset driving Gary Mann’s New York Truck Parts No. 55. By lap 14, Perrego arrived in second spot and began his pursuit of the leader.
During a long stretch of green-flag racing from laps 14-42, Hanson and Perrego carved through slower traffic. Hanson, running the extreme inside lane of the quarter-mile oval, worked the lapped cars to perfection. Perrego’s most serious bid for the lead came on lap 41, when he pulled even with Hanson utilizing the outside lane of turns three and four.
Hanson prevailed on the frontstretch and held the lead when the race was slowed by a caution on lap 42. During the yellow period, several lead-lap cars headed to the pits with flat right-rear tires.
“I couldn’t wait for it to be over,” admitted Hanson. “I saw other guys were getting flat tires and I was worried about mine.”
Hanson survived two final restarts – on laps 45 and 46 – to score what he considers the biggest win of his career.
“The most I’d ever won was $2,200 on a regular night at Fonda,” he said.
Hanson took home $6,062 in cash including the $1,500 Alpine Building Supply ‘Roll the Dice Challenge’ bonus, $100 as a heat-race winner, $102 from Mirabilis Cattle as the first driver across the line under 30 years old, $860 in lap money ($500 for leading lap 25 courtesy of Dale and Sue Smith), $10 from the All Fab ‘Bonus Bucks’ program, a guaranteed redraw position in the ‘King of the Can’ at Penn Can Speedway Friday (Oct. 18), a $100 certificate for Bob Hilbert Sportswear, a party sub from Court Street Subway, 45 cans of beer, a custom cooler, two VP Racing Fuels jugs and a large trophy from S&W Awards.
Perrego, 19, of Montgomery, N.Y., settled for second-place pay with a soft right-rear tire in the final laps. Perrego collected a bonus of $351 in honor of Mike Colsten as the first driver across the line not having won a Modified feature this season.
Accord (N.Y.) Speedway Modified champion Jackie Brown Jr. of Hurley, N.Y., drove from ninth to finish third in his family-owned Hig Fab No. 6X. Fulton (N.Y.) Speedway champion Pat Ward of Genoa, N.Y. - added as a guaranteed starter to the event via his ‘American Racer-Lias Tire Road to the SuperNationals’ triumph at Glen Ridge Sept. 27 - surged forward in the final laps to place fourth from 31st starting position. Ward took home the $250 Tonarlo’s Pizza Hard Charger Award for his 27-position ascent.
Chad Phelps, a Fulton regular from Mexico, N.Y., completed the top five. Phelps started 14th.
Finishing sixth through 10th, respectively, were New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway regular David Van Horn Jr. of Phillipsburg, N.J., who ran inside the top-six for the entire distance; 34th-starter Mike Colsten of Binghamton, N.Y., the ’13 Five Mile Point champion driving Brian Weaver’s No. 1A after his No. 51 was damaged in qualifying (Colsten was added as the track point title winner); inaugural SuperNationals winner Mike Ricci of Tillson, N.Y., who started 33rd in the Jimmy Wells No. 831; 23rd-starter Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., driving the Glenn Hyneman-owned No. 126; and Bobby Varin of Sharon Springs, N.Y., who started 18th in Tom Umbenhauer’s No. 19v.
A field of 79 Modifieds attempted to qualify for the event. Heat winners were Tyler Dippel (Wallkill, N.Y.), Hanson, Mike Mahaney (King Ferry, N.Y.), Ken Titus (Kirkwood, N.Y.), Byron Worthing (Owego, N.Y.), Danny Tyler (Cottekill, N.Y.), Van Horn and Kevin Hartnett (Barto, Pa.). Each heat winner pocketed $100 cash thanks to American Racer-Lias Tire, Accord Speedway, Jack’s Race Car Parts, Troyer Race Cars, Keith Sweigart Electric and Hig Fab Chassis.
Consolation wins went to Kyle Weiss (Hamburg, Pa.), Varin, Mike Gular (Green Lane, Pa.) and Tommy Meier (Waldwick, N.J.).
Mike Mammana of Nazareth, Pa., won the last-chance Trackside Products Ed Tauschman Memorial Money Run 3-lap dash to earn a feature starting spot. The Ed Tauschman Memorial Money Run included drivers who missed qualifying by one position in the consolations.
Jonathan Carpenter of New Milford, Pa., continued his dominance of the Southern Tier full-fender ranks with a victory in the 25-lap event for the Race of Champions Street Stocks. Carpenter picked the pole during the redraw and was never headed en route to a $400 payday. Russ Morseman, Earl Zimmer, Shane Wolf Sr. and Matt Spencer trailed.
Nick Griest of Willet, N.Y., topped the 18-lap Four Cylinder main event, his second in the SuperNationals (he previously won in 2011).
Next up for BD Motorsports Media LLC is the Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-VP Racing Fuels ‘King of the Can’ on Friday, Oct. 18 at Penn Can Speedway (rain date: Oct. 20).
