COLEBY FRYE WINS BIG DIAMOND LATE MODELS, SPORTSMAN TO HENDRICKS, ROADRUNNERS POSTPONED
MINERSVILLE, PA - September 15th, 2013
It had been over four years since the Late Models raced at Big Diamond Speedway. Those in attendance would probably agree it was worth the wait.
Coleby Frye executed a text book pass with less than two laps to go to score an exciting victory in the 25 lap Limited Late Model feature, much to the delight of the crowd on hand. It was the first appearance for Late Models of any kind since June 24th, 2009 when Josh Richards won the 40 lap Coal Country 40 World of Outlaws sanctioned event.
Ron Kline led the first ten laps of the event from his pole starting position before Coleby Frye was able to wrestle away the lead following a lap 10 restart. Frye led for several laps before Grant Adams passed three cars at one time coming off turn two, including Frye for the lead. Adams led, with Frye right in his tracks, until the pair took the two to go signal. Entering turn one, Frye went as low as you can possibly go without hitting the yuke tire, driving to the inside of Adams to take the top spot. He was able to lead the final lap and a half for the win and the $1,000 payday. Frye had started the feature event in the 10th position. Adams was able to hold on for second, followed by Ron Kline, Sean Merkel, and Travis Mease. Sixth thru tenth were Danny Snyder, Sam Schlosberg, Steve Nederostek, Steve Todorow, and Jason Miller.
After the initial start was null and void after a caution for a crash in turn three, Shawn Light took the lead from his out side pole starting position and raced away from the field for first half of the event. Slowly but surely, sixth starting Kevin Beach Jr. started to pick away at the lead though, and coming down to complete lap 19, he was primed to pass for the top spot. Then disaster struck. Running the outside grove, Beach was outside of Light when Light appeared to pinch Beach into the wall, first resulting in Beach riding the concrete barrier, then having his car spin like a top multiple times, knocking down three support poles and about 20' feet of the catch fence. The red was displayed immediately, but when it was all over, Beach's car sat on the front stretch in ruins and the front stretch catch fence was destroyed. Beach had to be restrained from going after the #91 of Light, who sat in turn two after stopping there for the red flag. With the catch fence being destroyed, for the safety of fans and competitors alike, officials had no choice but to checker the event with 19 of 25 laps complete and postpone the Roadrunner feature until next Sunday. Light was penalized for rough riding and placed as the last car on the lead lap. This series of events led to 3rd place running Doug Hendricks all of a sudden being declared the winner of the wild event. Joe Mooney came home second for his best finish of the season, followed by Tim Fitzpatrick, Wayne Witmer, and rookie Robin Schultz. Sixth thru tenth were Jared Umbenhauer, Ray Woodall Jr., Craig Whitmoyer, Andrew Cozze, and Jason James.
As mentioned, the 20 lap Roadrunner feature will be run next week, making it double features for the Savage 61 Roadrunners next Sunday, September 22nd. Also on the card will be the ZY Pyrotechnics Modifieds after a one week hiatus, and the USS Achey Sportsman.
