Creeden Emerges From Lead-Swapping Battle With Mike Mahaney, Survives A Slew Of
Challenges for $5,925 New York Truck Parts ‘Battle of the Bullring’ Modified
Victory; Anthony Perrego Takes Home $1,860 Sportsman
Payday
ACCORD, NY -
First, Danny Creeden emerged from a lead-swapping battle with Mike Mahaney.
Then, he staved off a pack of four cars through late-race lapped traffic to
register the most lucrative victory of his career on Tuesday night at Accord
Speedway.
Creeden, a
second-generation driver from Middletown, N.Y., who races regularly at Accord on
Friday nights, earned $5,925 as the victor in the first New York Truck Parts
‘Battle of the Bullring’ at the Ulster County quarter-mile. The first midweek
Modified event at Accord since May 14, 2003 drew a capacity crowd and a talented
field of 46 big-block/small-block Modifieds. The special was a co-promotion
involving BD Motorsports Media LLC and speedway promoters Gary and Donna
Palmer.
“I had to race my
butt off tonight,” exclaimed Creeden, 30, after exiting his Teo-Pro car in
Victory Lane. “That lapped traffic was tough. I knew they were all right there.
This is huge for us.”
Invader Mike
Mahaney launched off the pole and darted into the lead at the outset in the
Charlie Davis-owned No. 21. Creeden started fourth and motored into second by
lap two.
Creeden and
Mahaney diced for position until Creeden took over on lap 10 with an inside
pass. Mahaney fought back, regaining the top spot on a 14th-lap restart. Creeden
was back out front on lap 18.
Mahaney, the
24-year-old King Ferry, N.Y., driver visiting Accord for the second time in his
career, slipped inside Creeden on the 23rd go-round and the battle resumed.
Following a side-by-side tussle, Creeden edged in front to lead lap 26 and earn
a $200 Halfway Leader bonus from HigFab. Meanwhile, 12th-starter Mike Ricci (a
multi-time track champ), Accord point leader Jackie Brown Jr. (who was towed off
the speedway with a tie-rod issue from a lap-one incident and charged from the
rear) and seventh-starter Andy Bachetti joined the fray.
Swapping
positions and dicing through lapped traffic, the crowd rose to its feet to watch
a five-car scramble for the top spot.
Hurley, N.Y.’s
Brown stormed into second on lap 29 with Ricci, driving the Sherlock Motorsports
No. 10, in tow. As the leaders negotiated lapped traffic inside the final 10
laps, Brown pressured Creeden as Ricci attempted to pass both in the outside
lane.
Creeden was out
front to earn $150 as the leader of lap 40 in memory of late Accord car owner
Rene Downes.
Moments before a
caution on lap 48, Ricci and Brown made side-to-side contact in turn three,
busting the rear suspension on Ricci’s mount. He attempted to maintain third
position, but ultimately collided with Bachetti on the backstretch to bring out
the final yellow on lap 49.
Creeden held on
over the final two laps for the $5,100 payday. With lap money and bonuses, his
earnings topped out at $5,925.
Brown salvaged a
runner-up finish after his incident on the opening lap.
“I had nowhere to
go on the first lap and it blew out the tie-rod,” Brown said. “The car was
awesome. We drove back up there and I thought I might have been able to do
something with Danny if I didn’t get caught up in traffic.”
Defending Accord
champion Bachetti, of Sheffield, Mass, finished a close third in the Steve Hough
Motors No. 34. Rick Laubach of Quakertown, Pa., drove from 19th starting
position to finish fourth in his first start driving Gary Mann’s No. 55. Laubach
was called upon to fill the seat on Sunday. Pat Ward of Genoa, N.Y., started
20th and finished fifth in the Gypsum Racing Nop. 42P.
Finishing sixth
through 10th, respectively, were Billy Decker of Unadilla, N.Y., (recovering
from a spin on lap two); Capital District star Kenny Tremont of West Sand Lake,
N.Y., from 13th spot in a second Brown Racing entry; 15th-starter Tommy Meier of
Waldwick, N.J.; Mahaney, who faded in the final laps with tire issues; and
Sportsman star Anthony Perrego of Walden, N.Y., in a second Gary Mann No. 55
entry.
Modified heat
winners were Brett Tonkin (Carbondale, Pa.), Creeden, Billy Pauch Jr.
(Frenchtown, N.J.), Jerry Higbie Jr. (Newburgh, N.Y.), Mahaney and Kenny
Boniface (Pine Bush, N.Y.).
Jerry Higbie Jr.
of Newburgh, N.Y., earned $555 as the winner of a special, five-lap Joe Winne
Memorial Dash for Cash in memory of the former Accord champion who passed away
during the 2000 running of Eastern States Weekend at Orange County (N.Y.) Fair
Speedway. Higbie bested Mahaney, Creeden, Pauch, Tonkin and Boniface in the
dash. The Dash for Cash was made possible via contributions from Jim Winchell,
Tom Ryan and Ricci's Barber Shop.
Consolation
victors were Laubach, Ward and Jeff Heotzler (Wallkill, N.Y.).
Dave Hinsch
(Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) and John McClelland (Martinsville, N.J) earned the 25th
and 26th feature starting spots during the five-lap ‘Bull Rush’ Last Chance
Qualifier. The positions were sponsored by Superior Remodeling and Elmo’s Auto
Body.
Young Anthony
Perrego of Walden, N.Y., dominated the Sportsman 25-lap event, earning a huge
$1,860 (including lap money and $100 as the Halfway Leader from Above All Auto
Repair) for 25 laps of racing. Perrego started fourth, drove to the lead at the
outset and was never headed in a rough-and-tumble main. Brian Krummel of
Middletown, N.Y., chased Perrego to the finish. Completing the top five were
Tommy Johnson of New Paltz, N.Y., Tyler Boniface of Pine Bush, N.Y., and Danny
Tyler of Cottekill, N.Y.
The Sportsman
payout was boosted by Ultimate Restoration (winner’s share) and Above All Auto
Repair (last 10 positions).
Heat winners were
Johnson, Krummel, Perrego and Tyler Dippel with 36 Sportsman (Open and Crate
602) in the pits. Mike DuBois and Kevin Ward split the
consolations.

Modified event paying $455 to start. To learn more, visit www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com, like BD Motorsports Media
