Something For Everyone Wednesday At Huge I-88 Speedway ‘Crazy 8s Special’ Event; $30,006 Waiting For Modified Drivers; Talented Field Set; $16 Admission & Pre-Race “Fan Fest” For Fans

AFTON, NY –
There will be something for everyone at I-88 Speedway on Wednesday, July 24.
Fans and competitors were taken into account during the planning of the inaugural ‘Crazy 8s Special’ hosted at I-88 Speedway, the racy 3/10ths-mile located on the Afton, N.Y., fairgrounds. The first ‘Crazy 8s Special’ is headlined by a 48-lap big-block/small-block Modified main event. The touring BRP CanAm Late Models make their first-ever I-88 appearance in a 30-lap main event for a two-division program.
On Wednesday (rain date: Thursday, July 25), pit gates open at 4 p.m. Grandstand gates open at 5 p.m. Hot laps are planned for 6:30 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m.
Thanks to a long list of bonuses and lap sponsors, Modified racers will be competing for a mammoth cash total of $30,006 at the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ event. That number does not include product giveaways and other contingency awards. All of the race’s 48 laps have been sold for a minimum of $20 – some sold twice – for a lap money total of $2,093.
Olum’s has backed a huge Halfway Bonus of $888 for the driver leading on the 24th lap of the main event.
Lap money will be distributed in ‘Crazy 8s’ fashion, rotating through the top-eight positions during the main. This system spreads out the cash to more drivers and teams.
The race winner will take home a base of $6,888 should they post the $25 88 BC Building Supplies “Gambler’s Challenge” prior to the start of qualifying. Fifth-place pays $1,488, 10th-place $888, with $388 reserved just to take the green flag.
A complete list of special awards and bonuses has been posted online at www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com. Rules and other specific information can also be found on the BD Motorsports Media website.
Competitors and spectators should enjoy the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ qualifying procedure for Modifieds, which is comprised of group timed dashes with an invert to insure on-track action during heat races.
Invaders from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are expected to challenge the I-88 regulars. Among the Empire State contingent are Tim McCreadie of Watertown, recent Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour winner at I-88 Matt Sheppard of Waterloo, Billy Decker of Unadilla, Jimmy Phelps of Baldwinsville, the father and son team of Bobby and Danny Varin, both of Sharon Springs, Jerry Higbie Jr. of Newburgh, Pat Ward of Genoa (last year’s Wade Decker Memorial winner at I-88), Brian Weaver of Windsor, Donnie Lawson of Woodhull, JaMike Sowle of Fultonville, Tony Pepicelli of Rotterdam, Rich Ricci Jr. of New Paltz and many more.
The Pennsylvania contingent is led by recent DIRT Hall of Fame inductee Frank Cozze of Wind Gap, Ryan Watt of Boyertown (the winner of June’s rich ‘Clash at the Can’ event at Pa.’s Penn Can Speedway), Rick Laubach of Quakertown (who finished third in his I-88 debut during the June RoC event), Joey Grammes of Kunkletown, Alan Rudalavage of Newton Lake, Brian Malcolm of Lake Ariel, Jeff Crambo of Throop and others. New Jersey’s Jimmy Horton (Neshanic Station) is poised to challenge for an I-88 victory.
Representing the Canadian province of Ontario, Stewart Friesen (Niagara-on-the-Lake) will be in the field. Friesen, one of the Northeast’s leading winners, is a past I-88 victor.
I-88 regulars looking to stand their ground include defending track champion Mitch Gibbs of North Norwich, Shaun Walker of Masonville, Mike Mahaney of King Ferry, Brett Tonkin of Carbondale, Pa., Mike Clapperton of Sidney, Paul Jensen of West Edmeston, Jim Gabriel Jr. of Binghamton, brothers Don and Rodney Hart, both of Bainbridge and more.
Defending champion John Waters of Whitesville leads the BRP CanAm Late Model Series championship battle into the I-88 main event.
For fans, there will be a pre-race “Fan Fest” on the horse track starting at 5:30 p.m. There will be race cars on display (Modifieds and Late Models), drivers available for autographs, giveaways and DJ All-Day Entertainment providing music.
Apparel and a souvenir program book (24 pages, eight pages of color) have been produced for the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ and will be on sale at the track. A program book/tee-shirt combo sells for $20. There will also be collectibles vendors in the midway area.
Grandstand admission for the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ is just $16 for Adults. Students (ages 9-14) are $7 and Kids 8 and younger are FREE. Camping is permitted on the speedway grounds and is free of charge.
The ‘Crazy 8s Special’ is a co-promotion involving Ron Ford and Jamie Page, who operate I-88 Speedway, and Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media LLC.
I-88 Speedway is located off I-88 Exit 7 in the Village of Afton, N.Y. (outside of Binghamton, N.Y.) and is easily accessible from the Capital District, southeastern New York, Pennsylvania/New Jersey, Central and Western New York. To learn more about the speedway, visit www.i-88speedway.com.
