BIG DIAMOND FANDEMONIUM A HUGE SUCCESS - MANMILLER WINS MODIFIEDS,
UMBENHAUER AND BERZOWSKI ALSO VICTORIOUS
MINERSVILLE, PA - JULY 21th,
2013
"Now you've seen how awesome this is, so now we need you to keep
coming back".
Those were the words from Modified feature winner and 2011
track champion Doug Manmiller after executing an exciting last lap pass of Shawn
Fitzpatrick for the victory Friday evening.
A packed house witnessed the
victory as track owners Jake and Jasmine Smulley presented FANdemonium, which
offered free grandstand admission to everyone in attendance. There were tons of
giveaways to the fans, almost two dozen cars on display, and many other
activities that kept the large crowd buzzing all night long.
Kevin Albert
Jr. took the early lead from his pole starting position, but was soon overtaken
by second starting Shawn Fitzpatrick. The races only caution occurred on lap
#7, and after the caution Fitzpatrick continued to lead. All the while,
Manmiller was slowly moving forward from his seventh starting position. With
five to go, Manmiller disposed of second place running Albert and set his sights
on leader Fitzpatrick. Lap after lap, Manmiller continued to gain ground on
Fitzpatrick, and with one two go he was right on his tail. Fitzpatrick went
into turn one a little too hot and hopped the cushion, leaving just enough room
for Manmiller to squeeze by and go on to win by a little over a car length. The
win was the tenth of Manmiller's career at Big Diamond, moving him into a tie
with Dave Schoffstall on the all time win list. A disappointed Fitzpatrick
finished a season best second, followed by point leader Craig Von Dohren, Jeff
Strunk, and Albert. Frank Cozze, Meme Desantis, Andy Burkhart, Tim Buckwalter,
and Rick Laubach, making his first start of the year in the Eastern Rigging #11
car, rounded out the top ten. Heat races were won by Albert Jr, Fitzpatrick,
and Kevin Smith.
Driving with a heavy heart, Jared Umbenhauer of
Richland drove Robert Derfler's No. 16D to victory in the 20-lap sportsman main
event. Umbenhauer lost his grandfather earlier in the the week. Umbenhauer,
who started 11th and had worked his way into 6th position before a front stretch
crash eliminated many of the top five, took the lead on the lap 13 restart after
the caution. From there he drove away to a huge margin of victory, scoring his
fourth win of the season at Big Diamond and seventh of his young racing career.
Mike Glass finished a season best second, followed by Mike Lisowski, Joe Mooney,
with his first ever top five, and Shawn Light. Last race winner Doug Hendricks
was sixth, followed by Andy Cozze, Andrew Fayash III, Kevin Brady, and Billy
Moyer Jr. Heat races were won by Kevin Beach Jr. and Tim
Fitzpatrick.
Marc Berzowski scored his seventh win of the season in the
Roadrunner division, followed closely by Jeremy Becker. Shon Elk was third,
followed by Kyle Killian, and Tim Fitzpatrick Jr. Heat races were won by TJ
Fitzpatrick and Glenn Rowan.
Racing returns to Big Diamond Speedway this
coming Friday, July 26th with the Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, and Crzy
8's for the fan favorite Roadrunner division. That would be four 8 laps
features, each carrying their own set of points. Should make for an exciting
and "Crazy" night of racing. The entire night is sponsored by Savage
61.
Don't forget, less than two months remain until Labor Day weekend,
when we present the Jack Rich Memorial Coal Cracker 72 race for the ZY
Pyrotechnics 358 Modifieds at Big Diamond Speedway.
The race will be
Sunday, September 1st and will once again be 72 laps paying $10,000 to win.
