SHORT STORY (radio, TV and other media with limited space)
VONDOHREN, UMBENHAUER AND KYLE MERKEL WIN NASCAR FEATURE RACES AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY.

BECHTELSVILLE, PA April 21, 2013. . . For the second time this season both Craig VonDohren and Jared Umbenhauer were able to drive to victory while Kyle Merkel earned his first win of the season at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. VonDohren, a six time track champion, wheeled the Kauffman’s BBQ Chicken/Pioneer Pole Buildings No. 1c to victory in the 30-lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature race. Jared Umbenhauer was able to steer the Eastern Rigging No, 5 to a win in the 25-lap Sportsman feature race while Merkel’s victory came in the 25-lap NASCAR Late Model feature race.
Brad Grim set the pace for the 30-car starting field in the 30-lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature and set the pace until the 19th circuit when challenger VonDohren and leader Grim made contact. VonDohren took the top spot and Grim was able to regain control but dropped back to third. In the closing laps VonDohren had Frank Cozze to deal with and was able to hold on for his second win of the season. Cozze had his best of the season effort with a second followed by Brad Grim, Jason Clauss and Jeff Strunk.
The 25-lap Sportsman feature had Ron Krex taking the lead at the drop of the green and leading until the 11th circuit when John Kovatch IV went to the front. A few laps later on a restart after a caution Krex took back the front spot but he could not hold off the strong effort of Jared Umbenhauer who came from 15th to grab first on the 19th lap and lead the rest of the way. Second place was taken by Krex followed by Joe Funk, Kovatch and last week’s winner Brett Kressley.
In the Late Model 25 lapper Kyle Merkel, driving the Kochel Equipment/Merkel Rebar No. 117, went to victory lane leading all the laps in the 25-lapper with old brother Sean challenging him in the closing laps but having to settle for second. Third spot was earned by Kory Fleming followed by Danny Snyder and Chuck Schutz.
Heavy rains on Friday left the track under three feet of water. The track crew (Brad Missimer, Scott Schaeffer and Justin Merry)were able to pull off a “miracle” in getting the track prepared for racing.
Racing action returns to Grandview Speedway on Saturday, April 27th with the NASCAR 358 Modifieds, Late Models and Sportsman in action starting at 7 p.m. At least a dozen racing events will be presented.

FULL STORY
VONDOHREN AND UMBENHAUER ARE NOW TWO TIME WINNERS, KYLE MERKEL WINS FIRST LATE MODEL FEATURE OF SEASON AT GRANDVIEW

BECHTELSVILLE, PA April 21, 2013 . . . If you are a betting person you just may want to place a wager that Craig VonDohren will be the NASCAR 358 Champion at Grandview Speedway for the seventh time when the season is complete and Jared Umbenhauer will win his second straight NASCAR Sportsman title.
VonDohren, Umbenhauer and Kyle Merkel were the feature winners at the Berks County clay oval on Saturday night with Oley based VonDohren winning the 30-lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature. Umbenhauer, who calls Richland home, won the 25-lap Sportsman feature race while Kyle Merkel (Gilbertsville) was able to win his first 25-lap Late Model feature race of the season.
Brad Grim led the 30 car starting field to the green in the 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All American Series 358 Modified feature race with former URC sprint car racer Jason Clauss close behind. With one third of the race in the record books soon to be DIRT Modified Hall of Famer Frank Cozze charged into third spot.
At the midway mark Craig VonDohren, coming from 15th starting spot, put his Beartown Recycling/Kauffman’s BBQ Chicken No. 1c in second spot. Grim, the leader, and six time track champion VonDohren, were in a heated battle for the top spot for several laps before the duo made contact headed into Turn 3, with two thirds of the race completed, and VonDohren took the top spot and Grim recovered to hold on to third.
In the late laps Frank Cozze (Wind Gap) came back to be a challenger for the win but had to settle for second as VonDohren was able to hold the top spot to the finish. Grim (Allentown) salvaged a third place finish followed by Jason Clauss (Fleetwood) getting one of his strongest finishes since becoming a regular at Grandview, and nine time track champion Jeff Strunk (Bechtelsville).
In victory lane VonDohren had high praise for his engine builder and the entire team. When the victory lane announced asked him who he would like to thank, “All that are involved” was the short and quick response.
For his winning efforts VonDohren earned $2500 from the track, $250 TP Trailers of Limerick bonus and $150 in VP Racing Fuels product for using VP gas.

Former Late Model racer Ron Krex set the pace at the drop of the green for the 24 car Sportsman feature. Krex was able to keep the top spot for the first ten laps before John Kovatch IV moved to the front. At 14 laps Ken Eckert Jr. spun on the backstretch bringing out the caution and bunching up the field. On the restart Krex was able charge to the front and look destined to win his first feature. However at the 19 lap marker Jared Umbenhauer, coming from 15th starting spot, took the top spot with his Eastern Rigging No. 5 and went on to win his second feature of the season making him a solid favorite to win a second track title. Second spot went to Krex followed by Joe Funk (Coopersburg), John Kovatch IV (Nesquehoning) and last week’s feature winner Brett Kressley (Orefield).
In the 25-lap main event for the NASCAR Late Models Kyle Merkel had control of the first place position at the finish of the first lap and never gave up that spot as he led all the laps to win his first Late Model feature of the season. Older brother Sean, coming from seventh position, tried to mount a challenge and a late race caution did close up the field but Kyle was able to bring his Kochel Equipment/Merkel Rebar No. 117 home first. Second spot did go to Sean (Gilbertsville) followed by Kory Fleming (Milford, NJ), Danny Snyder (Green Lane) and Chuck Schutz (Pottstown).
The Sportsman and Late Model feature winners each earned a $100 bonus from TP Trailers of Limerick and the top finishing Sportsman racer using VP racing gas earns $75 worth of VP product.
When the day started at Grandview the chances of racing being presented were not good as three feet of water covered most of the infield and track area. The track crew consisting of Justin Merry, Scott Schaffer and Brad Missimer were able to pull off some miracles with the assistance of pumps to clear out most of the water and the track was ready for racing at 7:15 p.m.
Qualifying heat victories in the Late Model division were won by Danny Snyder and Kyle Merkel. Heat race victories for the Sportsman racers went to Guy Germano, Jared Umbenhauer and Kyle Borror. Modified qualifying races were won by Eric Biehn, Mike Guler, Jason Clauss and Brad Grim. Consolation races for the Modifieds had Jon Kellner Jr. and Kevin Hirthler winning Scott Davis Sr. won the Sportsman consolation race.
The Hard Charger award for the Modifieds sponsored by Bobby Gunther Walsh went to VonDohren who came from 15th starting spot to win. The Searock Lawn Care Hard Charger award for Sportsman was earned by Jared Umbenhauer as he started 15th and charged to first. In addition Searock presented a $50 bonus to Umbenhauer for being able to start 15th or farther back and win. Jeff Teets’ Salvage Transport Hard Charger award for Late Model went to Chuck Schutz who also started 15th in his feature and was able to gain 10 spots to finish 5th.
Cargo Trailer Sales of Lansdale had $50 gift certificates for 10th place finishers in each feature while Dan’s Deli has their special hoagies for the leader of each feature at the halfway point.
Racing action returns to Grandview Speedway on Saturday, April 27th with the NASCAR 358 Modifieds, Late Models and Sportsman in action starting at 7 p.m. At least a dozen racing events being presented.
