Dates Set For 28th Annual Racing Legends Reunion & Car Show At Fairgrounds Square Mall; Pre-Season Auto Racing Kickoff Set For February 24-March 2, 2013 As Registration Opens

READING, PA - For the 28th consecutive year, the Fairgrounds Square Mall serves as the kickoff location to the auto racing season in Berks County and the surrounding area.

The Racing Legends Reunion & Car Show is set for Sunday, Feb. 24-Saturday, March 2 at the former site of the Reading Fairgrounds Speedway on 5th Street Highway in Muhlenberg Township, Pa. The legendary 'Home of Champions' facility hosted its final event 33 years ago, but is still very much alive in the memories and stories of longtime attendees. Dave Kelly, a Florida resident who visited the show last season, won the historic final event at Reading in June 1979.

The 2013 Racing Legends Reunion & Car Show has been pushed back one week to avoid a conflict with short-track racing in Florida. The new date also provides teams an additional week to prepare their equipment for the weeklong event.
The show is free to the public during mall hours and provides a pre-season showcase of the local motorsports season. Initial sponsorship has been confirmed from Pioneer Pole Buildings in Schuylkill Haven, Pa., and VP Racing Fuels. Additional marketing opportunities remain available.

Registration for race cars is now open. Entry forms have been posted online at www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com. The car entry fee is $25 to cover the cost of insurance. Entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The $25 entry fee should be remitted upon entry to the mall for the show.

All entries received prior to January 15 will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gas card. The gas card drawing will take place in the BD Motorsports Media display at Motorsports 2013, to be held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pa., Jan. 18-20, 2013.

The show is open to all types of vehicles: dirt Modifieds, Sportsman, asphalt Modifieds, Late Models, Roadrunners, Street Stocks, ARDC Midgets, Sprint Cars, SpeedSTRs, Micro-Sprints, XCel 600 Modifieds, Slingshots, Quarter Midgets, go-karts and more.

Speedways and sanctioning bodies will be on hand to divulge plans on their upcoming season and distribute schedules and information. Space can be reserved by contacting Brett Deyo at 845.728.2781 or Deyo99H@aol.com.
Rich Tobias and Doug Rose, the new promoters of USAC Action Track USA (formerly the Kutztown Fairgrounds Speedway) will assemble a vast display to outline their plans at the show. The speedway is set to host weekly Wednesday racing for SpeedSTRs, wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints, 270cc Micro-Sprints and Slingshots.

Of course, there will be a robust display of Vintage and Restored Cars providing a glimpse into auto racing's past. The Reading Fairgrounds Racing Historical Society will coordinate its annual display to remember racing at the Reading Fairgrounds.

The annual Reading Fairgrounds Speedway Reunion is planned for Friday evening March 1. This year, the Friday festivities will be joined by recognition of current-day car owners.

Drivers from the past, present and future will be available for autographs during the anticipated event. There will be driver interviews and other activities on stage in the mall's Center Court.

Vendors will be on hand at the show with collectibles and other novelties on sale. There will be show apparel and a program book available during the week.

Show awards - highlighted by the fourth presentation of the Don Marks Memorial Contribution to Motorsports Award - will be handed out at the BASH Racing Awards Party on Friday, March 1. There will be divisional awards and an overall, fan-voted, Best of Show handed out at the BASH. Details of the BASH will be released in the near future.

The Don Marks Memorial Contribution to Motorsports Award was first handed out in 2010 to honor the memory of late Grandview Speedway and Area Auto Racing News photographer Marks, who passed away in 2008. Previous award recipients include Bob Greene of Pioneer Pole Buildings (2012), car owner, fabricator and former racer Dennis ‘Chico’ Bailey (2011) and Area Auto Racing News publisher/promoter Len Sammons (2010).

Mall hours are Sunday (11 a.m.-5 p.m.) and Monday-Saturday (10 a.m.-9 p.m.). Show set-up begins on Saturday, Feb. 23 (after mall hours) and cars must be removed from the mall on Saturday, March 2 (after mall hours).

Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media is in the late stages of a five-year agreement to purchase the Racing Legends Reunion & Car Show from founders Bob and Donna Miller. The Millers annually promote the NAPA Auto Parts Dirt Track Heroes Car Show at the Phillipsburg Mall in Phillipsburg, N.J. The 2013 dates will be announced shortly for that growing event.

  1. I think such kinds of car shows are best to attend especially of you are true racing lovers. The best part of this show is that you will not come across to the cars of the era but also to the drivers of past, which is still a great source of inspiration for many.
