Field Shaping Up As
Fifth Anniversary VP Racing Fuels-Pioneer Pole Buildings Short Track
SuperNationals At Five Mile Point Speedway Oct. 6 Nears; Bonuses & Awards
Top $10,000!
KIRKWOOD, NY - Five Mile Point Speedway
is set to light up with the fifth edition of the Short Track SuperNationals
presented by VP Racing Fuels and Pioneer Pole
Buildings.
The event - set for Fri.-Sat. Oct
5-6 at the historic Kirkwood, N.Y., oval - will be the most lucrative ever for
big-block/small-block Modified racers. The starting money has been increased to
$455 for the 50-lap feature and more than $10,000 in lap money, bonus cash and
additional awards have been collected for the 'Working Man's Race' of 2012
promoted by Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media.
All racing takes place on Saturday
(Oct. 6) with open practice on Friday night (Oct. 5).
The winner's share for the event is
$5,000 thanks to the Alpine Building Supply 'Roll the Dice Challenge' promotion.
However, countless competitors will benefit from the bonus program which rewards
the winner down to teams unable to qualify for the main event. The
SuperNationals is far from a 'top-heavy' event!
A complete list of special awards -
including tributes to late speed shop owner Ed Tauschman and veteran racer Tom
Hager, who passed away in June - can be found on the BD Motorsports Media
website at www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com.
The Modified field is shaping up to
be talented and diverse. Bobby Varin of Sharon Springs, N.Y., a multi-time Fonda
(N.Y.) Speedway champion, has announced he will be on hand in the Tom
Umbenhauer-owned No. 19. Varin drove Umbenhauer's Bicknell to a charging
runner-up finish in the recent BPG Racing Freedom 76 at Pa.'s Grandview
Speedway.
Billy Pauch Sr., the Frenchtown,
N.J., icon who finished third in the SuperNationals last year, will compete in
search of his first Five Mile Point checkered with the Glenn and Bonita
Hyneman-backed Keystone Racing No. 126. Pauch's rival and fellow New Egypt
(N.J.) Speedway regular Ryan Godown of Ringoes, N.J., returns to the event after
a year away with John Chemidlin's No. 747 small-block.
Mike Mahaney enjoyed a
career-making win at Fonda Speedway on Sept. 23 when he earned $12,000 in the
track's 60th Anniversary 112-lap special. The Kings Ferry, N.Y., 23-year-old
driver hopes to keep his momentum rolling at the SuperNationals driving the Ed
Nowotarski No. 11.
Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., won the
SuperNationals one year ago driving for Mike Petruska. He returns to the seat of
the Atlas Paving No. 66 this year hoping to be the race's first repeat winner.
Jeff Strunk of Bechtelsville, Pa., the $50,000 Grandview Freedom 76
winner, would like to improve on his 24th-to-fourth drive of one year ago with
Norm Hansell's No. 357.
All four previous winners are
expected to participate including Howard, 2012 Five Mile Point champion Justin
Holland of Kauneonga Lake, N.Y., Grandview Forrest Rogers Memorial victor Kevin
Hirthler of Boyertown, Pa., and short-tracker Mike Ricci of Rosendale,
N.Y.
Southern Tier veterans Brian Weaver
of Windsor, N.Y., and Mitch Gibbs of North Norwich, N.Y., will be in the
mix. Gibbs was the I-88 (N.Y.) Speedway
champion in 2012 and Weaver leads the BRP Modified Tour standings in Western
Pennsylvania.
A qualified contingent of talented
drivers is set to do battle including young Sammy Piazza of Lawrenceville, N.J.,
Penn Can (Pa.) champion Joey Grammes of Kunkletown, Pa., Kevin Hartnett of Troy,
Pa., Big Diamond (Pa.) Coalcracker 72 winner Doug Manmiller of Shoemakersville,
Pa., Accord (N.Y.) and Five Mile Point points runner-up Danny Creeden of
Middletown, N.Y., last year's second-place finisher Danny Tyler of Cottekill,
N.Y., and more.
At the Short Track SuperNationals,
it is anybody's race! Early entries can be viewed by visiting www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com.
