LAUBACH PICKS UP BACK TO BACK SEASON OPENERS AT BIG
DIAMOND SPEEDWAY
Win Earns Laubach Guaranteed Spot in SuperNationals
Rick Laubach has started a
tradition.
For the second year in a row, Laubach has
walked away with the winner’s share of the purse on opening day at the Big
Diamond Speedway. After the season opener was a wash out the week before,
beautiful sunny but breezy conditions prevailed for the special Easter Day show,
celebrating Big Diamond’s 40th season of competition.
Laubach’s win netted the driver and owners of
the Benton Electric #7 a $4,000 payday. In addition to his winnings, Laubach’s
win also earned him a guaranteed starting berth in the Short Track
SuperNationals in October.
The special Easter Extravaganza was a
non-point event at the Big Diamond Speedway, run under RoC type rules. Starting
positions for the forty lap feature event were determined by luck of the draw
with Gary Hager and Laubach leading the field to the green. Laubach wasted no
time in taking control of the lead and was never seriously challenged throughout
the event as he led flag to flag for his first victory of the 2012 season.
Gary Hager ran a strong second, holding off
several advances by Ryan Godown in the Clay Realty #88c. Godown crossed the
line in third, just ahead of Jeff Strunk in the Norm Hansell #357 as Strunk made
a late race charge for position. Billy Pauch Sr. finished fifth after going
wide while attempting to make a pass by Godown for third.
A multi-car pile-up on lap eight of the race
brought out the red flag as all but the front runners were involved in the
homestretch incident. Most competitors were able to pit for repairs and return
to the rear of the field. The cars of Danny Hieber, Duane Howard and Billy
Pauch Jr. were the most severely damaged and were done for the day.
Brad Brightbill picked up the win in the
twenty lap Sportsman feature event after starting from the pole position.
Kaitie McCardle challenged Brightbill for the lead at the start of the race but
settled into second where she held off former track champion, Craig Whitmoyer
who finished third. Tim Fitzpatrick finished fourth ahead of Ryan Watt to
complete the top five.
Jim Kost and his Brick House #126 was the
winner of the Roadrunner feature event after fighting off the repeated
challenges of Elvin Brennan III. Shoe Elk finished third followed by rookies
Jesse Krasnitsky and Dave Long Jr.
Notes - Craig VonDohren was able to rebound from two
incidents in the first ten laps of the race to finish sixth. Kevin Albert Jr
had a top ten finish evaporate when he ran out of fuel with three laps to go.
Kyle Weiss ran Craig Whitmoyer’s #99 in the Modified competition while Ryan Watt
returned to compete in a second Kevin Beach #17x. Gary Wagner did double duty,
competing in both the Modified and Sportsman events, finishing in the top ten in
both.
