NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY HIGHLIGHTS 5TH ANNUAL NAPA AUTO PARTS DIRT TRACK HEROES SHOW AT PHILLIPSBURG MALL, EVENT CONTINUES THROUGH SATURDAY, MARCH 10
The 5th Annual NAPA Auto Parts sponsored Dirt Track Heroes Show in Phillipsburg, New Jersey moved past the mid-point of the week long show on Wednesday evening as the fourth day of the show highlighted the New Egypt Speedway. After an opening introduction to begin the evening with NAPA Representative Patrick Imhoff, who talked about the on-going NAPA coloring contest at the show that will see the winners of the contest being named on Saturday afternoon, the week ongoing specials at all of the five stores in the local group and the tremendous amount of exposure the stores have gained with their presence at the show.
The interviews began with Billy "The Kid" Pauch as the New Jersey racing legend with more than 675 wins in his storied career talked about his Modified Championship at New Egypt and his plans for returning to the speedway to defend the crown in 2012. Billy talked about some of the new rule changes at New Egypt and what he had to do to have his cars conform to the rules in place at the speedway. Billy indicated he would compete at additional venues but was undecided at just how many additional events were on his schedule. Frank Cozze Jr, who is currently without a ride for the new season, talked about just how difficult it was to field his own deal in racing, and decided to sell his team and hoped that a quality ride would surface so he can continue in his love for racing.
Crate Sportsman Bryan Kuhl talked about his 2011 season in which he led the points chase up until the final two weeks of the season only to see some problems eraser his lead and eventually saw him finish in the runner-up role. Kuhl added he will return to the speedway in hopes of making another run for the title in 2012. Mike Hendershot, a quality Modified racer in his own right, stated he would step back into the Sportsman division for the 2012 season citing the lack of time and money to continue on with the Modifieds and felt the free time would have him spending more time with his family. Ryan Simmons talked of his plans for the new season ahead and while wanting to move up to the Modifieds in the future, will remain with the Sportsman again due to budget restraints on his wallet.
Matt Carman talked about his step into the full-size cars for the new season ahead after sending some time with the Xcell 600 Modifieds. Matt will be a rookie at New Egypt and with his family behind him, will be up to speed in no time flat. Billy Pauch Jr gave another candid interview and talked about the many different divisions he will be racing in 2012 as he takes over the Petruska 66 Modified and informed the crowd of his own Big Block car and will also compete in select 358 Sprint car shows and will do some turns in the Burke Midget as well. The talented third generation wheelman has show he is equally adept at any type of racing equipment he steers. Ray Liss talked about his racing days and the fact he built 34 race cars in his lifetime and one of them is gracing the Flemington Speedway Historical Society display at the Mall. Wall Stadium Announcer Earl Krause was on hand and talked about the rebirth of Wall Stadium and the new three year lease Promoter Cliff Krause recently signed for the new season ahead. Earl talked about the presence of the many vintage race cars in the show and how that portion of any Mall Show remains among his priorities when he walks the aisles of the cars being displayed.
Thursday evening is Hamlin, Accord, Orange County, Big Diamond and the Stage One Modified drivers taking center stage with the nightly interviews on a evening that is sponsored by Smith Fabrications/Stage One Modifieds/ Hamlin Speedway and S&S Speedway Indoor Go Karts. Sonny Croughn's DARE 2B BAD 1,000 horsepower Trikester is part of the show as Sonny celebrates 50 years in the racing industry. The Legends Showcase will be presented on Friday March 9th and headlining the showcase will be racing greats Bill Wimble and Freddy Adam and both will be selling and signing copies of their books. Wimble's Book, "I'll Never Be Last Again" tells Bill's story of a dairy farmer who desired to race and after finishing last in his very first event vowed to never be last again and he never was. The book is great reading as it captures the fact there is more to life than just racing and Wimble describes it his way in the very popular book along with Lew Boyd. Adam is an integral part of the Reading Fairgrounds Racing Historical Society and attends as many events as possible and his book, "The Life And Times Of The Kutztown Komet" is another great read as Freddy tell his story to Paul Weisel.
