Lias Tire/American Racer Sign On for 2012 'Road to the SuperNationals' Series of Qualifiers; "Working Man's Race" Celebrates Fifth Anniversary
KIRKWOOD, NY - The 'Road to the Short Track SuperNationals' runs through three states - New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania - in 2012.
Launched in 2006 at N.Y.'s Afton Speedway, the Short Track SuperNationals was devised as a year-end spotlight event for the weekend racer: a race offering a lucrative purse that a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night racer could attain.
After five years - now hosted at historic Five Mile Point Speedway - the Short Track SuperNationals remains "The Working Man's Race" of dirt Modified racing.
The 2012 Short Track SuperNationals - the fifth anniversary edition sponsored by Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc., Alpine Building & Post Supply and VP Racing Fuels - is slated for Fri.-Sat. Oct. 5-6, 2012. The SuperNationals is headlined by a 50-lap big-block/small-block Modified main. All racing is held on Saturday (Oct. 6), with an open practice set for Friday (Oct. 5).
To celebrate year five of the SuperNationals, Lias Tire of Indiana, Pa., the regional American Racer tire distributor, has teamed with event promoter Brett Deyo and speedway operators throughout the region to present the American Racer 'Road to the SuperNationals.'
The American Racer 'Road to the SuperNationals' is comprised of qualifiers held at a number of facilities utilizing American Racer tires throughout the Northeast. The winner of each event becomes a guaranteed starter in the Columbus Day weekend Short Track SuperNationals feature event.
As has been the case in recent SuperNationals runnings, guaranteed starters will not take away from the field of cars to qualify on race day.
"We are aware of the outstanding car counts this event has pulled over the last few years," said Fred Woodward of Lias Tire. "It's definitely an event we, at American Racer, want to be a part of."
Event promoter Deyo sees the benefits of the 'Road to the SuperNationals.'
"As this event turns five years old, these qualifiers will allow us to give back to the racers and speedways who have been helpful in building the Short Track SuperNationals," Deyo said.
"It's a win-win-win for American Racer/Lias Tire, the SuperNationals and the participating tracks. And having a guaranteed spot is a huge bonus for a race team. Last year, Billy Pauch Jr. borrowed a car, took his guaranteed starting position and charged from 32nd to finish sixth!"
The American Racer 'Road to the SuperNationals' kicks off on Fri., March 16 at Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway during the Race of Champions 'Icebreaker V' weekend. The 358-Mod winner at the Joe Kaminski-organized event earns the SuperNationals spot.
The 'Road to the SuperNationals' heads "home" on Fri., Aug. 10 with a visit to I-88 Speedway in Afton, N.Y., the birthplace of the event. Ron Ford and Jamie Page now successfully operate the Afton facility, which will boast a new clay surface for the upcoming season.
The Rogers family's Grandview (Pa.) Speedway - celebrating its 50th anniversary season - hosts a SuperNationals qualifier for the first time on Sat., July 21.
The 'Road to the SuperNationals' visits Gene Cole's showplace Utica-Rome (N.Y.) Speedway on Thurs., July 12, providing Central New York teams with an opportunity for a guaranteed Short Track SuperNationals spot.
South Jersey's Bridgeport Speedway, under the leadership of Doug and Gena Hoffman, is another new track on the list of qualifiers. The 'Road to the SuperNationals' heads to the five-eighths-mile oval on Sat., Aug. 4.
Facilities returning to host qualifiers this season are Big Diamond (Pa.) Speedway on Sun., April 8, Five Mile Point on Mon., July 2, New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway Sat., July 7, Penn Can (Pa.) Speedway Fri., Aug. 24 and Accord (N.Y.) Speedway Fri., Sept. 14.
Deyo and Lias Tire will work to spotlight each event on the 'Road to the SuperNationals' providing additional publicity for the participating speedways.
In its four-year existence, the SuperNationals has gained a reputation as a racer- and fan-friendly event. A healthy purse and open rules package annually attracts a diverse cross-section of talented weekend racers to do battle at the wide and racy quarter-mile oval.
Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., was the '11 Short Track SuperNationals winner driving for Mike Petruska in the Atlas Paving No. 66. Previous victors were Justin Holland (2010), Kevin Hirthler (2009) and Mike Ricci at Afton (2006).
