ARCA DAYTONA POLE SITTER SEAN CORR HEADLINES SECOND DAY OF 5TH ANNUAL NAPA AUTO PARTS DIRT TRACK HEROES SHOW AT PHILLIPSBURG MALL, SHOW RUNS THROUGH MARCH 10
After a rousing opening debut on Sunday, the 5th Annual NAPA Auto Parts sponsored Dirt Track Heroes Show at the Phillipsburg Mall in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, rolled into the second day with a look at some of the small division raceways in the local area and a personal appearance from ARCA Racing Series driving star Sean Corr who is heading to North Carolina to be fitted to a recently completed race car and then heading to Alabama to compete this weekend in the ARCA Series events. Corr gained much attention recently when he sat on the pole for the ARCA Daytona 200-mlie race and explained to the crowd on hand what it was like to sit on the pole for the event and lead the first 23-laps of the event before engine troubles in his Empire Racing sponsored race car became terminal and ended his great run at Daytona. Undaunted, the team headed up by Crew Chief Ben Leslie and Team Manager John Bellesfield, will roll into Alabama brimming with confidence in knowing they have a race car capable of running up front and winning in the popular racing series. Corr enjoyed a great season in 2011 as he vaulted into the top ten with a ninth place finish in the final ARCA points and enjoyed great runs all season long in his Empire Racing Ford race car as he completed all 19 races on the ARCA Schedule. Corr, a resident of Goshen, New York, has many local ties to the area and is a past champion at the Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York. In his interview at the show he thanked all of the people who have assisted him in living the dream and thanked everyone for their support in his racing efforts. The Grandview Speedway 50th Anniversary modified and the Billy Pauch #15 Pennsylvania modified sit side-by-side at the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series booth and both cars are getting much attention.
Bob Marlow, whose father built the famous Pinebrook Stadium for Three Quarter Midget racing and is a well noted announcer in his own right, provided insight to the great history of the speedway and his continued tie-in with racing as the announcer at the indoor events in Atlantic city, New Jersey and Providence, Rhode Island. ATQMRA champion Ryan Tidman was on hand to about his championship season in 2011 and talked about what it will take to defend the crown in 2012. Fellow combatants and close friends Jeff Kot and Matt Roselli interviewed and shared their thoughts about the traveling series and the support they will be throwing towards Borger's Speedway on their non-tour dates. "The Communicator" Matthew Gaughan was on hand to talk about his rookie season in the Legends race cars that saw him finish 14th in points at Bethel Motor Speedway on pavement and earned a ninth place ranking nationally in Legends dirt points. Borger's 600 Micro champion "The Conductor" Bobby Butler was on hand to talk about his consecutive championship titles in 2010 at Hamlin and 2011 at Borgers and still a bit undecided if he will be a regular at any one speedway in 2012. "The Abbey-nator" Abbey Price was on hand to talk about her transition into the Xcel Modified division for the new season ahead and Chloe Andres interviewed and talked about her plans for this season with regular duty at the Shellhamers Speedway.
Driving Talent JR Fulper talked about his plans with his Slingshot racing this season as he continues to raise the bar each season with his racing activities. "Slick" Rick Raisner talked of his plans for the new season as moves into the future with the Borger's Speedway and noted he has never driven on a pavement surface but is looking forward to the challenge. Bob Snyder, the photographer and co-promoter at Borger's talked about the transition of the speedway into the pavement era from dirt and the many changes that have taken place at the speedway in the off-season. Barry Greenzweig has taken over the duties as promoter at the Snydersville Raceway for the new season and will continue his promotion of the Kart Racing facility at Oreville and hopes to gain momentum at Snydersville even though he is getting a late start with the recent transition. Russ Meyer, who captured his first ever feature win in 1950 at the Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey, joined in with a great interview to talk about his strictly stock days and later becoming the 1976 Sportsman Champion at the Orange County Fair Speedway driving the Hawthorne Chevrolet car. Likewise did Barry Suydam as he talked about the many race tracks he competed at and gave some hair-raising tails of some of his exciting moments while in competition. Stan "The Man" Friedman chatted about some of his great moments in racing with a couple of championships in recent years at Borgers and noted he is still trying to figure out how he put his Modified on its nose at Nazareth National back in 1982.
Additional highlights for the week long celebration of racing is the special guest appearance of "The Warrior" Chris Carr on March 6th, as the seven time AMA Flat Track Champion and former world land speed for motorcycles will sign autographs and talk about his recent retirement from active competition at the end of the 2011. Carr, in a remarkable racing career, competed in excess of 400 main events and captured 78 wins along the way after turning pro back in 1983. Carr captured his first crown in 1992 and followed up with a title in 1999 and added five consecutive titles from 2001 through 2005. Carr stepped away from the flat tracks for a couple of seasons to try his hand at road racing bikes and had the same amount of success that earned him induction into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2004. Carr is also a seven time AMA 600cc Dirt Track title holder and the 2000 Formula USA Dirt Track Champion.
The NAPA Auto Parts Dirt Track Heroes Car Show will again offer a great keepsake event souvenir program book and shirt. The Phillipsburg Mall is open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 9 PM.
