Pavement Greats Tony And Matt Hirschman Sign On To Kick-Off 5TH Annual NAPA Auto Parts Dirt Track Heroes Show
The countdown for the upcoming and highly anticipated 5th Annual NAPA Auto Parts sponsored Dirt Track Heroes Show continues on and with each passing day leading up the show's opening on Sunday, March 4th, at the Phillipsburg Mall in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, additional integral pieces of the show develop for the racing fans. There is a full array of driving stars who have already signed on for the week long run of the show just waiting to meet their adoring racing fans and the latest signing his two of the best pavement stars in Modified racing joining in with the celebration for racers of the past, present and future in the world of motorsports. Five time Whelen Modified Tour Champion Tony Hirschman and his son Matt, himself a four time champion on the ROC Pavement Tour, will be among the star studded line-up of racing stars converging at the Phillipsburg Mall for the week long celebration of motorsports. With the recent announcement of the Legends Showcase rolling into the Mall on Friday, March 9th, featuring legendary racing greats Bill Wimble and Freddy Adam and a host of equally as gifted owners and drivers joining them for the 4 PM Friday special edition and seven time AMA Pro Grand National Champion and former world land speed record holder for Motorcycles Chris Carr making a special appearance on March 6th, the five year old showcase Mall show keeps adding the polish and the luster with the latest signings.
Tony Hirschman began his racing career at the Dorney Park Speedway in Allentown, Pennsylvania and quickly moved through the ranks of the racing world by capturing two championships at the Mahoning Valley Speedway in 1977-1978 and two titles at the Mountain Speedway in 1978-1980. Moving into the Whelen Modified Tour ranks, Tony earned his first series title in 1995 and captured additional series titles in 1996, 1999, 2004 and 2005. Tony captured ROC titles in 1989 and 1997 and has won numerous awards for his great performances on the race track. While only competing in occasional races currently, Tony still shows the moxie and the necessary talent to get the job done on the race track as evidenced by his second place run in 2011 at the ROC Race of Champions event at Oswego Speedway. In 2003 Tony was named as one of the top NASCAR Modified drivers of all-time earning the number six slot on the list of driving greats. Tony earned Rookie of the Year honors in the Busch East Series in 1992 and captured the Richie Evans Performance award in 1996. Matt Hirschman followed in his Dad's footsteps and quickly earned high marks for his prowess on the race track and just as his father did, Matt has driven with extreme patience and style as his Dad and never the abuses the racing equipment he goes to the speedway with. Matt is a four time ROC Modified Series Champion having captured titles in 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Matt has captured the North-South Shoot-Out event four times, captured the King of the Mountain at Mountain Speedway in 2011 and became the Concrete King with his win at the new Shangri-La Speedway in July. Matt has been off and on the Whelen Modified Circuit in recent seasons but returned in 2011 to earn a solid sixth place finish at the end of the season driving the famed Boehler car. Matt scored a third place finish on the tour in 2007 and came back to finish runner-up in 2008. Mattalso competed in a couple of K&N Series races with 4th and 6th place performances running for Evernham-Gillette.
Additional highlights for the week long celebration of racing is the special guest appearance of "The Warrior" Chris Carr as the seven time AMA Flat Track Champion and former world land speed for motorcycles will sign autographs and talk about his recent retirement from active competition at the end of the 2011. Carr, in a remarkable racing career, competed in excess of 400 main events and captured 78 wins along the way after turning pro back in 1983. Carr captured his first crown in 1992 and followed up with a title in 1999 and added five consecutive titles from 2001 through 2005. Carr stepped away from the flat tracks for a couple of seasons to try his hand at road racing bikes and had the same amount of success that earned him induction into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2004. Carr is also a seven time AMA 600cc Dirt Track title holder and the 2000 Formula USA Dirt Track Champion.
The legendary "King of the East Coast Customizers", Sonny Croughn, will have on display throughout the week the latest piece of ingenuity out of the Croughn shop. Dubbed the "Baddest Trike in the Country" the seventeen-foot long three-wheeled custom creation powered by a raw 454 cubic inch Big Block Chevy 1,0000 horsepowered motor will grace center court when the Mall doors swing open to the public on March 4th. Eye-catching and a premier work of fabrication genius, the DARE 2B Bad Trikester was first revealed in 2008 and has captured many awards since it was first unveiled to the public. Croughn, who is celebrating 50 years in the world of show stopping customized creations, has captured more than 170 awards in his long-standing and successful career and has constantly taken the road less traveled to go beyond the curve to raise the bar with his sensational masterpieces of the show world. Croughn's Shop is located in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania with a phone number to reach him at: 570 698 0203 and the website for valuable information is: www.croughnsautostyling.com
The Legends Showcase will be presented on Friday March 9th and headlining the showcase will be the great Bill Wimble. Wimble resided in upstate New York and where his journey in racing began. After close to twenty years and 250 wins behind the wheel of a race car, Wimble retired from the sport in 1968 after a horrific accident at the Lebanon Valley Speedway where he was crowned the speedway champion with more than a month remaining in the season. Wimble on to become a very successful businessman and owned more than 25 businesses in his very successful foray into the business world. Wimble was a 14-time track champion at eight different speedways with five of those titles coming at the famous Fonda Fairgrounds. Wimble captured wins at many of the speedways of the day and although he belonged to the NASCAR organization, traveled into the Lehigh Valley area to race at Harmony, Reading, Nazareth, Flemington and Nazareth National Speedways and made his presence well known at every speedway in which he competed. Wimble was the NASCAR Sportsman Champion in consecutive seasons in both 1960 and 1961, was the New York State champion on five occasions and was the Connecticut State champion twice. Wimble's Book, "I'll Never Be Last Again" tells Bill's story of a dairy farmer who desired to race and after finishing last in his very first event vowed to never be last again and he never was. The book is great reading as it captures the fact there is more to life than just racing and Wimble describes it his way in the very popular book along with Lew Boyd. Freddy Adam is without question one of the most popular drivers to ever steer a race car in the local area. The name Adam and the Reading Speedway were synonymous with great race track lore. Adam captured the prestigious National Open at Langhorne in 1964 and was victorious at the Nazareth National Speedway as well. Adam carved out a special niche with his many fans in racing as he was always approachable for an autograph or to chat about his latest racing endeavors. Adam was a past champion at the old Hatfield Speedway and was a 20-time career winner at the "Home of Champions" the Reading Fairgrounds. Adam is an integral part of the Reading Fairgrounds Racing Historical Society and attends as many events as possible and his book, "The Life And Times Of The Kutztown Komet" is another great read as Freddy tell his story to Paul Weisel.

The "Golden Era" of auto racing from the late fifties through the early eighties was an era that saw many changes take place in the way the race cars were constructed. The word "stock" gave way to ingenuity at first and followed closely by technology as the race cars became less stock appearing and relied more heavily on the latest speed part that would make the race car go faster. While the years have changed the look and the cost of racing, the spirit of the competition remains much as it was when racing in the local area was launched. The great fan base of racing can come out to this grand Mall event and be transported back to a time when they could hop into their family jitney and travel less than a half hour to witness the excitement of a night at the races. All historical racing groups including Reading, Flemington, Harmony, Dorney Park and Nazareth will have their memorabilia on display and their many scrapbooks open for the fans to take another long look at the glory years of racing and possibly find a picture or two they want to purchase as a keepsake from past glory or racing exploits.

The week-long event will set aside one evening to salute the "Stars of Tomorrow" with a special night set aside for the budding young racing talents competing with the many quarter midget clubs in the area and this night has proven to be one of the highlights of the week as many will be giving their first ever interviews to a sizable crowd.
