RISLONE URC SPRINT SERIES
RANDY WEST LOOKS TO EARN FRED KENNEDY A LONG OVER DUE URC OWNER CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
Forty-three year old Randy West of Boyertown, PA has been around the block more then a few times. He understands racing as its' been a big part of his life, day after day.
West enjoyed success in the sports at various levels and coming off the 2011 Rislone URC Sprint Series, it was certainly one of his best seasons. Driving for respected car owner Fred Kennedy, this is a rather dynamic team and watching them interact, along with their team, you sense a feeling of calm, serious and, the competitive drive to win. What's more remarkable is, when the night doesn't unfold quite the way they planned, the team laughs and still has a good time, shaking it off with a plan to. . ."we'll get'em next week". "Fred and I only go to the races to have fun. If you spend that kind of time and that much money, at the end of most nights, you better have a smile on your face", added West.
Fred Kennedy, a successful former stock car and sprint driver himself, does a lot for the sport. His sponsorship contributions to various race teams, support of different divisions and URC is noticeable. Beyond the financial piece, Fred Kennedy often provides the voice of reason to work though what could be possible challenging situations. Fred knows what it takes to be in all the various roles from driver, owner, crew member and even a race official. He has done it all and brings that knowledge and experience to every discussion.
In 2012, Randy West would like nothing more then to bring home the URC Owner Championship for Fred Kennedy.
"Our season last year went real well and seemed to slip a little at the end, when we started using a different car", said West. "We just could not find the right set-up in that car to make me comfortable". In the course of the 2011 Rislone Sprint Series, Randy West was a two time feature winner, taking victories at the Georgetown Speedway on July 1 and the Delaware International on July 30. West closed out the year with a fourth place finish in the overall Rislone Championship Series point chase, a career high accomplishment. West and Kennedy also won the Taylor & Messick Delaware State Sprint Series, a mini-point series within the season long Rislone title run.
Randy and Fred appreciate their crew, without them, racing at this level would just not be possible. The crew includes Randy Wilbert, John Griffiths, Alonzo Morales, Jenn West and Randy's biggest fan, his son Cody West. The list of sponsors includes Fred's Trailer Parts, Mini-Crete, Delran Auto Body, West Fabrication, Simpson, Rod End Supply, Winters, The Brake Man, Robinson Racing Products and Keizer Wheels. For 2012, the West/Kennedy Team has an arsenal of three 360 motors now being freshened by Yardley Racing Engine, Speed Equipment, and Ayers Racing Engines. The motors will get dropped into two J&J chassis and they'll be set for the coming year.
Why is it so hard for a driver to score multiple wins in URC? "The competition in URC is second to none. Even though car count is down from previous years, the good cars are still racing weekly. Drivers with multiple wins, are usually racing weekly at the same track, we really don't race at any one track enough times for someone to be dominant. You also have to look at percentages, the drivers that are winning a lot are also racing a lot more then most of the URC drivers. What I would like to see is a 360/358 Challenge race at Delaware International and I'm sure the outcome would be that the URC drivers would dominate", stated West.
"I think it would be great if the #56 or the #89 sprint car could give Fred Kennedy his first, long overdue URC Owner Championship. He has been a great car owner, sponsor, and supporter of URC for many non-stop years". West continued to say, "When I first ran URC in 2003, I viewed Fred's car as one that I wanted to drive before I quit driving, and I find it an honor to now be in my fourth year of driving for Fred, it can't get much better then this".
The 2012 URC opener is set for the Delaware International Speedway on Saturday, April 14.
