2011 Was A Defining Season for BD Motorsports Media Promotions - Set Industry Standard for Dirt Modified Car Counts As Special Events Promotion Leader
BOYERTOWN, PA - A defining season.
The 2011 campaign confirmed BD Motorsports Media as the industry leader in dirt Modified special events promotion. The statistics tell the tale.
BD Motorsports Media boasted the highest-single day event dirt Modified car count over the course of the year at any facility at Five Mile Point (N.Y.) Speedway on Oct. 8 with a pit-bulging 79 Modifieds signing in for the 'Working Man's Race' Short Track SuperNationals.
On June 7, the 'Clash at the Can' $8,000-to-win event at Penn Can (Pa.) Speedway, a field of 66 Modifieds signed in for action - the highest midweek race car count of 2011.
"We're very proud of what we accomplished in '11," said special events promoter Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media. "Regardless of track, sanction, or series, we led the way for single-day events and midweek promotions this year, which is phenomenal for our limited budget effort.
"It shows that the heart of Modified racing remains with the short-track, weekend warrior. Those Friday, Saturday or Sunday night racers who support our events are truly the backbone of the sport. We continue to cater to those drivers who work a full day then put in many more hours in their garage at night."
BD Motorsports Media hosted its first event in Oct. 2006 at N.Y.'s Afton Speedway (now I-88) and has since been involved in the promotion of nine events since the fledgling first effort with Pat and Janet Jordan, then promoters of Afton.
Headline sponsors of the '11 BD Motorsports Media campaign were Pioneer Pole Buildings of Schuylkill Haven, Pa., and world renowned VP Racing Fuels.
"Bob Greene of Pioneer Pole Buildings (and Alpine Building & Post Supply) took a chance on us in 2009 when the return of the Short Track SuperNationals and has remained on board ever since. Bob is a true asset to the sport in many capacities," Deyo, 28, a New York transplant how now lives in Boyertown, Pa., said.
"The name VP Racing Fuels speaks for itself. VP is the world leader and it was honor to work with such a major player not only in the Northeast racing community, but around the world through the VP and Small Engine Fuels (SEF) brands."
The success of 2011 could not have been achieved without the support of contingency and special award sponsors.
"We always work hard to obtain special award sponsors for our racers," said Deyo. "The support of people like Don Biegley (S&D Bodyline), Jason Bashore (BFP Specialty), Gary Shiley (Shiley Fabrication), Doug and Colleen Manmiller (Manmiller Electric), Joe Kaminski (Selinsgrove Speedway) Fred Woodward (Lias Tire/American Racer), Bob Hilbert (Bob Hilbert Sportswear), Scott Lyon (S&W Awards), Jason Vogel (Vogel Race Designs), Dale Smith (Dale Smith Photography) and so many more, some who even like to remain anonymous, helps our program thrive.
"Believe me when I say every lap sponsor, special award sponsor or contingency sponsors appreciated greatly! I hear from the race teams repeatedly how much they appreciate the added perks and bonuses they receive at our events."
The Short Track SuperNationals at Five Mile Point Speedway remains the signature BD Motorsports Media event. Run as the weekend racer's option on Columbus Day weekend, the 50-lap event attracts one of the most diverse fields of hardcore, short-track dirt Modified racers each October.
Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., a Grandview (Pa.) Speedway regular, drove the Mike Petruska-owned No. 66 to victory in the fourth SuperNationals running over youngster Danny Tyler, New Jersey star Billy Pauch Sr., Pennsylvania's Jeff Strunk and Jeff Heotzler of southeastern New York notoriety.
A star of the '11 SuperNationals was Billy Pauch Jr., who lost an engine on his No. T102 in qualifying, picked up a last-minute ride in the Harvey Bitler No. 88D after Meme DeSantis failed to make the main event and charged from 32nd starting position to finish sixth despite a flat tire mid-race.
An emerging season highlight for fans in the Southern Tier area is the 'Clash at the Can' at Penn Can Speedway, run for the second time in '11. With 66 Modifieds in the pit area, Billy Decker of Unadilla, N.Y., took home more than $8,000 for his victory over Tyler, Central New York's Jimmy Phelps, Howard and two-time Mr. DIRTcar Modified Matt Sheppard.
Wet weather forced the 'King of the Can' at Penn Can to be postponed twice and run very late in the season - Sunday, Nov. 13! However, race fans were rewarded with autumn excitement. Marching forward from 12th position, Stewart Friesen used a restart with two laps remaining to pull off a slide job of Jeff Strunk to put the Tadd Parks No. 1 in Victory Lane. An agitated Strunk was second, followed by Pat Ward, Phelps and 22nd-starting Justin Holland.
BD Motorsports Media held its first event at Big Diamond (Pa.) Speedway on July 26 (postponed by rain from June 22) with the RoC-sanctioned 'Anthracite Assault' 60-lapper. It marked the return of RoC to Coal Country for the first time since 2006.
Friesen, of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., was the victor, holding off a mid-race advance by Jimmy Horton (who suffered a flat tire) and late charges from Ryan Godown and runner-up Howard. Superstar Brett Hearn was third, followed by Godown and Danny Johnson. Savage L&B Dodge Chrysler Jeep was a first-time sponsor of BD Media at Big Diamond.
The 28-year-old Friesen has won three of nine BD-promoted events.
Two of the four BD Motorsports events of '11 paid $300 to take the green in an attempt to reward 'little guy' racers with some additional cash. The 'Clash at the Can' and 'Anthracite Assault' carried a Race of Champions sanction, while the other two events were independent.
Only one of the scheduled five BD Motorsports Media co-promotions fell to the weather: the Aug. 9 'Hot Summer Night' at Penn Can.
While the accomplishments were plentiful in '11, room for improvement remains.
"We will put a renewed focus on the fans in 2012," Deyo said, adding, "not only with more giveaways and special promotions, but with quicker running programs. We are fully aware that our shows, with the exception of the 'King of the Can' were far too long for the casual fan. That is an area in need of attention for next season. We hope the November event proved we are working to make our programs more efficient."
A contributing factor to the success of BD Motorsports Media events is cooperation and strong relationships with fellow track operators and promoters.
"We've got great working relationships with people like Gary and Donna Palmer at Accord (N.Y.) Speedway, Charlie Cathell at Delaware, John Wight and Cory Reed at Brewerton (N.Y.) and Fulton (N.Y.), Mike Gurda and Mike Sanchelli at Orange County (N.Y.), Gene Cole at Utica-Rome (N.Y.) Joe Kaminski and Charlie Paige at Selinsgrove, the Roehrigs at Big Diamond, Danny Serrano at New Egypt (N.J.) and so many more," Deyo said.
"Working together with other facilities is good for the sport."
The core concept of liberal rules allowing as many teams as possible to compete remains in place: gas, methanol, big- or small-block, sail panels or windows, it isn't relevant. Putting on a show with a wide cross-section of race teams is the ultimate goal. Nit-picking on rules is not!
Of course, the host facilities are the backbone of all these events.
"Without people like Andrew Harpell (Five Mile Point and Race of Champions) and Reed Miller and Al Wilcox (Penn Can), we wouldn't be doing this," Deyo said. "They are not only partners in business but have become great friends. We look forward to continuing our mutually beneficial relationships."
BD Motorsports Media has plans for an expansive display at Motorsports 2012 presented by Small Engine Fuels Jan. 20-22 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pa. Last year, BD took home the Best Speedway/Series display at the Len Sammons Motorsports Productions event.
