THUNDER SERIES 2011

THUNDER ON THE HILL COMPLETES 22ND SUCCESSFUL SEASON, THUNDER ROAD SHOWS A HIT IN 2011

It's hard to believe another Thunder on the Hill Racing Series is history.

2011 was destine to be a monumental season as Thunder on the Hill reached its twenty-second season and 100th Thunder Show on June 28. Branching off from the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series are the Thunder Road Shows, similar in nature, by presenting the . . . ."not so similar" shows at different tracks. In 2011 all scheduled Thunder events were presented even against the odds of bad weather. Without a doubt, all the Thunder events were wildly successful.

Looking back at 2011, it was a year of right decisions for both the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series and the Thunder Road Shows. The 100th Thunder event in June was greeted by Mother Nature with rain falling during time trials and the ROC Modified Traffic JAM became a two day show with help from Mother Nature. With all the challenges, the shows did go on.

The Battle at Lincoln Thunder Road Show ran off without a hitch even with a 40% chance of rain and the 410 Sprint Jersey Rush show at New Egypt Speedway, well, that race came off despite a Hurricane, the loss of power at the track, limited phone service and several competitors missing from the field because flooding kept the crew from getting the car out of the garage. On with the show was the motto. . . . . .and yes, it was another successful venture.

It's all part of the job. When you get up in the morning of race day, you want everything to go just right, but some things are just out of your control, like MeMe DeSantis taking down a good portion of the Grandview Speedway homestretch fence during this years' Traffic JAM. And of course, the challenges always presented by Mother Nature.

Never-the-less, the Thunder events beat the odds, scheduling and completing all eight dates. Wow. . . a year without a single cancellation.

The Thunder events are known for being different, certainly not the same old same old. "Bringing a different show to a home track crowd is exciting but risky as well", commented Thunder event's organizer Bob Miller. The NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series is different today than when the series started in 1990. What began as a standalone 410 sprint show, developed into much more. The World of Outlaws Sprints & Late Models soon joined the series along with the California Racing Association (CRA), SCRA and the USAC non-wing sprints rallied behind Thunder on the Hill. The DIRT Modifieds and ROC Modifieds sanctioned the fourteen year history of the Big Block Modified Traffic JAM, a marquee event now at Bruce Roger's exciting one-third mile Grandview Speedway, on "the hill" in Bechtelsville, PA. "Change is a necessity for success", added Miller.

URC Sprints, ARDC Midgets, Late Models, Legends, 358 sprints, sportsman, micro-sprints and even the Monster Smash Demolition Derby have all been part of the twenty-two years and one-hundred and two Thunder on the Hill Racing Series events presented at Grandview Speedway by track owner Bruce Rogers and Bob Miller.

In 2011, the Thunder Road Show was part of three additional successful events as well. First, the Thunder Road Show returned to the New Egypt Speedway for the second consecutive year to bring the USAC non-wings sprints back to New Jersey. The USAC sprint and Big Block Modified double-header was even bigger this year. The USAC sprints returned to New Jersey in 2010 after a thirty-two year hiatus. In early August, Bob Miller along with Ray Herold brought the big block modifieds to Lincoln Speedway. It was twenty-five years since the modifieds hit the "Pigeon Hills" oval and this event, joined by the 358/360 sprints filled the stands. The success of this show was a surprise to many especially those who thought there was little to no interest in the modifieds in central Pennsylvania. This show will be back on the Lincoln Speedway schedule in 2012.

At the end of August, Bob Miller teamed up with the Lenny Sammons and sons Danny and Davey to pull off the 410 Sprint JERSEY RUSH. Again, a different division, missing from the New Egypt Speedway schedule for years, returned to the delight of a huge crowd that saw JJ Grasso win his first ever 410 sprint feature as the master of New Egypt, Billy Pauch took the win in the modified feature in an outrageously successful event.

The 2011 season was a huge success for the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series and Thunder Road Show. Plans are already in the works for the 2012 year which will find the Thunder Series padding its' already lucrative total payoff that now exceeds $3.4 million dollars in one-hundred and two races at Grandview.
