PAUCH AND RUMMEL INCREASE WIN TALLY TO THREE; BENTLEY CAPTURES FIRST NEETS WIN OF SEASON…By Gary Lileck
Bechtelsville, PA – September 25, 2011 – The North East Enduro Tour Series presented race #6, the annual Junk-A-Thon, this past Sunday afternoon at the Grandview Speedway. Tim Pauch of Stockton NJ captured his third Big Car Enduro win of the season while Dave Bentley Sr. of Woodlyn PA grabbed a season’s first Small Car Enduro win in only his second start of the year. Linsey Rummel of Parkerford PA completed the afternoon with her third Ladies Race victory (fifth overall) of 2011.
The 125-lap Big Car race found 33 starters, and pole sitter Shawn Naftzinger took the early race lead. Pat Hires, who started ninth, moved into the top spot on lap 19, but Nafztinger regained command of the position on the 35th lap. The Auburn PA based racer continued to show the way until a major turning point took place on lap 114.
Nafztzinger’s Malibu bodied machine crashed in the middle of the backstretch, bringing out the event’s fourth and final red flag. Pauch, who had started the contest from last-33rd, drove a clean race throughout its entire distance and became the new race leader. Pauch extended his NEETS Series points lead by capturing the victory by a two-lap margin.
Tour regular Jerry Arms (Douglassville PA) started 12th and grabbed a season’s best finish of second. Chuck Eckert (Schuylkill Haven PA) continued his stellar 2011 campaign with a strong third place effort. Jason Brown (Schuylkill Haven PA) was up to second, pitted, and rallied back to a record a fourth place finish. Travis Guyer (Ivyland PA) raced from 17th to fifth, a season’s best result.
The 125-lap Small Car Enduro contained a season high of eight red flag stoppages during its course. Scott Dunn started outside row one and stormed into the early lead. Rob Pyle passed S. Dunn for a single circuit on lap 28. S. Dunn returned the favor on lap 29. After a three-wide battle, Pat Hires (originally started 22nd) moved into the race lead in turn one of lap 48. Dave Bentley Sr. eventually followed into the runner-up spot.
Bentley, the highly accomplished racing veteran, took the lead from Hires on lap 73 and led the remaining distance. Hires (Levittown PA) finished on the same lap in the runner-up spot. Defending champion Phil Levering (Parkerford PA) moved from 12th to third while Justin Dunn (Yardville NJ) turned in a strong fourth place effort, matching his season’s best. Brian Smith (Washington NJ) rounded out the front finishing five.
In the 25-lap Ladies Race, Linsey Rummel drove to the hard fought victory. Jen Schwager (Bechtelsville PA) remained close to the leader until the final lap when her car experienced mechanical issues, however, she was still scored second at the finish. Gale Maxam, making her first start of the season, finished third over Stephanie Reid (Macungie PA) and Katie Todorow (Quakertown PA).
The 2011 points finale for the NEETS Enduro Series takes place on Sunday October 16 at Grandview Speedway. The annual Mutha of all Enduros will consist of a 150-lap Big Car Enduro and a 150-lap contest for the Small Cars, along with the Top 10 Club Challenge race. The green flag drops at 1:00PM.
