Mike Gular Files First Entry For Penn Can Speedway's King of the Can Modified Special Oct. 14; Former Two-Time Champion Looks For Breakthrough High-Profile Victory

SUSQUEHANNA, PA - Former two-time champion Mike Gular lacks a big-race victory at Penn Can Speedway.
He would like to change that on Friday, Oct. 14 when the Susquehanna, Pa., oval hosts the 'King of the Can' 50-lap big-block/small-block Modified special offering a $5,000 winner's share. The Green Lane, Pa., driver was a top-five finisher in the Grandview (Pa.) Speedway NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 358-Modified standings this season and placed seventh at Big Diamond (Pa.) Speedway. He was a feature winner at both Big Diamond and Grandview in 2011. The 28-year-old driver was the first to file an entry form for the 'King of the Can' event.
Many will remember Gular's 'Hot Summer Night' drive in 2009 when he charged from 19th to the lead in a Penn Can Race of Champions event only to run out of fuel with the white flag in the air. Gular finished fourth in last October's 'King of the Can' headliner. For 2011, the 'King of the Can' is a co-promotion involving Brett Deyo and speedway managers Al Wilcox and Reed Miller for the first time.
Gular, a champion at Penn Can in 2007 and 2010, hopes to add the track's signature race to his resume.
"Everyone knows that race," Gular said. "It's been around for a while and always brings in some bigger names. We've won races and championships at Penn Can, but we haven't been able to get the 'big one' behind us."
The 'King of the Can' has been the signature Penn Can event since 1999 when Brian Weaver of Windsor, N.Y., took the inaugural victory. This year, the Modified portion is a Deyo-Wilcox-Miller promotion for the first time and serves as the final leg of the VP Racing Fuels Short Track Four Crown presented by Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.

New for 2011, a number of contingency awards will be distributed from companies including American Racer/Lias Tire, BFP Specialty, Shiley Fabrication and more. Lap money will also be collected at $20 per lap. A Hard Charger Award, Hard Luck Award and other bonuses will be announced as the event approaches.

Kevin Bates of Lake Ariel, Pa., won last year's 50-lap 'King of the Can' event.

Joining the Modifieds on the Friday portion of the 'King of the Can' will be Crate (602) Sportsman ($1,000 to win) and Street Stocks in a $500-to-win event. The top-three Crate Sportsman earn the 13th, 14th and 15th starting positions, respectively, in the Saturday (Oct. 15) Race of Champions Sportsman event. The Street Stock winner starts seventh in the Trackside Products Street Stock Series event to be run on Saturday.

Sunday (Oct. 16) will now serve as the Friday rain date.

Saturday's program on Oct. 15 is comprised of RoC Sportsman, Late Models, Trackside Products Street Stocks, TSRS/CRSA Sprint Cars, Four Cylinders and Factory Stocks/Trucks.
