Penn Can Speedway 'Heats Up' Tuesday, August 9 With 'Hot Summer Night' Race of Champions 60 Plus Open Sportsman Paying $1,000; History of Thrilling Finishes Makes This Event A Must-See For Race Fans
SUSQUEHANNA, PA – Penn Can Speedway will 'heat up' in the month of August with the annual midweek 'Hot Summer Night' special.

On Tuesday night, Aug. 9, the Susquehanna, Pa., oval plays host to the 'Hot Summer Night' big-block/small-block Modified 60-lap event paying a healthy $5,000 to the winner. The Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour 'Hot Summer Night' event has a history of thrilling finishes, including last year's three-wide, final lap pass executed by Stewart Friesen, who went on to win the RoC Dirt Modified Tour overall crown.

The 'Hot Summer Night' is the second 2011 co-promotion at Penn Can involving track managers Reed Miller and Al Wilcox with special events promoter Brett Deyo. The 'Clash at the Can' event on June 7 was won by Billy Decker of Unadilla, N.Y., over Modified up-and-comer Danny Tyler of Cottekill, N.Y. The race is also event No. 2 of the VP Racing Fuels-Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. Short Track Four Crown.

The 'Hot Summer Night' special one year ago pulled the crowd to its feet with Canadian driver Stewart Friesen in the Tadd Parks No. 1 sweeping around track regular Alan Rudalavage and Grandview (Pa.) Speedway invader Duane Howard on the final lap to win from 25th starting position! The win was Friesen's first ever at Penn Can, the one-third-mile oval on the Keystone State side of the New York/Pennsylvania border.

Two years ago, two-time Penn Can Modified champion Mike Gular of Green Lane, Pa., had driven the Terry Fasnacht-owned No. 53 from 19th to the lead only to run low on fuel with the white flag flying. The resulting scramble saw Jeff Rudalavage of Olyphant, Pa., earn the victory. The event was shortened from 75 to 60 laps following the 2009 race to accommodate methanol cars.

For the Aug. 9 event, RoC Modified heat races will be extended to 12 laps to allow drivers drawing poorly to advance.

The Sportsman take part in an 'open' 25-lap event paying $1,000 to the winner as part of the 'Hot Summer Night' program. All open and crate engine Sportsman drivers are invited to participate. A full rules list is avaiable on the BD Motorsports Media website: www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com. The Trackside Products Race of Champions Street Stocks complete the program.

Modified racers have more to look forward to than the strong posted purse. A number of contingency awards have been posted for 'Hot Summer Night' competitors, including:

*An American Racer tire courtesy of Lias Tire Company (Indiana, Pa.) for the race winner

*A $250 gift certificate from BFP Specialty (Bethel, Pa.) for a driver finishing outside the top five (random draw)

*A three-foot Subway sub for the winner courtesy of Mirabito Travel Center Subway in Castle Creek, N.Y.

*Two FREE passes to one day of the Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway 'Icebreaker V' RoC opening weekend to the winner

*A Hard Luck package from Shiley Fabrication of Williamstown, Pa., to include a front bumper, rear bumper and left- and right-side nerf bars. The Hard Luck recipient will be selected by race officials.

Racers entering all Short Track Four Crown events will be eligible for a long, growing list of contingency awards. A list is available on the BD Motorsports Media website: www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com.

Liberal rules, designed to entice a wide variety of participants from across the Northeast, have been established for the event as follows:

Tire Information (any stamp):Front tire options: American Racer SD 33 or harder
Left-rear options: American Racer SD 33, 38 or 44
Right-rear options: American Racer SD 38, 44, 48 or 50
For tire information, contact Trackside Products (Al Wilcox) at 607.748.3322

General Race Rules: The standard for engine, body, chassis and safety specs are based upon '04 DIRT rules. Sail panels are permitted for this event. Sail panels will be measured from the ground to the highest point and should be no higher than 65 inches. Sail panels must mirror size and shape side-for-side.

Weight information:Small-Block under 361 c.i., on gas or methanol: 2,400 lbs.
Big-Block or Small-Block over 361 c.i., gasoline only 2,500 lbs.
Small-Blocks running SB2 heads must weigh Big-block weight!

Carburetion:Open competition carburetors allowed – no fuel injection of any type

Heat races will be set by a legitimate draw for position. There will be no fan-torturing time trials. A redraw of top heat finishers will align the top feature starting spots. Cautions will count in the main event from laps 20-40, with no more than five laps scored at a time.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 6:45 p.m. and racing at 7:30 p.m. There is a rain date of Wednesday, August 10 in place.

Penn Can's layout ensures money, fresh rubber and horsepower don't guarantee success, making the 'Hot Summer Night' favorable to low-dollar, weekly teams. Tire wear is non-existent. No conflicts on the dirt Modified calendar will allow the touring series stars and Pennsylvania/New Jersey teams to invade the facility. The makings of an all-star field are in place.

There have been 12 RoC events held at Penn Can since the tour's inception in 2005 with a who's-who of past winners including Decker, Friesen, Howard and Pat Ward in addition to active local stars Joey Grammes, Alan Rudalavage and Brian Weaver.
