Third Kutztown Win for Jeff Hartman; Edgar, Massone, & Gruber Also Victorious On CFFC Night

July 13 - Kutztown, Pa. - Jeff Hartman just keeps on rollin' along...
While the Kutztown Fair Speedway sat through a three week hiatus, Hartman did some traveling...and winning.
During the week leading up to the Fourth of July holiday, the Flagtown, NJ resident captured the overall point title of the 2011 edition of PA 600 Speedweek. Hartman also triumphed in the second race of Speedweek, at the Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa.
On Wednesday, July 13, as the fifth-of-a-mile oval in Kutztown resumed its racing schedule on Checkered Flag Fan Club Night, Hartman notched his third 600cc Micro-Sprint victory of the season at the Berks County speedway, winning a thriller over Ryan Smith, Brett Schoenly, Steve Buckwalter, and Shane Lewis.
Joining Hartman in the winner's circle on Wednesday were Brandon Edgar (270cc Micro-Sprints); Matt Massone (All Star Slingshots); and Kevin Gruber (Xcel Sportsman Modifieds).
On Wednesday, July 20, Jeff Hartman will try to extend his point lead as the Wingless 600cc Micros return to Kutztown at 7 p.m. Brandon Edgar will attempt to win his third consecutive 270cc main event, while Massone and Gruber look for their second victories in the All Star Slingshots and Xcel Sportsman Modifieds, respectively.
Hartman took the green from the inside of row three, as polesitter Brett Schoenly took the early lead over Shane Lewis in the Wingless 600cc feature on Wednesday.
Fourth-starting Ryan Smith jumped up to challenge Lewis for the runner-up spot until, on lap seven, Hartman ducked under Smith for third place. At the halfway mark of the 20-lap feature, Hartman and Smith darted past Lewis for second and third. Just two circuits later, after a few frantic laps of side by side racing, Hartman went to the front, wrestling the lead away from Schoenly.
As Hartman put some distance between himself and his pursuers, the battle raged behind him. Smith, Schoenly, Lewis, Brett Arndt, and Steve Buckwalter, making a rare 600cc start, were using every inch of the race track and trading positions at both ends of the speedway.
Buckwalter started 12th and appeared to get faster as the race progressed. The ARDC Midget Champion (and winner of 410 Sprint Car features at Williams Grove and Port Royal this season) swept around the outside of Arndt, then blasted by Lewis to grab fourth with five laps remaining.
A yellow with three to go gave Smith and Buckwalter one final chance to unseat Hartman from the top spot, but Hartman would not be denied as he flew to his third Kutztown victory of the season.
Lehighton's Brandon Edgar chased Trevor Kobylarz for much of the Winged 270cc main event as the two young lions ran away from veteran and defending track champion Ross Perchak.
Kobylarz' luck turned sour with six to go when he made contact with a lapped car in turns one and two, just as Edgar attempted to dive under the leader. Kobylarz spun and was forced to retire from the race, due to damage from the contact.
That handed the lead to Edgar, and even three late race caution periods did not prevent him and his Ahner Furniture No. 57 from a return trip to victory lane. Jonathan Pepe roared past Perchak on the final restart with two laps left to run, but Pepe finished almost one full second behind Edgar as the checkered fell to end the 20-lapper.
Perchak wound up third, with 16th starting Ryan Smith maneuvering his way to a fourth place finish. Matt McAnally earned fifth place money.
East Stroudsburg's Matt Massone won the All Star Slingshot feature at Borger's Speedway on Saturday, then followed it up by winning his first Kutztown Fair Speedway main event on Wednesday.
Massone led all the way, although Langhorne's Gary Hieber made it interesting. Hieber dueled with Shannon Smith for the runner-up position during the second half of the 20-lap affair before (finally) sneaking by Smith with two to go. Hieber then closed in on Massone, but had to settle for the second place payout at the finish.
Smith, point leader Brett Bieber, and Mike Glass completed the top five. With his triumph, Massone snapped Glass' two race win streak at Kutztown.
Pole man Kevin Gruber wired the Xcel Sportsman Modified field in their main event, surviving an early race battle with Chad Mullen then pulling away to record the victory.
Matt Carman and Ryan Suchon raced neck and neck for several laps as they battled for third position, while Tyler Bartik and Fleetwood's Ryan Kunkle dueled for fifth place. Carman, already a three-time winner at Kutztown this year, eventually squeezed in front of Suchon and finished third, with Bartik taking the checkered in fifth.
Fairgrounds Fodder:
Great to see the return of Steve Buckwalter, the Royersford Rocket to the fairgrounds. Steve was driving the Mike Pjatikin No. 91x, as he did in some of the recently completed PA 600 Speedweek events.
Despite having to wait out a shower that arrived just as warm-ups were getting underway, Wednesday's race went off smoothly once it got started. The final checkered flag of the night flew at about 9:40 p.m.
Wednesday's car counts: 270cc Micros = 25; Wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints = 25; All Star Slingshots = 22; Xcel Modified Sportsman = 11.
Wingless 600cc heat races were won by S. Buckwalter, Rick Perone, and Tim Buckwalter.
Winged 270cc heats went to Tom Schearer, Richie Hartman, and Darin Bartholomew.
Simon Egan, Shannon Smith, and Matt Massone were victorious in qualifying heat action for the All Star Slingshots.
Heat races for the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds were claimed by Andy Ressler and Scott Washburn.

The NAPA Dutch Classic is set for August 3rd and will spotlight the All Star Slingshots in a Briggs & Stratton Mid-Atlantic Silver Region Tour event.
