(JEFF) HARTMAN & CARMAN WIN AGAIN; GLASS FAMILY SHINES AT KUTZTOWN

Kutztown, Pa. - June 8 - Defending track champion Jeff Hartman captured his second consecutive victory on Wednesday night at the Kutztown Fair Speedway.

That's not big news.

The manner in which the Flagtown, NJ speedster recorded his second straight Wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint triumph, however, is worthy of headlines.

Hartman threaded his way from seventh on the starting grid, slipping under Kyle Lick to snare the runner-up position on lap seven as polesitter Brett Arndt set the pace. A yellow flag with eight tours complete set the stage for an epic battle between the former 600cc point champions at the fairgrounds.

For the next ten circuits, Hartman tried the high groove and the low line in an effort to unseat Arndt from the top spot. The duo ran side by side on numerous occasions, inches apart but never touching, with Arndt managing to stay in front each time he and Hartman hammered the throttle as they exited the corners at both ends of the race track.

On the 18th revolution of the 20-lap affair, Hartman finally put the nose of his Delran Auto Body/Hartman Painting/Hyper No. 026 in front of Arndt as they blasted off turn two. He cleared Arndt's No. 71 off turn four, taking the two-to-go signal as the race leader.

One final yellow created a green/white/checkered scenario, but Hartman was not to be denied, holding off Arndt and winning by three-tenths of a second. Brett Schoenly, A.J. Michael, and Brian Carber trailed Hartman and Arndt to the finish line.

Myerstown's Mike Glass won the 2010 All Star Slingshot point title at Kutztown, but this year, just like his fellow competitors, he was chasing Simon Egan to the stripe at the conclusion of all three Slingshot features.

That situation changed on Wednesday, as Glass took full advantage of his pole position starting spot to win his first of the year at the fairgrounds. Glass led wire to wire, keeping Brett Bieber a few car-lengths behind him throughout the 20-lap distance. The runner-up finish was the third in a row for Bieber.

Egan's win streak ended at three, as the Stroudsburg chauffeur climbed from eighth starting position to run third with seven to go, but he could not catch Bieber or Glass, settling for the third place payout.

Travis Bieber finished two spots behind his younger brother, with J.R. Fulper claiming fifth.

The victory was significant for Glass, as it occurred on the night that his daughter, nine-day-old Kayla, attended her first race. She and her mother, race driver Kim Glass, proudly posed for the winner's photos with father/husband Mike.

The Glass family posed for photos a second time on Wednesday, as Kim's brother, Brad Tabertshofer, notched the Winged 270cc Micro-Sprint triumph. Just as his brother-in-law did earlier, Tabertshofer darted from his inside front row starting position and led all the way to register the win.

Defending 270cc point champ Ross Perchak started tenth and methodically worked his way forward, wrestling the runner-up slot from Jarid Kunkle with nine to go. A caution period with 13 laps scored had everyone anticipating Perchak's attempt to steal the lead on the restart. Instead, it was Richie Hartman who sneaked to the inside of Perchak as the green waved once again, with Hartman racing out of turn two in second and Perchak dropping back to third.

One last restart with five laps remaining did not alter the outcome, as Tabertshofer, from White House Station, NJ charged to the victory over R. Hartman, Perchak, Kunkle, and Tommy Kunsman, Jr.

The Flemington Flyer, Matt Carman, followed up his victory on May 25 by leading every lap on Wednesday to register his second win of the season in the Xcel Sportsman Modified division.

With Carman cruising out front, a furious battle ensued for second between Andy Ressler and Doug Borger. Borger finally secured the runner-up position at the halfway point and began to pressure Carman for the lead. Borger's No. 74 got sideways in turn four, causing him to lose two spots and allowing Ressler to again mount an attack on the race leader. The previous week's victor, Scott Washburn, closed in on Ressler, offering a challenge for second that permitted Carman to pull away and take the checkered flag by .384 seconds over Ressler. Washburn, Borger, and Ryan Kunkle completed the top five.

On Wednesday, June 15, the 600 Pro Series Tour invades Kutztown for a wingless event that will bring the best 600cc wheel-twisters to the fairgrounds oval. The Pro Series competitors will battle in a dual heat race qualifying format, with extra cash and valuable Pro Series points on the line. The Wingless 600cc pilots will be joined by the Winged 270cc Micros, the All Star Slingshots, and the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds. Warm-ups begin at 6:30, with the first heat race going green at 7 p.m.

Fairgrounds Fodder...some of those 600 Pro Series drivers were on hand at Kutztown on Wednesday to dial in their mounts for next week's Tour event. Brock Bilger, Ryan Wilson, A.J. Michael, and Tyler DeVault took part in the action, with Michael, from Lititz, earning a fourth place finish in the feature.

A total of 91 racecars entered Wednesday's program, with 29 teams signing in for Wingless 600cc activity and 25 cars took part in the Winged 270cc action. The All Star Slingshots boasted a 23-car field, and 14 of the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds were on hand.

While her father and uncle were winning features, Kayla Glass noted their accomplishments by sleeping through most of the evening; even the noise from the racecars did not wake her.

Brian Carber, Brett Schoenly, and A.J. Michael won heat races for the Wingless 600's. Ryan Greth took the consolation win.

A.J. Gerhart, a nephew to Mike Glass, won the first heat race for the All Star Slingshots, while his uncle notched the victory in heat race #2.

Richie Hartman, Harlee Schaffer, and Matt McAnally were victorious in the three heat races for the Winged 270cc Micro-Sprints, and the two Xcel Sportsman Modified heats went to Andy Ressler and Matt Carman.
