JEFF HARTMAN, MILLER, & WASHBURN GET FIRST WINS; EGAN MAKES IT THREE STRAIGHT AT KUTZTOWN

Kutztown, Pa. - June 1 - Defending point champion Jeff Hartman snagged his first Wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint victory of the season on Wednesday night at the Kutztown Fair Speedway, and Jessica Miller impressively held off some of the best 270cc wheel-twisters in the business to score the first Kutztown triumph of her career. Scott Washburn notched his first win of the 2011 season, taking the checkered flag in the Xcel Sportsman Modified feature, while Simon Egan continued his hot streak in the All Star Slingshot Class, winning his third consecutive main event at the fairgrounds.
Jeff Hartman, from Flagtown, NJ, jumped from the pole position to lead all 20 laps in the Wingless 600cc headliner. The action behind Hartman was hot and heavy, as Ryan Smith, Brett Michalski, Brett Schoenly, and Brett Arndt fought for the runner-up spot throughout the race. In the latter stages, they were joined by the leader's brother, Jay Hartman, who made it a five-car tussle for positions two through six.
Jeff Hartman cruised to the checkered by more than two seconds over Smith, who held off a furious bid by Schoenly to score the second-place finish. Jay Hartman passed Arndt late in the going to earn the fourth place cash.
Only one yellow flag slowed the pace of the Wingless 600cc feature race. The final 14 circuits went non-stop.
Sixteen-year-old Jessica Miller of Sunbury made it a clean sweep on Wednesday by winning her qualifying heat race, then leading wire to wire in the main event for the winged 270cc Micro-Sprints. While Miller started on the pole in the Widdoss Racing No. 28, she did not have an easy road to victory. She had to hold off some savvy veterans of the division, and she did so in impressive fashion.
With Miller out front, Ryan Smith sliced his way toward the front of the field, passing Tom Schearer for the runner-up slot on lap four. A couple of tours later, Richie Hartman drove his RTS House Car, the No. 2, past Schearer to grab third. Both Smith and Hartman set their sights on Miller, who had built up a nice cushion, only to have the caution lights flash on with seven laps complete.
Miller displayed the icy composure of a grizzled veteran, darting away on the restart and leaving Smith to fight off the attempts by Hartman to steal second. Smith fell victim to mechanical issues just prior to the halfway point, putting Hartman in the runner-up position.
As Hartman tried to run down the race leader, Schearer and Harlee Schaffer waged an entertaining battle for third, trading the spot several times during the middle stages of the 20-lapper. Schaffer eventually won the duel but lost the position late in the race to eleventh-starting Ross Perchak.
Try as he might, Hartman could not catch the high flying Miller - even a caution period with two to go did not influence the outcome of this one. Miller simply pulled away on the final restart, beating Hartman to the finish line by more than half-a-second.
Perchak, Tommy Kunsman Jr., and Schaffer rounded out the top five.
Scott Washburn, Emmaus, shot from his seventh starting position to place himself in third by the time four circuits were completed in the Xcel Sportsman Modified feature.
Washburn slipped past Ryan Mohr for second on the fifth trip around the oval, then edged in front of leader Mark Schaffer at the start/finish line as lap six was scored. With the second half of the 20-lap main event running caution free, Washburn raced off into his own zip code, winning by 3.6 seconds over Ray Horning.
Ryan Kunkle held off Doug Borger to finish third, with Chad Mullen crossing the line in fifth.
In winning his third consecutive All Star Slingshot feature this season at Kutztown, Stroudsburg's Simon Egan had a relatively easy time.
Egan started on the pole, then dashed away from the field as the first eleven revolutions went clean and green. Brett Bieber ducked under his brother, Travis, to secure third spot in the early going, then snatched the runner-up position from Branden Clauss one lap after the halfway signal.
Despite a few restarts during the second half of the event, Bieber was not able to offer a serious challenge to Egan. Clauss maintained third for his best finish of the season, with Gary Hieber and J.R. Fulper completing the top five.
The Kutztown Fair Speedway swings back into action on Wednesday, June 8 with the same four divisions (Wingless 600cc and Winged 270cc Micro-Sprints, All Star Slingshots, and Xcel Sportsman Modifieds) competing in qualifying heats, consolations, and 20-lap features. Gates open at 4:00, with warm-ups at 6 p.m. Adult General Admission is $8.00, Students (ages 10 - 17)/Seniors, and Kutztown residents with I.D. admitted for just $5.00. Children under the age of 10 are free, and parking is always free at the fairgrounds!
Coming up on June 15 the 600 Pro Series Tour invades the fairgrounds as the area's best 600cc throttle-jockeys do battle in a dual heat race format. The increased payoff will bring all of the division's aces to Kutztown as the Pro Series pilots go wild without wings.
June 22nd will see the return of the Junior Slingshot National Tour to Kutztown, as the younger Slingers from all over the northeast converge on Berks County. The Xcel Sportsman Modifieds will have the night off when the Junior Slingshot Tour visits Kutztown.
Fairgrounds Fodder...the extremely warm temperatures, the chance of thunderstorms (which never appeared, thankfully), and the USAC Sprint Cars at another track in the area all combined for a decreased, but still solid, car count on Wednesday. There were 19 of the Wingless 600cc Micros and 25 of the Winged 270cc racers. The All Star Slingshots drew a field of 18, while the Xcel Sportsman had an entry list of 15, for a total of 77 racecars towing to Kutztown's midweek show.
Race organizer Kerry Meitzler had a rough day on Wednesday. Driving the speedway's water truck to be filled at a nearby quarry as he always does, Meitzler arrived to find the quarry shut down due to blasting. He returned later in the day, only to discover the blasting had not gone well, and the quarry was still closed. When Meitzler came back a third time, the quarry was open but the pump (used to transport the water from the deep pit to the water truck) was broken. Employees of the quarry finally got the pump repaired and filled Meitzler's water truck.
The end result was less water than normal on the track, as Meitzler ran out of time to apply an ample amount of liquid that was needed due to the hot temperatures and the absence of rain over the past week to week-and-a-half. While some dust was present during the features, the track surface was still racy as evidenced by the amount of passing that took place in each main event.
WIX Filters 100 Nights of Racing provided prize packages for all four winning drivers, along with numerous fan giveaway items such as t-shirts, travel mugs, and decals. Wednesday was also Racers Roundtable Night, and Ms. Racers Roundtable.com, Kimmie Trout, helped to distribute the WIX Filter merchandise to the fans.
Heat race winners on Wednesday included Jay Hartman and Steve Kemery in the Wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints; Harlee Schaffer, Tom Schearer, and Jessica Miller in the Winged 270cc Micros; Matt Carman and Doug Borger in the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds; and in the All Star Slingshot division, Gary Hieber and Brett Bieber were victorious.
