"Anyone" Can Win The Tuesday, June 7 'Clash at the Can' At Penn Can Speedway; Liberal Rules & Short Track Means Low Budget Teams Have a Chance at Historic $8,000 Event
SUSQUEHANNA, PA – "Anyone can win that race!"

Those were the words of journeyman racer Butch Tittle describing the historic Penn Can Speedway 'Clash at the Can' coming up Tuesday, June 7. The second edition of the midweek event pays $8,000 to the winner of the 60-lap Race of Champions-sanctioned big-block/small-block Modified main. The race features the largest ever posted purse at the Susquehanna County track as event co-promoters Reed Miller, Al Wilcox and Brett Deyo set the theme "Making history, one dollar at a time!"

Tittle, a 40-year veteran of Modified racing who has made a career of racing on a budget, says Penn Can is the ideal track for a high-dollar race of this kind.

Will the teams with big budgets invade? Absolutely. However, Penn Can's tight one-third-mile oval puts emphasis on skill rather than the thickness of the team owner's wallet.

"It's not going to matter," Tittle said of the race team's resources. "On a track that size, it evens the playing field for guys like me."

Tittle, a former Penn Can champion, plans to be in the field for the 'Clash at the Can' driving for car owner Rusty Smith of Bethlehem, Pa. Thanks to Smith's support, Tittle has raced at Penn Can this season in addition to other special events in the area.

History shows Penn Can's weekly regulars can defend their home turf against the invaders. In 11 RoC events contested thus far at Penn Can, six have been won by drivers racing regularly at Penn Can Speedway that season: Brian Weaver and Jeff Rudalavage (two each), Alan Rudalavage and Joey Grammes. Penn Can's drivers have been granted the Friday (June 10) following the 'Clash at the Can' off so they can participate on Tuesday without the worry of a looming points race.

Invaders who have conquered the oval for RoC events include Stewart Friesen, who pulled off a dramatic, last-lap pass last August, and Duane Howard and Pat Ward (two Penn Can RoC wins each).

A strong lineup of invaders is expected, including Friesen, Bobby Varin, defending Penn Can track champion Mike Gular, Brett Hearn, Danny and Alan Johnson, Wade Hendrickson, Jimmy Phelps, Craig Von Dohren, Matt Sheppard, Ryan Godown, Penn Can's Opening Night winner Jeff Strunk, Rick Laubach, Billy Decker, Billy Pauch Jr., Brian Weaver, Tim McCreadie, Danny Tyler and many more.

Representing Penn Can are Kevin Hartnett, a two-time winner this season, last year's King of the Can Kevin Bates, Alan Rudalavage, Mike Schane, Joey Grammes, Brett Tonkin, Mike Colsten and others. Tonkin and Rudalavage were factors in the two RoC-sanctioned events at Penn Can last summer.

Penn Can's 'Clash at the Can' is the first event of the VP Racing Fuels Short Track Four Crown presented by Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc., a four-event mini-series that includes the 'Hot Summer Night' (Aug. 9) and King of the Can (Oct. 16) at Penn Can and the fourth Short Track SuperNationals at Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, N.Y. Oct. 8.

Every position in the starting field for the 'Clash at the Can' has received a pay increase from the inaugural 2010 event, a total boost of more than 30 percent. The pit admission price for competitors remains the same and there are no "gambler's fees" or challenges: the event pays $8,000 straight up, saving racers money!

A talent-filled, diverse field to include racers from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Canada will converge on the Penn Can oval for the history-making event.

Modified racers have more to look forward to than the total payout topping $20,000. A number of contingency awards have been posted for 'Clash at the Can' competitors, including:

*Heat races paying $50 to win each courtesy of Manmiller Electric of Shoemakersville, Pa.

*A $100 Hard Charger Award available to the driver advancing the most positions in the feature event

*An American Racer tire courtesy of Lias Tire Company (Indiana, Pa.) for the race winner

*A $250 gift certificate from BFP Specialty (Bethel, Pa.) for a driver finishing outside the top five (random draw)

*A three-foot Subway sub for the winner courtesy of Mirabito Travel Center Subway in Castle Creek, N.Y.

*A guaranteed starting spot in the New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway 'Friends of Mike' event set for July 30 to the winner

*Two FREE passes to one day of the Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway 'Icebreaker V' RoC opening weekend to the winner

*A custom winner's trophy designed by S&W Awards

*A Hard Luck package from Shiley Fabrication of Williamstown, Pa., to include a front bumper, rear bumper and left- and right-side nerf bars. The Hard Luck recipient will be selected by race officials.

Racers entering all Short Track Four Crown events will be eligible for a long, growing list of contingency awards. A list is available on the BD Motorsports Media website:

Carburetion:Open competition carburetors allowed – no fuel injection of any type

Heat races will be set by a legitimate draw for position. There will be no fan-torturing time trials. A redraw of top heat finishers will align the top feature starting spots. Cautions will count in the main event from laps 20-40, with no more than five laps scored at a time.

Pit admission is $30 with ANY track or series license and $35 without. Grandstand admission is $22 (Adults), $20 (Seniors/Students) and $4 (Youth). Fans attending the previous Friday night event at Penn Can will receive $2 off admission if they present their ticket stub.

Last year, the first edition of the 'Clash at the Can' was a study in diversity, with Penn Can regular Brett Tonkin, New York superstar Danny Johnson, Pennsy racer Duane Howard and Canadian Stewart Friesen in the mix. After an extended side-by-side battle with Tonkin, Howard emerged the victor driving the BPG Racing No. 4 Troyer.

Penn Can's layout ensures money, fresh rubber and horsepower don't guarantee success, making the 'Clash at the Can' favorable to low-dollar, weekly teams. Tire wear is non-existent. No conflicts on the dirt Modified calendar will allow the touring series stars and Pennsylvania/New Jersey teams to invade the facility. The makings of an all-star field are in place.
For drivers following the entire 13-race RoC tour, the 'Clash at the Can' holds added significance. The event offers championship points toward the overall crown.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 6:45 p.m. and racing at 7:30 p.m. The 'Clash at the Can' has a rain date of Wednesday, June 8. Doug Borger's XCel 600 Modifieds and the Race of Champions Trackside Products Street Stocks complete the program.
