LEWIS HUSTLES TO 600cc WIN; PERCHAK IS BOSS OF 270'S; EGAN WINS AGAIN; AND CARMAN SOARS TO VICTORY AT KUTZTOWN FAIR SPEEDWAY ON MAY 25

Kutztown, Pa. - May 25 - Shane Lewis has been a model of consistency this season, piling up top-five and top-ten finishes everywhere he's competed in his new 600cc Micro-Sprint. Until Wednesday, though, the Penn State engineering student has been shut out of victory lane.
That all changed as Lewis, from Honeybrook Pa., darted from his fourth starting spot to the runner-up position on the opening lap of the Wingless 600cc main event presented by the Berks-Schuylkill Oil Heat Association at Kutztown Fair Speedway.
Lewis immediately applied pressure to race leader Doug Snyder, slipping under Snyder's No. 69s to take command on the third trip around the clay oval. Wheeling the Lewis Automotive, Baro Trucking, Ramm Trailers, Hyper Chassis No. 55L, Lewis sprinted away from the field on five occasions, only to have yellow flags impede his march to the winner's circle.
Behind the leader, the action was intense as brothers Jeff and Jay Hartman waged a furious battle for third place. Jay eventually claimed the position, then set his sights on Snyder for second. With six circuits remaining, Jay Hartman squeezed under Snyder and charged into the runner-up slot, with Jeff Hartman following his brother past Snyder for third.
A caution with five to go put Jay Hartman on the leader's tail, but Lewis was up to the challenge on the restart, edging away from Hartman and going on to win by .65 seconds. The brothers Hartman, Jay and Jeff, finished second and third, with Snyder and Rhett Long completing the top five.
Simon Egan, Stroudsburg, flew to his second straight Kutztown triumph, winning the All Star Slingshot main event on Wednesday evening. That race, named after popular State Senator Mike O'Pake, who passed away in December of 2010, was also a Mid-Atlantic Gold Regional Tour event for the Slingshots.
Egan steered one of the first Slingshots ever built by Speedway Entertainment founder Rich Tobias, proving that an eleven-year-old racecar can get the job done. The S&S Speedways No. 55 owned by Randy Smith jumped into the lead from his outside front row starting position and was never headed, although Brett Bieber made several attempts to shove the nose of his No. 32 under the leader as the lead duo negotiated heavy lapped traffic throughout the 25-lap affair.
Egan was able to repel each challenge, holding on to record the victory over Bieber. A three-car tussle for third place was just as entertaining as the battle for the lead, as Matt Massone, Gary Hieber, and J.R. Fulper dueled for much of the race before Hieber prevailed.
At the checkered, it was Egan in front with Bieber, Hieber, Fulper, and Massone making up the top five.
Hazleton's Ross Perchak, last year's 270cc Micro-Sprint point champion at Kutztown, rocketed from third on the starting grid to snare the lead on the first revolution of the 20-lap feature race.
Talented teenager Harlee Schaffer sat on the pole and led the field into turn one, but Perchak blasted by Schaffer on the backstretch and that would be the story of the race, as "Ross the Boss" set the pace for the duration of the event.
Schaffer ran second until ninth-starting Ryan Smith wrestled that position from the No. 95s with six laps remaining. One final caution period, with 15 laps complete, put Smith on the leader's back bumper and set the stage for a classic duel for the win. But Perchak accelerated away from Smith on the restart and maintained a comfortable advantage to the end, crossing the stripe a half-second in front of Smith's No. 2R.
Schaffer, Richie Hartman, and Darin Bartholomew finished third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
Fourth-starting Matt Carman, the Flemington Flyer, sliced his way into second during the early stages of the Xcel Sportsman Modified feature. Carman stalked leader Ryan Mohr for several laps before making his move, diving under the Mohr's orange No. 00 to grab the top spot at the halfway point of the 20-lapper.
A couple of late race yellow flags gave Ryan Suchon some opportunities to overtake Carman, but the Guida Scrap Metal Recycling No. 2 was up to the task, propelling Carman to the win.
Suchon chased Carman to the checkered, with Jeromy Guistwite, Mohr, and Andy Ressler rounding out the first five.
Another Wild Wednesday event is scheduled for June 1st, when RacersRoundtable.com and WIX Filters present qualifying heats, consolations, and 20-lap feature races for the Wingless 600cc and Winged 270cc Micro-Sprints, the All Star Slingshots, and the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds.
Gates open at 4 p.m., with warm-ups at 6:30. The first heat race goes green at 7:00. Adult General Admission is $8.00, Students (ages 10 - 17)/Seniors, Kutztown residents with I.D. admitted for just $5.00. Children under the age of 10 are free, and parking is always free at the fairgrounds!

Fairgrounds Fodder:
* Once again, the car counts were very healthy in all four classes. There were 37 of the wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints; 28 of the winged 270cc Micro-Sprints; the All Star Slingshots drew a field of 26 for their Mid-Atlantic Gold Regional Tour event; and there were 15 of the Xcel Sportsman Modifieds.

* The O'Pake Memorial was run to honor the memory of the extremely popular State Senator from Berks County who passed away in December of 2010. O'Pake was instrumental in bringing auto racing back to the Reading Fair, and he was a staunch supporter of local racing.

* A dual-heat system, typical for their Regional and National Tour events, was utilized for the All Star Slingshots on Wednesday. In Round One, the three heat races went to Joe Nemeth, Matt Mertz, and Gary Hieber. In Round Two, J.R. Fulper, Matt Massone, and Mike Glass scored victories.
The Wingless 600's competed in four heat races, with triumphs going to Rhett Long, Kyle Lick, Brett Smith, and Jesse Hartman. Twin consolations were won by Ryan Smith and Patrick Perone.
Three qualifying heats were contested by the Winged 270cc Micros, with victories going to Matt McAnally, Ryan Smith, and Tommy Kunsman, Jr. The 270cc consolation was won by Marty Gorr.
The Xcel Sportsman Modifieds competed in two heats, with Doug Borger and Andy Ressler notching the triumphs.

* The Berks-Schulykill Oil Heat Association sponsored the event on Wednesday. In addition to boosting the racers' purse, the Association also awarded some lucky fans with tickets to see the Reading Phillies on June 6. More of the R-Phils tickets will be given out to fans at next Wednesday's racing program at the Fairgrounds.
