URC OPENER SET FOR SATURDAY NIGHT, APRIL 9 AT BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY, CURT MICHAEL EYES EIGHTH URC CHAMPIONSHIP CROWN
No other driver in URC history has reached the milestone of winning seven Championship Titles, and when the 2011 season begins at the Bridgeport Speedway on Saturday night, April 9, Curt Michael will be chase of an eight championship. Michael will be defending his accomplishment of 2010, once again behind the wheel of one of URC's most wanted rides, the Bill Gallagher owned Valley Forge INC #5 out of King of Prussia, PA.
At age thirty-nine, the Ocean View, DE driver is excited about the 2011 Rislone URC Sprint Series as the busy schedule is offering one of the highest season long payoffs in the history of the United Racing Company. As for chasing that eighth title, "If it comes our way great, but we go out to win races and that will be our plan again this year", commented Michael.
The success of Curt Michael really centers around the fact that he manages to "avoid the big one" and from a mechanical aspect, the car never breaks. In 2010, the Valley Forge INC 5G finished every race and along the way, Curt's masterful driving ability kept the 5G off the back of the tow trucks. Curt is quick to recognize his crew chief and brother Sean Michael for the teams outstanding efforts in getting the car ready every week and for making the right set-up calls at the track. Curt did point out that, " You have to be fast to win races, and you have to finish to win titles". . . . . it's a combination that seems to work him in earning seven championships and forty-four feature wins with URC. "I drive to the capability of the conditions and situations of each race and when I'm in a position to go for the win, I'll go for it. If the odds are against me, I drive the car to its limit and go back to the pits with the car in one piece", explained Michael.
On race night, Michael is very intense and can usually be found studying the line-up board of not only the heat races, but the feature line-up as well. "I look at who is starting in what positions and just play it over and over again in my head to try and figure out who will do what, and it usually works", commented Michael.
Nearly one-third of the entire Rislone URC Sprint Series schedule offers higher paying events and Curt was quick to say, "I think that's great!". These events do attract and bring in all the top names in sprint car racing and to some degree, that makes winning an even more difficult challenge. "I believe that if you can't beat the invaders, you do need to race against them just to get better, but no matter how you look at it, I'll just say, bring them on".
Curt just can't be happier with his team and when he speaks of his car owner Bill Gallagher, he always gets just a little emotional. "I love driving for Bill, he is a great friend and owner and I'll be his driver as long as he has a sprint car", said Michael.
Michael will again has his hands full with lots of competition from JJ Grasso, Josh Weller, Robbie Stillwaggon, Kramer Williamson, Ed Aikin, Jonathan Swanson, Art Liedl, Becca Anderson and Randy West just to name a few.
