Big- And Small-Block Modifieds Go Head-To-Head June 22 At Big Diamond Speedway When BD Motorsports Media Presents RoC Dirt Modified Tour Anthracite Assault; Race of Champions Returns to Coal Country After Five-Year Hiatus
MINERSVILLE, PA - Big- and small-block Modifieds will race head-to-head when the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour invades Big Diamond Speedway.
Ground-pounding big-block Modifieds will be eligible to compete at Big Diamond Speedway only once this season: in the 60-lap 'Anthracite Assault' RoC Dirt Modified invasion set for Wednesday, June 22. RoC rules, which grant a weight break for engines under 361 c.i., create level competition for 358-Modifieds racing against their more powerful counterparts. The top-finishing small-block Mod (under 361) earns a $500 bonus providing additional incentive for the weekly Pennsy 358-Modified contingent of Big Diamond and Grandview.
Unique to the 'Anthracite Assault' at Big D: Modified racers will be permitted to run sail panels. A minimum of $4,000 has been posted for the RoC Modified winner.
"Mining Modified Excitement" is the theme of the 60-lap event, which will feature a talent-laden mix of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania dirt Modified cars and stars.
"The early interest in this event is very positive," said event co-promoter Brett Deyo. "We're expecting a strong field of cars from as far south as Delaware and as far north as upstate New York. The fans at Big Diamond will have no shortage in variety when the RoC tour returns to Coal Country."
The RoC Dart Dirt Modified Tour has visited Big Diamond on four occasions. The last event was contested on July 25, 2006, a race won by Modified superstar Alan Johnson of Middlesex, N.Y. Johnson went on to win the RoC championship for car owner Jeff Rudalavage that season.
Legendary Billy Pauch Sr. of Frenchtown, N.J., owns two RoC-sanctioned victories at Big Diamond: June 6, 2006 and Aug. 9, 2005. Both victories for 'the Kid' came at the wheel of Norm Hansell's famed No. 357. The first RoC event at Diamond, run June 7, 2005 went to Jeff Strunk, then driving the Chad Sinon-owned No. 88.
The liberal rules package put together by RoC officials should guarantee a diverse field for the 'Anthracite Assault' at Big D. Big- or small-block power is permitted, with a weight break granted to teams under 361 c.i. Teams may use gasoline or methanol. There will be a fuel stop if necessary. Sail panels (two, even, maximum 65 inches high) are be permitted for the event. American Racer tire compounds will be announced in advance of the race.
Strunk (Modified) and Bob Lineman (Sportsman) earned guaranteed starting positions for the 'Anthracite Assault' via their March 26 RoC victories at New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway.
Joining the Modifieds on the program will be RoC Dart Dirt Sportsman in a 30-lap main event. The RoC Sportsman have been featured on four occasions at Big D with past victories going to Kyle Weiss and Mike Lyons (2006) and Arnie Slade and Craig Whitmoyer (2005). Doug Borger's XCel 600 Modifieds complete the tripleheader program in a 20-lap feature.
