POTTSVILLE, PA - Auto racing has taken over the Fairlane Village Mall.
All available space in the Pottsville, Pa., shopping center, 'Where Schuylkill County Shops' has been packed full with a wide variety of race cars from nearby Big Diamond Speedway and beyond as the pre-season car show returns to the mall after several years away. Competitors from Big Diamond's The Station House 358-Modifieds, U.S.S. Achey Sportsman and Wooden Keg Tavern Roadrunners are well represented in addition to Enduro, Slingshot and XCel 600 Modified vehicles.
The show, organized by BD Motorsports media and sponsored by T102 (101.9 FM) 'Best Songs on the Radio' continues through Saturday night (March 12) during mall hours. There is no admission fee for those looking to get a closer look at the cars and stars ready to battle the Big Diamond clay this season.
On Friday night (March 11), the 'Best of Show' trophy will be presented at Center Court (per media judging). A number of driver interviews will begin at 7:30 p.m. Among those scheduled to appear are Michael Weinert, Colt Harris, Kevin Albert Jr., Kenny Eckert Jr., Shawn and T.J. Fitzpatrick, Jeromy Guistwite and many others.
Additionally, a two-man tire-changing contest will be held on Friday night at 8 p.m. The fastest team wins a pair of passes to a 2011 event at Big Diamond. Michael Weinert Racing has offered the Plant Food Company No. 18 358-Modified for use in the contest. Driver Michael Weinert, 15, of Tamaqua, Pa., was last year's Big Diamond small-block Modified Rookie of the Year.
Following the Friday-night festivities, show attendees are invited to the Pottsville Zone Bar & Restaurant for food and drink specials. The Pottsville Zone is located at 337 Peacock Street in Pottsville.
Big Diamond pit memberships, season passes and parking spots are on sale Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights from 7-9 p.m.
