Facility Restoration, Harsh Weather Push Big Diamond Season Opener Back One Week To Sunday, April 10; Open Practice Now Set For April 3
MINERSVILLE, PA - The start to the 39th season of racing at Big Diamond Speedway will have to wait one additional week.
Due to an overwhelming amount of work required to make the facility operational and weather conditions hampering progress, speedway owners Fritz and Krista Roehrig have announced that the Season Opener will be delayed one week to Sunday, April 10. The 5 p.m. start time will remain the same with a 35-lap, $3,000-to-win feature for The Station House 358-Modifieds plus U.S.S. Achey Sportsman and Wooden Keg Tavern Roadrunners on the program.
The open practice session, which had been planned for Friday April 1, has been pushed back two days to Sunday, April 3 at 2 p.m.
"Not only was the facility’s restoration a factor in this decision, but the three-foot-plus snow cover that just melted a week-and-a-half ago at the track also prevented us from completing everything we needed to do," Fritz Roehrig explained. "This week's wet and cold forecast will prevent further progress, so we have no choice but to delay the practice session and opener."
The Roehrigs expect there will be no additional schedule changes from this point forward.
"Because we are focused primarily on getting the pits done and the new clay down onto the track, we are confident that our practice session April 3 will go on scheduled," Roehrig said. "After that, we can shift our focus to completing the remainder of the grandstand area and can have the facility fully ready for the opener on Sunday, April 10."
Last week, the concrete barriers were removed from the corners with the intent of providing additional racing room, preventing multi-car accidents and improving water runoff. A number of other facility improvement projects are currently underway.
