Penn Can History Book Will Be Rewritten With $8,000 ‘Clash at the Can’ June 7; Innovative Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. Short Track Four Crown Series Announced for Penn Can & Five Mile Point
SUSQUEHANNA, PA – The Penn Can Speedway history book will be rewritten this season.
On Tuesday night, June 7, the Susquehanna County clay oval located on the Pennsylvania/New York border vaults into the dirt Modified racing spotlight with the ‘Clash at the Can’ 60-lap Modified event paying a mammoth $8,000 to the winner. The event, co-promoted by Brett Deyo and the Penn Can management team of Al Wilcox and Reed Miller, will be the highest-paying race in speedway history. The ‘Clash at the Can’ event appropriately carries the slogan: “Making history, one dollar at a time.”
Modified drivers across the Northeast are anxious to compete for the large payout on the tire-wear-friendly Penn Can one-third-mile layout, which eliminates the advantage for teams with large budgets or high-dollar engines.
“Penn Can has never seen the likes of what the ‘Clash at the Can’ will bring this summer,” said Southern Tier star Brian Weaver of Windsor, N.Y., an eight-time Penn Can champion who has won in the region's dirt Modified action for the last 20 consecutive seasons. “This is a race that could bring a driver out or retirement. The sparks are going to fly.”
"It has always been a good competitive racetrack," quipped Jeff Strunk, the Pennsylvania 358-Modified star who was a Penn Can regular in the mid-2000s. "You can't beat the racing there. You've got to be up on the wheel, from the first lap to the last lap.
"A race like this (the 'Clash at the Can') raises the bar for the whole area."
"These are the types of events you look for when you're planning out a season," Stewart Friesen, the reigning Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified Tour champion from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., offered "Penn Can is a track where you can go with one set of tires and run them all night. For car owners, it's cost-effective and it's in a central location."
"I'm really looking forward to having a race like this at my home track," noted Brett Tonkin of Carbondale, Pa., the runner-up in Penn Can points last season and a victory contender in last year's 'Clash at the Can' race. "Penn Can regulars always run well in these races. For a weekly guy like me to have a chance to win that much money is big."
"As someone who races for a living, I'm all for having more big-money races," affirmed Frenchtown, N.J., legend Billy Pauch. "It's nice to see someone putting an event out there like this. It's a step in the right direction for Modified racing."
“We’re going to be there,” said Ryan Godown, the star driver from Ringoes, N.J., who was a top-five finisher at the ‘Clash at the Can’ event. “$8,000 is a lot of money for any track, let alone a small track where the cost of racing is minimal.”
Grandview (Pa.) Speedway NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 358-Modified driver Duane Howard battled track regular Tonkin and fought off New York star Danny Johnson to earn ‘Clash at the Can’ laurels in ‘09.
The ‘Clash at the Can’ will serve as Round No. 1 of the four-race Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc.-sponsored ‘Short Track Four Crown’ organized by BD Motorsports Media.
Bob Greene, owner of Pioneer Pole Buildings based in Schuylkill Haven, Pa., has signed on as the sponsor of the ‘Short Track Four Crown’ program. Greene founded the business with wife Diane in 1998.

The second event is set for Penn Can on Tuesday, Aug. 9: the 60-lap ‘Hot Summer Night’ paying $5,000 to the winner, if the $20 “Gambler’s Fee” is posted ($4,000 without).
The ‘Hot Summer Night’ event will feature a ‘race within a race’ concept involving American Racer East Coast Modified Cup tracks. The top-three drivers in points representing each American Racer track on hand at the Can will comprise a team, i.e. ‘Team Accord’ or ‘Team Grandview’ and these teams compete against each other. The team/track trio of drivers with the best average finish share in a cash bonus.
To be included in the team competition, a track must have three representative drivers in the field (if there are more than three, the best three in the current point standings are selected). Teams will be established at the discretion of management and will be announced at the driver’s meeting on race night.
Race fans visiting Penn Can from other venues will be encouraged to show their ‘home team’ spirit by wearing apparel from their respective home speedways.
Last August, Friesen completed a three-wide, go-for-broke pass on the outside of Alan Rudalavage and Howard to win the ‘Hot Summer Night’ bringing the large crowd to its feet. It was one of 25 total wins for the Canadian driver last season.
Penn Can management has taken the Modifieds off the schedule on the Friday nights (June 10 and Aug. 12) following the midweek specials to aid local participation.
Race No. 3 takes place at the historic Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, N.Y., with the fourth running of the Short Track SuperNationals presented by Dart Machinery on Saturday, Oct. 8. The SuperNationals, dubbed as the “Working Man’s Race” has become the low-cost alternative on Columbus Day Weekend for the average ‘weekly racer’ Modified teams.
The 50-lap Modified feature pays $5,000 to the winner (with “Gambler’s Fee” posted) plus lap money and numerous contingency and bonus awards.
The 2010 Short Track SuperNationals drew a gargantuan field of 72 Modifieds, with Justin Holland, a White Lake, N.Y., driver who epitomizes the “Working Man’s Race” motto, earning a victory worth $6,650. The SuperNationals event will have all racing activity on Saturday with an open practice on Friday night (Oct. 7).
The ‘King of the Can’ joins the BD Motorsports media fold for the first time in 2011. Penn Can’s traditional season-end event becomes a Deyo/Wilcox-Miller promotion and is set for Sunday, Oct. 16. The 50-lap event, run while the touring series Modified teams are scheduled to be racing in Canada, will cater to the weekly racers in similar fashion to the Short Track SuperNationals.
The ‘King of the Can’ will feature a purse and format virtually identical to the Short Track SuperNationals. A Non-Qualifiers race featuring drivers failing to make the A-Main the week before at the SuperNationals event will kick off the ‘King of the Can’ program.
Lake Ariel, Pa., driver Kevin Bates won the 50-lap ‘King of the Can’ main event last October.
A focus for BD Motorsports Media will be obtaining lap money for the SuperNationals and ‘King of the Can’ events. Laps will be sold at $20 each and will be posted on the BD Motorsports Media website as they are sold. Last year, nearly $2,000 in lap money was distributed at the SuperNationals.
Drivers attending all four Short Track Four Crown events will be eligible for contingency prizes at year end. Points will be kept during the year with an overall champion announced following the ‘King of the Can’ 50-lapper.
The ‘Four Crown’ concept was formally announced Saturday night (Dec. 4) at the Penn Can Speedway Awards Banquet, held at the Montdale (Pa.) Country Club.
BD Motorsports Media will be a first-time exhibitor at Motorsports 2011 presented by SEF Jan. 21-23 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pa.
