Jason Meyers, Josh Richards and Matt Sheppard were crowned series champions following the fourth-consecutive Lowes Foods World of Outlaws World Finals presented by Bimbo Bakeries and Tom's Snacks, while Meyers, Jimmy Owens and Tim McCreadie took home A-Feature wins in front of a sellout crowd at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

More than 14,000 fans filled the grandstands for the final night of the biggest event of the year at the lightning-fast, four-tenths-mile clay oval. Thousands of fans from 48 states, eight Canadian provinces, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom were in attendance to witness dirt racing's three premier divisions, the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds, end their seasons and crown their respective champions.
Meyers, of Clovis, Calif., clinched his first World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship with a first-place finish in Friday’s A-Feature which was postponed until Saturday afternoon due to inclement weather. Meyers didn’t stop there, also claiming the victory in Saturday night’s A-Feature. Meyers has four wins at The Dirt Track, all of which have come during the World Finals. His first came in 2007 and he claimed his second during last year’s season-ending event.
“I tell you what, words can’t describe what it feels like to win the championship,” said Meyers. “It’s just unbelievable. Everyone’s been telling me all week where I need to finish to win the championship, but I don’t worry about that. I go out there just like we do every week, to try and win the race and stay out of trouble.”
Starting on the outside pole in the 26-car field, Meyers never looked back after taking over the lead from Daryn Pittman coming to the stripe on Lap 11. After assuming the point position Meyers was never challenged, leading the remaining 15 laps of the 25-lap feature.
After trading positions throughout the feature Pittman held off Sammy Swindell to claim the second spot. Swindell finished third, followed by Jason Sides and Lance Dewease.
“To get two wins like we did this weekend against this kind of competition is just incredible,” explained Meyers. “Just look at this crowd here tonight, it’s awesome.”
Meyers finished second in the championship standings last year just 16 points behind four-consecutive time champion Donny Schatz. This year, Schatz is the runner-up finishing 112 points behind Meyers. Meyers posted 12 wins, 36 top-fives and 57 top-10 finishes this season.
The eight-lap sprint car heat races were won by Pittman, Swindell, Cole Duncan and Dewease.
Fred Rahmer emerged victorious in the C-Feature. Tim Shaffer led the field to the checkered flag in the B-Feature, while Pittman claimed the win in the Sprint Car Dash to earn the pole position in Saturday’s A-Feature.
Richards, of Shinnston, W.Va., claimed the 2010 World of Outlaws Late Model Series championship. Entering Saturday’s World Finals A-Feature, Richards led title contender Darrell Lanigan by just 6 points, giving Lanigan a shot at the championship if he finished four spots or better ahead of Richards in the final event. With Lanigan starting the A-Feature 12 positions behind Richards, it seemed as though Richards would have the advantage. However by the halfway mark of the race, Richards was just one spot ahead of Lanigan, as they raced nose-to-tail in fourth and fifth positions respectively. Lanigan passed Richards on Lap 32 to take over the fourth spot, but could make no further progress in the race and Richards earned the championship by just a four-point margin.
Richards, the 2009 series points champion made history Saturday night becoming the first ever World of Outlaws Series driver to win two consecutive titles. Richards amassed eight wins, 27 top-fives and 36 top-ten finishes in 2010. Richard has three wins at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in his career.
“It’s been a great year,” Richards said. “He (Lanigan) definitely made me work for it. Coming down to four points, to be that close at the end of the race and come out on top makes it that much more special.”
Owens, of Newport, Tenn., was victorious in the 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Feature. Richards jumped out to an early lead, but traded the lead with Jonathan Davenport for several laps starting on Lap 15. Owens assumed the lead on Lap 18 and didn’t look back, leading the final 32 laps of the 50-lap event.
The race was slowed by six cautions, but remained caution-free for the final 20 laps. Davenport finished second, followed by Lanigan, Richards and McCreadie
“We had a great car. My hat’s off to the crew they just worked their tails off. We were able to capitalize on the guys early and take home the win,” said Owens.
Davenport, Mike Marlar, Dennis Erb, Rick Eckert, Owens and John Blankenship won the 10-lap heat races for the late models, while Vic Coffey, Earl Pearson Jr., and Lanigan topped the 10-lap late model B-Features.
In the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds A-Feature, Matt Sheppard from Waterloo, N.Y., entered the race 22 points ahead of Jimmy Phelps for the championship. From the drop of the green flag Sheppard was dominant, leading the first 30 laps of the 40-lap race. Following a caution for a blown engine on Billy Decker’s machine, McCreadie took the lead and didn’t look back, pacing the field for the final 10 laps en route to victory.
Sheppard finished second and Danny Johnson finished third, while Tim Fuller and Jeff Brownell Jr. rounded-out the top five.
“Boy that thing took off so bad in the beginning, then it started getting a little faster and faster,” said McCreadie. “I don’t know if we had the best handling car in the world, but we had the best tires underneath it. I’m happy to win and want to thank the whole crowd for coming out.”
Sheppard won the 2010 Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block title, his first-ever title.
“It was a long day and a tough day,” said Sheppard. “It feels good to bring home that championship. We’ve been working since last February to get here and it just feels great.”
In the Big-Block Modified C-Feature, Tim Kerr crossed the line first to take home the win, while Pat Ward and David Van Horn claimed victories in the two 10-lap B-Features.
The Lowes Foods World of Outlaws World Finals concludes the 2010 season at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
