SAMMY SWINDELL WINS THE NATIONAL OPEN AT WILLIAMS GROVE SPEEDWAY

MECHANICSBURG, PA--Sammy Swindell put an end to the Pennsylvania Posse’s 9-race winning streak at Williams Grove Speedway with an impressive victory in the World of Outlaws sanctioned National Open for sprint cars on Saturday night.

Swindell, 54, of Germantown, Tennessee, earned his second National Open crown 13 years after winning his first, and this one was worth $50,000.

Jason Meyers started on the front row and took the lead from Brian Montieth on the front straightaway.

Montieth pressured Meyers for twelve laps before Stevie Smith moved into second place.

Swindell, who started eighth, entered the top three on lap 14 and suddenly became a factor. He had passed Smith for the runnerup spot by the time a red flag fell for a fuel stop with 26 of the scheduled 40 laps complete.

On the restart Swindell drove through the middle of turn one to take the lead from Meyers. Once in front he began to pull away from the field.

At that point Lance Dewease, who started 13th, entered the picture when he took third place from Smith.

Dewease passed Meyers for second on lap 36 and began to erase Swindell’s lead.

A last lap charge by Dewease fell less than a half second (.459) short at the finish.

Meyers settled for third place for the second consecutive year. Smith was fourth and Jason Sides completed the top five.

Tim Shaffer, Kerry Madsen, Paul McMahan, Montieth and Daryn Pittman finished I positions six through ten respectively.

The five heat races were won by Lucas Wolfe, Pittman, Sam Hafertepe, Sides and Meyers.

Kraig Kinser won the B-main. Friday night’s feature winner Greg Hodnett won the C-main and Justin Henderson the D.

Montieth won the dash.

Swindell set fast time in qualifications with a lap of 16.676.

There were 56 cars in competition.
