SHORT STORY

VONDOHREN WINS FOURTH OF SEASON AT GRANDVIEW, GRASSO GETS FIRST URC WIN OF THE SEASON

BECHTELSVILLE, PA June 13, 2010 . . . At one point with just about eight laps completed in the 30-lap NASCAR Whelen 358 Modified feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night it looked as if Craig VonDohren had lost his chance for another win as he was shuffled from a top five spot almost out of the top ten. However the six time champion was able to charge back to the front and take the lead just two laps later and take the Felty Farms NO. 1C to victory lane for the fourth time this season. In the 25-lap feature for URC Sprint cars JJ Grasso came from 10th starting spot to put the B&K Leasing #99 in front on the 9th circuit and lead the rest of the way for his first win of the season.

Duane Howard gave VonDohren a strong challenge but had nothing for the leader in the closing laps and had to settle for second. Mike Gular earned a strong third place finish followed by Terry Meitzler and Jeff Strunk.

Grasso had everything pretty much his way as be charged from 10th to take the lead from Randy West on the 9th lap and then hold off all challengers to gain the victory. Second spot went to Josh Weller followed by Chris Coyle, Randy West and Curt Michael (coming from last starting spot).

Super DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds will be in action in the Traffic Jam 100 on Tuesday, June 15th at 7:30 p.m. Also included Sportsman Invitational and Garden State Vintage Stock Cars. Coming up on Saturday, June 19th is a doubleheader show of NASCAR 358 Modifieds and Late Models starting at 7:30 p.m. and sponsored by Whelen.

FULL RACE RESULTS STORY

VONDOHREN AGAIN IN VICTORY LANE AT GRANDVIEW WHILE GRASSO GETS FIRST URC SPRINT WIN OF THE SEASON

BECHTELSVILLE, PA June 13, 2010 . . .Add another feature win to the long list of victories, 74 career wins, for six time track champion Craig VonDohren. The Boyertown racer wheeled the Felty Farms No. 1C to victory Saturday night in the 30-lap Banes Roofing NASCAR Whelen All American Series 358 Modified feature at Grandview Speedway giving him his fourth win of the season and second in as many weeks.

The United Racing Company 25-lap Sprint car feature race saw JJ Grasso of Pedricktown, NJ drive the B&K Leasing No. 99 to victory. The win was the first of the season for the defending champion.

Two multi car accidents were in the record books before the first lap of the 30-lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature was completed. On the third wave of the green Kevin Albert Jr. charged to the front and set the pace for the early laps. With seven laps completed VonDohren had moved into the top five and was working his way to the front. VonDohren got caught up in someone else’s miscue and rode over another competitor but was able to keep going after being shuffled back several positions. By the 10th lap Craig had regained all the lost spots and charged to the front getting by Grandview rookie Kevin Albert Jr. for the lead.

Once in front VonDohren was able to lead all the laps except one when Duane Howard, who had challenged the leader for a number of laps, was able to sneak out front. The lead was short lived as VonDohren was credited with the top spot on the next lap and the laps that followed right on up to the checkered flag.

For his win the Boyertown racer picked up $2,200. NASCAR 358 Modified point leader Duane Howard (Oley) settled for second increasing his lead in the standings for the 2010 title. Third was earned by Mike Gular (Green Lane) followed by Terry Meitzler (Kutztown) and Jeff Strunk (Bechtelsville).

Randy West took the lead at the drop of the green in the 25-lap United Racing Company Sprint car feature race. The second lap included three separate spins and tangles in three different locations on the track. On the restart West was back in front but a five car tangle in Turn 2 eliminated point leader Trevor Lewis on the third lap.

With three laps in the record book Randy West was comfortable in front of the field of hard charging sprinters and JJ Grasso was treating fans to quite a show of high groove action as he moved through the field. At the nine lap marker Grasso took command and held on to the top spot until the checkered flag fell.

Grasso did create quite a stir amongst the fans with two laps to go when he bounced off the wall in the fourth turn but it seemed to have no impact on the condition of the race car and he was able to go on to victory.

In victory lane an excited winner climbed on the wing of his race car to celebrate before doing his victory lane interview.

Second spot went to Josh Weller (Mertztown) followed by Chris Coyle (Wilmington, DE), Randy West (Boyertown) and Curt Michael (Ocean View, DE) who came from last starting spot in the 24 car starting field.

Davey Sammons (Bordentown, NJ) took a wild flip in the second qualifying heat of the evening but was able to walk away. His race car was destroyed.

Qualifying heats for the NASCAR 358 Modifieds, each 12 laps, were won by Kyle Follweiler, Duane Howard, Dan Waisempacher and Andy Burkhart. The consolation races, 10 laps each, had Jason Hamilton and Ron Seltman as winners.

In the URC Sprint qualifiers, each 10 laps, the wins went to Randy West, Kevin Darling and Chris Weiss while the 10-lap consolation race was won by Art Leidl.

The Dan’s Deli Halfway Award went to Craig VonDohren while the Cargo Trailer Sales 10th Place Award was earned by Jon Kellner Sr.
