Bechtelsville, PA – June 15, 2010 – Already sitting atop Grandview Speedway’s all-time Modified win list, local standout Craig VonDohren added to his Keystone State legacy rallying to score a dramatic Super DIRTcar Series victory in the 13th Annual ‘Traffic Jam 100’ on Tuesday night.
In the midst of extending his career track count to 78 open-wheel triumphs, the Oley, Pa. veteran became the 70th driver to take a checkered flag in DIRTcar Racing Northeast’s premier traveling tour for Big-Blocks. And he pulled off the formidable feat utilizing a Small-Block engine that carried him from 23rd to first-place in 90 laps around the racy third-mile oval nestled in the hills of Central Pennsylvania.
“This is just an unbelievable win tonight, these guys are the best there is traveling,” remarked VonDohren, 46, after scoring his third straight feature win at Grandview, his fifth of the season that was easily the most impressive of the lot. “They come in here and all ran really well, I’m just glad to compete against them.”
“We’re pertty much small-blockers, just used the home track to our advantage. Could go up north to Brewerton (speedway) tomorrow and be out to lunch with a Big-Block. These guys are the best around so this is one of my giggest wins ever, not the richest but certainly among the top in terms of prestige,” noted VonDohren, who boasts a successful short-track career on dirt spanning 30 years and more than 250 victories on the Penn-Jersey circuit.
Perennial rival Duane Howard also from nearby Oley trailed VonDohren by 10 car-lengths at the stripe, followed by Empire State series stalwarts Dale Planck from Cortland, Baldwinsville’s Jimmy Phelps, Billy Decker from Unadilla, Waterloo’s Matt Sheppard and Rochester native Danny Johnson. New Jersey pilots Michael Storms and Ryan Godown, and second-generation star Ryan Phelps completed the Top-10.
“We decided to go with a Small-Block car tonight the way the track has been, and we worked our butts off the last two days changing everything over to run gas and Hoosiers (tires),’ noted VonDohren, following his fourth ‘Thunder on the Hill’ race win promoted by Bob Miller at Grandview. “It was a big gamble, especially with the conditions early on, but things just went our way at the end.”
“Drew a terrible number in the heat race and got caught in the first qualifier when the track was wet. That race was stacked with Hearn, Horton, Sheppard, Tomkins and Phelps and I was pretty ticked off when it ended. So after running the consi I thought a Top-10 finish would be pretty good with so many good guys starting ahead of me.”
“Just kept chipping away. chipping away and my guys never stopped digging. I can’t thank my family and sponsors enough, everybody that was behind me today and throughout the season,” said VonDohren, who not only clinched preferred starter status in the prestigious Syracuse 200 Championship race on Oct. 10 of Super DIRT Week XXXIX at the New York State Fairgrounds, he also secured guaranteed starter status for the 358-Modified portion of DIRTcar Northeast’s crown jewel event held the Saturday prior in autumn.
The evening began the same way it did in two of the three series shows already staged in 2010, with ‘Super Matt’ Sheppard earning the Bilstein Shocks Fast Time award as he bested 35 other entries in early qualifying runs. Buckled into the familiar blue Felty Farms no. 1c Kauffman's BBQ Chicken-Millville Glass/TEO machine powered by Ford engine prepared by Wide Open Technology, VonDohren could only muster a 22nd best clocking nearly a half-second off Sheppard’s preliminary round pace.
VonDohren was visibly quicker in his last chance consolation race, chasing Gary Tomkins most of the way before settling for the runner-up position, which was good enough to afford him a starting spot inside row 12 to begin the 100-lap main. It was still a long way to the front with the likes of seven-time and defending Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Mr. DIRTcar Champion Brett Hearn, two-time Grandview series race winner Decker and current tour points leader Sheppard filing up ahead in the front six rows on the 30-car grid.
Canadian invader and former track points chaser Stewart Friesen dashed ahead of front-row partnerPlanck on the initial start with Storms in close pursuit. Decker and Sheppard joined the fray up front with five laps scored and remained there when Horton and Tomkins tangled to bring out the first of four yellow flags on lap 10.
Friesen was dialed in aboard his no. 1 Pizza Logs-Jeff Daley & Sons Oil Service-Westmoreland Golf Club/TEO entry, reaching the back of the pack after just eight times around. On the ensuing lap 20 restart, Decker charged past both Planck and Storms to gain control of the runner-up slot, while a quarter of the way through the century grind Jimmy Phelps and Sheppard had also moved into top-five positions.
Frustration continued for Horton as the Dick Biever-owned no. 14 Alpha Distribution Solutions-McKeansburg Hotel/TEO mount steered by the Neshanic Station, N.J. slowed on lap 33 with a flat right-rear tire to incur a second slowdown. Friesen and Planck remained on course up front with Decker, Sheppard and Phelps waiting for a mistake.
The next restarted proved pivotal for Planck in his unlettered black RezX Racing no. 77x Twin Leaf Express(Ft. Covington)/Bicknell ride, as the Fulton Speedway series race winner blasted by Friesen to forge the first lead change on lap 37. At the halfway mark the pair held their prominent posts while Howard cracked the front-five for the first time with Decker and Sheppard now clearly in sight. VonDohren was suddenly making his presence known as he finally slipped past Pat Ward to take over seventh halfway through.
A turn four tangle on lap 51 resulted in Eastern New Yorker Ronnie Johnson looping his no. 2 Palmer's Service Center-Witz Roofing/TEO Modified on the frontstretch and with yellow lights flashing, Hearn ducked pitside for a quick tire change. Back under green the Planck-Friesen fight swelled up front although VonDohren demanded just as much attention as he reached the top-five with 70 laps on the board.
Three more times around, the popular Pennsylvanian disposed of Sheppard and took advantage of heavy traffic to drive under Friesen exiting turn for second with 15 laps still to go. Zeroing in on Planck over the next half-dozen circuits, VonDohren fulfilled his mission to the front as he used Lance Willix as a pick to roll under Planck on lap 91.
Friesen and Planck made contact to force out the fourth and final caution on lap 93, leaving Friesen with a broken front end as he limped pitside, but not before tapping Planck in the rear to show his displeasure.
The final run to the checkers was uncontested for VonDohren, yet Planck lost second to Howard on the lap 93 restart before Decker nosed ahead of Sheppard on the final lap to fill out the final front-five. Willix was the last of 16 cars to finish on the lead lap, with 19 making it to the end.
“Didn’t really know how good the car was because the farther we got toward the front the better the cars were,” added VonDohren, whose previous eight DIRTcar Modified wins were registered at Bridgeport (NJ) Speedway (6), Delaware Int’l Speedway and Volusia Speedway Park during the 2003 Florida DIRTcar Nationals. “I raced with (Pat) Ward for a while and when I finally got by him the car seemed to get better. The track slickened up and the Big-Blocks started spinning tires and that’s first time I knew I had a good chance to reach the front.”
After becoming a first-time tour winner himself in last year’s April opener at Big Diamond (Pa.) Raceway, Howard fell 3.491-sec. shy in adding a second Super DIRTcar Series victory in familiar territory behind the wheel of the potent BPG Racing no. 4 Mavericks Motorcycle Club-Alex's Lemonade/Troyer entry.
“Craig hit it right with that Small-Block, he brought in a good deal tonight,” said Howard, also 46, a third-place finisher in the 2008 Syracuse 200 during Super DIRT Week in a rare appearance to the Salt City. “He’s been fast and definitely the car to beat here right now, we just need to pick it up a little more to get by him.”
“We were just a little loose, had a little too much power out there. Our special race program has really stepped up and we want to win one of these DIRT shows here. I’ve always been fast, just never able to pull it off. It’s a shame we don’t race against these guys more often, it’s really a lot of fun. But still, to come through the pack like Craig did tonight, its amazing how good his car really is,” Howard stated.
Finishing seventh in his last tour trip to Grandview in 2008, Planck was relegated to the show position on foreign soil despite leading the most laps for the second time in four series stops this season.
“I figured it was just a matter of time, was looking for somebody in the infield to tell me when the bottom was going to get good. Just couldn’t find anybody that would signal to me,” noted Planck, 39, who followed up his Fulton tour triumph with a seventh-place tally at Cayuga County Fair Speedway over Memorial Day Weekend to help climb to third in the current Super DIRTcar Series point standings. “But these guys that run here every week, they knew what (track) was going to do.”
“I had a feeling out there in front that running the bottom was going to win this race, just a matter of time. For a long time I was looking at ‘Is this the night I get lucky and roll around the top and get the win?’ but no, it wasn’t to be. I’m still ecstatic here in third. This is a good run for us, and we need runs like this for the overall big picture here.”
“It’s been a real good year, we made changes over the winter with our engine and car programs that have really helped. Can’t thank Carey (Terrance, owner) enough. Its kind of bittersweet because I led most of it tonight, but it is what it is and I’m happy here with third,” summed up Planck.
The 2010 Super DIRTcar Series gets right back to action with Orange County Fair Speedway concluding the first doubleheader of the season on June 16. Brett Hearn’s ‘The Big Show 2’ in Middletown, N.Y. is on tap Wednesday evening with $6,000 waiting for the winner along with a guaranteed starting berth in the Syracuse 200 during Super DIRT Week in October.
