SSP Results From Opening Day Weekend Sat/Sun

Knopp and Kreitz Victorious at SSP’s Opening Weekend on Saturday and Sunday







Newberrytown, PA (April 11, 2010) – On Saturday night, April 10, Chris Knopp won the 20-lap Late Model feature on Saturday night at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. Then on Sunday night, Don Kreitz won a thrilling 25-lap Sprint Car feature event over Tyler Walker.







On Saturday, Chris Knopp wired the field to win his first Late Model feature event of the season. Knopp, a former Sprint Car driver and now SSP regular, grabbed the lead after a first lap 15 car pileup shook up the starting lineup. Charles Potts came to the finish in second, followed by Larry Baer, Kyle Saylor and Bob Minnich. Randy Christine and Saylor were the heat race winners.







Doug Bennett started the season off on the right foot by winning the Street Stock main event over a hard charging Scott Thunberg. Thunberg was glued to Bennett’s bumper the entire race, but was unable to make the winning pass and had to settle for second. Sam Rial finished third in his Street Stock debut with Brian Hauenstein and Brett Pickel rounding out the top five.







Travis Horan scored the victory in the first XSC Elite feature event over Patrick McClane and Andrew Frye. Jeff Keefer and Jason Failor completed the top five.







Donnie and Ray Broderick led the Xtreme Stock Car field to the finish with Donnie besting his father Ray at the end for the victory. Tim Hahn finished third with Matt Adams and Jason Failor rounding out the top five.







Matt Watkins picked up the feature win in the visiting PA Sprint Series main event over Mike Wagner II and Todd Spangler.







On Sunday night, practice paid off for Don Kreitz in the 25-lap Sprint Car Spring Classic main event. Kreitz participated in the last bi-weekly Wednesday night Test & Tune to dial in his 800+ horsepower vehicle to the track. Kreitz led from start-to-finish to capture the main event for the Super Sprint Cars over Tyler Walker. Walker closed in on Kreitz’s rear bumper many times during the race as the two diced their way through lapped traffic, but Kreitz’s flawless drive did not leave any openings for Walker. Polesitter Greg Hodnett dropped back at the start but recovered to finish third ahead of rim-rider Lance Dewease and Fred Rahmer.







Greg Hodnett defeated Don Kreitz in the “King of the Hill” match races to earn the pole position for the feature event. Alan Krimes, Daryn Pittman and Hodnett won their respective heat races.







In the wingless ARDC Midget feature event, Dusty Heistand grabbed the early lead until Steve Buckwalter took command on lap 9. Buckwalter extended a sizeable lead over the field. On the final circuit, a mechanical failure caused Buckwalter’s vehicle to stumble, handing the lead to Billy Pauch Jr. who crossed the finish line for the win. Drew Heistand finished second followed by Steve Lenig, Dusty Heistand and Brett Arndt. Buckwalter nursed his car home to an eighth place finish.







Buckwalter did return in the make-up feature event to dominate the race for the victory.







Racing action returns to the SSP Outback Track on Friday night, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. featuring quarter midget, kart and Adult Speedcar racing action.







Racing action returns to the Big Track at SSP on Saturday night, April 17 with the Late Models, Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars, XSC Elite, PENNMAR Vintage Cars and Mini Vans.







Saturday will also be the first “Hometown Heroes” night of the season featuring the towns of Manchester, Mount Wolf and York Haven. Before the races begin, the drivers from those hometowns will have the opportunity to display their cars and meet the fans at the front gate of the speedway. The drivers will also be interviewed during the night’s racing program. Also, all fans entering the speedway from that driver’s hometown being honored will be admitted FREE to the grandstands by showing proper photo identification and filling out an information card at the ticket booth.

The Next Wednesday Night Test & Tune is on April 21











The next Wednesday Night Test & Tune session will be held on Wednesday, September 23 at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. It is open to any type of racecars capable of competing on the 4/10 mile oval. The cost is $12.00 per person for pit passes and a $20.00 fee for each racecar entering the pit area ($32.00 per car & driver combination). Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with open track time from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. by class. Each session will be 6 – 8 laps per session. The grandstands are open free to the public. Each class will receive 4 to 5 rounds of 6/8 laps each or more if time permits. The fuel pumps from Miller’s Racing Parts will not be open. Anyone needing fuel should contact Miller’s Racing Parts directly at 717-766-0181. The main concession stand will be open throughout the night.







Also on Wednesday night, there will an open practice session for quarter midgets and karts at the Outback Track from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. under the lights. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with open practice from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The cost will be $20.00 per driver with no charge for anyone else entering the grandstand and “cold pit” areas. All Outback Track participants should enter the pits from the Kise Mill Road entrance behind turn 2 of the “Big Track.”
