"Working Man's Race" Returns To Five Mile Point Speedway; Third Short Track SuperNationals Planned For Oct. 8-9; Dale Smith Photography Signs On For Halfway Leader Bonus
KIRKWOOD, NY - The "Working Man's Race" returns to Five Mile Point Speedway in style for 2010.
The Kirkwood, N.Y., oval hosts the Short Track SuperNationals for the second straight year on Columbus Day Weekend, Fri-Sat. Oct. 8-9, 2010. Affordability for the weekly racer is foremost in the mind of event promoter Brett Deyo, who first organized the event in 2006 at Afton (N.Y.) Speedway and resurrected the SuperNationals last year at Andrew Harpell's Southern Tier facility. The '10 Short Track SuperNationals is part of an historic 60th anniversary season at Five Mile Point.
"Last year's format worked well for our competitors and fans," said Deyo, 27, a special events promoter from Boyertown, Pa. Despite unsettled weather, the '09 event packed the grandstand and drew a talent-filled, diverse field of 70 big-block/small-block Modifieds.
"We'll be back this year under the same concept, making a few adjustments here and there to improve. The goal is to build off the success of our 2009 event and keep growing."
Further plans - including a tribute to late speed shop owner Ed Tauschman - will be publicized as the event nears.
All racing activity will be held on the Saturday portion (Oct. 9) of the program, eliminating hotel costs for budget-minded race teams. Friday night (Oct. 8) will be reserved for an open practice session.
"Race teams from all divisions are more than welcome to attend our practice session on Friday," Deyo said. "But we will restrict all racing to one day to keep the costs down for the weekly racer."
A 50-lap big-block/small-block Modified feature will headline the program, with a possible $5,000-plus up for the winner. Tentatively, Race of Champions Dart Street Stocks, Four Cylinders and Vintage Modifieds (open to all groups and clubs) will fill out the SuperNationals.
A "split program" is again planned with qualifying for support divisions held earlier in the day, meaning fans can arrive in time for Modified qualifying and support-division features.
SuperNationals Modified rules are relaxed to encourage participation from across the Northeast. Any 13- by 92-inch Modified tire will be allowed. Sail panels are permitted. Big- and small-block engine combinations running on gasoline or methanol will run with varying weight combinations.
"We will allow teams from across the Northeast to come and race under their own rules, without having to shell out additional money," Deyo said.
Competitors will draw for heat-race starting positions with a feature redraw in place. In the interest of fan entertainment, there will be no time trials.
Contingency and special-award sponsors are already showing interest in the event.
Dale Smith Photography operated by Dale and Sue Smith of Afton, N.Y., will sponsor the SuperNationals halfway lap once again this year. The leader of lap 25 in the feature will collect $500 cash. Jeff Strunk of Bechtelsville, Pa., was the leader at halfway last year.
"Dale Smith has been a great supporter of the SuperNationals from day one," Deyo said. "The drivers truly appreciate what he does for this event. Again this year, the race to lead 25 will bring added excitement to the event."
Kevin Hirthler of Boyertown, Pa., won the '09 SuperNationals over Mike Ricci, Mike Gular, Sean Merkel and Joey Grammes. In the '06 edition, Mike Ricci (Rosendale, N.Y.) defeated J.R. Hurlburt, Brian Weaver, Joey Grammes and Davie Franek.
Additional event, contingency, special-award and lap sponsorships are available by contacting Brett Deyo.
