Baer Returns to SSP’s Victory Lane on Saturday Night
Newberrytown, PA (April 17, 2010) – Dover’s Larry Baer won the 20-lap Late Model feature on Saturday night, April 17 at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. Randy Zechman of Littlestown was victorious in the Street Stock feature with York’s Travis Horan winning his second straight XSC Elite feature. Donnie Broderick of Lancaster also scored his second straight Xtreme Stock Car victory of the season. Larry Felty of Jonestown won the PENNMAR Vintage Car feature with Robert Fryberger of York winning the 12-lap Mini Van feature.
From the pole position, Gary Potts took the early lead at the start of the 20-lap Late Model event. However, the driver on the move was Larry Baer from his sixth starting position. Every lap, Baer picked off a driver one-by-one by powering around them on the outside. On lap 5 Baer had the lead and took command of the race. Never looking back, Baer won the feature race by 10 car lengths over Gary Potts and Kyle Saylor. Last year’s track champion Jake Jones was also on the move from eighth to second, but mechanical failures sidelined Jones on lap 13. John Moser Jr. moved from 15th to take 4th place at the end. Randy Christine Jr. came from 17th to round out the top five. Jones and Justin Ehrhart scored the heat race wins.
Randy Zechman and Sam Rial, both heat race winners, led the Street Stock field to the green of the 20-lap feature. Zechman grabbed the lead and wired the field to take the win. Scott Thunberg charged from a sixth place starting spot to finish second for the second week in a row. Last week’s winner, Doug Bennett followed home in third with Bob Scott Jr. finishing in fourth. Rial held on for a fifth place finish.
Travis Horan scored his second straight victory in the XSC Elite feature event after early leader Patrick McClane retired on lap 12 with mechanical failures. Brent Hake finished second with Jeff Keefer in third. McClane was the heat race victor.
Donnie Broderick took the lead at the start of the Xtreme Stock Car 20-lap from his third place starting spot. With lots of action close behind Broderick for the entire race, he was able to hold off all challenges to win his second straight of the season. Adam Smith followed in second, but failed post-race technical inspection, awarding the runner-up spot to Chris Heller. Larry Landis finished a strong third, with Tim Hahn and Matt Adams rounding out the top five. Smith and Ray Broderick won their respective heat races.
Racing action returns to the SSP Outback Track on Friday night, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. featuring quarter midget, kart and Adult Speedcar racing action.
Racing action returns to the Big Track at SSP on Saturday night, April 24 with the Late Models, Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars, XSC Elite, Legends Cars and Road Warriors.
Saturday will also be the first “Hometown Heroes” night of the season featuring the towns of Carlisle, Newville, Elizabethtown and Bainbridge. All fans entering the speedway from the hometowns being honored will be admitted FREE to the grandstands by showing proper photo identification and filling out an information card at the ticket booth.

The Next Wednesday Night Test & Tune is on April 21
The next Wednesday Night Test & Tune session will be held on Wednesday, September 23 at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. It is open to any type of racecars capable of competing on the 4/10 mile oval. The cost is $12.00 per person for pit passes and a $20.00 fee for each racecar entering the pit area ($32.00 per car & driver combination). Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with open track time from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. by class. Each session will be 6 – 8 laps per session. The grandstands are open free to the public. Each class will receive 4 to 5 rounds of 6/8 laps each or more if time permits. The fuel pumps from Miller’s Racing Parts will not be open. Anyone needing fuel should contact Miller’s Racing Parts directly at 717-766-0181. The main concession stand will be open throughout the night.
Also on Wednesday night, there will an open practice session for quarter midgets and karts at the Outback Track from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. under the lights. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with open practice from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The cost will be $20.00 per driver with no charge for anyone else entering the grandstand and “cold pit” areas. All Outback Track participants should enter the pits from the Kise Mill Road entrance behind turn 2 of the “Big Track.”
