SPRING RUN, PA (September 26, 2016) – It was an exciting day of racing action as the 600cc and 270cc Micro Sprints took to the Path Valley Speedway in Spring Run, PA for the Leffler Energy Micro Sprint Nationals. Pipersville, PA’s Brian Carber collected the win and the $1,500 top prize in 600cc Micro Sprint action and Lititz, PA’s Mike Rutherford claimed the win, and the $1,000 top prize, in the 270cc Micro Sprint division.
Defending Path Valley Speedway 600cc Micro Sprint Champion, Garrett Bard led the field to the drop of the green flag, with Mike Rutherford alongside the outside of him. Bard set a quick pace early on and giving himself a half straightaway lead by just the second circuit. Kameron Morral quickly moved into the second position with Rutherford falling to third and Carber in fourth.
In heavy lapped traffic on the tenth circuit, Bard’s No. 95 machine appeared to briefly shut off allowing Kameron Morral to close the sizable lead and pull along the outside of Bard – but Bard battled back slipping through lapped traffic.
On lap 13, Bard’s machine slowed significantly, and Morral slipped by the leader with Mike Rutherford, Brian Carber, and Tyler Walton – moving up from the tenth place starting spot -- following.
The action slowed on lap 14 for the No. 5 of Jason Sechrist.
Morral continued his lead on the restart, with Brian Carber moving into the second position followed by Travis Scott and Rutherford.
Just one lap later it was Morral – who led the Fred Rahmer Promotions 600cc Points heading into the event -- with engine problems, as a huge puff of smoke billowed from the back of the No. 880 machine.
Carber inherited the top spot as the half-way crossed flags waved. Carber launched away, with Travis Scott challenging for the lead.
As the laps ticked away, Carber dominated the slower cars switching lanes with Scott closing in. The two were nose-to-tail as the white flag waved with Scott pulling inside Carber exiting turn two. Side-by-side with the checkered in sight Carber pulled away claiming the victory and the $1,500 grand prize.
Travis Scott would settle for second; Tyler Walton came home in third, claiming the 2016 Fred Rahmer Promotions 600cc Micro Sprint Championship, Brenden Bright finished in fourth, and Mike Rutherford rounded out the top five.
Mike Rutherford dominated the 30-lap 270cc Micro Sprint main event. Rutherford started in the top spot, after winning both of his heat races from mid-pack starting positions.
Rutherford charged away at the drop of the green flag with Toby Blumenshine along the outside.
The yellow flag flew on the sixth circuit for the No. 20 of Cory Myers.
Rutherford jumped back to the top spot on the restart as the laps ticked away, claiming the checkered and the $1,000 top prize.
Robbie Watson finished in the second position challenging forward from a 17th starting position; Ken Miller finished in third; Blumenshine in fourth; and Josh Stoyer in fifth.
53 600cc Micro Sprints and 41 270cc Micro Sprints signed in for competition, competing in two round of heat races with passing points determining starting positions for the feature event.
Perfect Attendance bonuses were selected at random with Garrett Bard winning the XXX Race Chassis, Bradley Weber winning the $500 Hyper Racing Gift Certificate, and Randy Kunkle Jr. winning a test session in an RBR 410 Sprint Car. 600cc Micro Sprint Champion Tyler Walton was also awarded a test session in an RBR 410 Sprint Car.
